A thanksgiving proposal

Deep Fried turkey?! Oh yeah baby!!! I'm willing to drive for that! :D

kittynh, you are right in that I can transport the ingredients although I would have to get the mumchump's place really early since there is quite a bit of preparation involved (like hours), although I could get most of that done the day before and just put it together while we are waiting for the turkey. I could also make a quick batch of sweet tamales to compliment the turkey. ;)

Buzz, I checked where Eastham is in relation to me and ... it's basically at the other end of the Cape...

Thank you mumchup for the wonderful suggestion!

So? The cape isn't exactly big. I mean come on. That's like saying "It's all the way on the other side of the room" or "It's more than three arm lengths away"

Buzzo, I live in Norwich, that's just a quick jaunt from you, come on up and check out what eastern CT has to offer besides radioactive goats! We also have casinos (I wonder if theres' a connection??)

For Everyone's Information (FEI?)
We got the bed in the spare room put together, it turns out that Steve was thinking of our *old* spare bed; this one doesn't require hardware to put together (sorry Beady & Mrs. Beady, that we didn't realize for Labor Day)
Steve doesn't know yet about these possible plans, but he loves to deep fry turkeys. Now I'm getting hungry (... deep fried turkey skin... drool...)

And I would be willing to help in any way required to make tamales happen. Up to, and including, getting ingredients that you don't want to transport.

Okay so let's reiterate what we have planned thus far:

We have a POSSIBLE location at mumchup's place, we still need to get back to her SO to see if he also agrees. Otherwise, we have a few potential places to host still.

Date is still in the air... it could be on Thanksgiving... but then again it can be on that Friday or Saturday too... we are still working on that date (still depends on where we decide).

It's still a work in progress... :boxedin:

I talked to Steve he says sure; and he will be our Meleagris gallopavo chef.

I am up for Thanksgiving day or the Friday or both. I could eat deep fried turkey and tamales every single day for the rest of my life (there would have to be chocolate & beer too tho')

Sounds like fun. The goat wasn't even really radioactive.

How many can be accomidated and how many may be in?

We've got a few places to sleep, spare bed, couches, floor (or you can bring an inflatable mattress). After you see how close we are, you may decide not to stay over, although your welcome to. Your down near the coast, to the east of New Haven right?

ALSO:: If the weather is only cold (and not freezing we can have a bonfire too!

Thank you Mumchup! :D I'll make sure to bring my Mexican chocolate stash to make hot chocolate just for you.

As far as dates... we have one request for Friday Nov. 23rd so far. Now that we have a location, we can work on the date. I like Mumchup's suggestions and I'm not against two days of stuffing myself full of deep fried turkey and tamales. :p

What dates would work best? Thanksgiving day, the Friday after, or just feast on both days to give folks flexibility depending on their drive schedule?

Cowgirl - the chocolate would be great! If more is needed, I can sometimes get Ibarra (is that right?) and always Goya (which I don't like as much)
Also, I bought a 1-lb bag of masa harina because I'm excited about making tamales. I put it in the freezer for now and if you don't use it I'll just save it for later. Because I will know how to make tamales.

ponderingturtle, I have a corollary to one of your sig lines:
Sufficiently advanced Modern Dance is indistinguishable from Parody

Ooo... if you can get more Ibarra chocolate we can make a big batch to greet quests with... or as a late night drink in the evening to stay warm if it's not too cold for the bonfire.

OH MY GOSH!!! You will have to show me later where you got the fresh masa!!! We are going to use it! I'm going to bring my stash of Maseca and other ingredients to make the sweet tamales, and if the 1lb bag of your masa isn't enough. Mumchup if you find them get at least 3 bags of corn husk leaves! I'm going to scope out my local grocery stores for corn husk leaves as well. Actually, I should tell you know, the day before, you will have to soak them in warm water overnight (at least) to get them soft enough to work with. We can always make corn husk dolls with the leftovers. :D

For everybody else, keep coming with your suggested dates!

I'll look for corn husks in the supermarket that has the most foreign food. They have started to carry lots of unusual things like cherimoya, taro, bacalao, plantain, loofah, etc. I must admit I'm baffled by that last one. Who eats loofah? And if they aren't eating it, what's it doing in the produce section?
If everyone decides they want to do Friday, you're more than welcome to come down Thursday anyway, we'll have a smaller Pre-Thanksgiving!

Also for anyone who doesn't live in an area with lots of immigrants, I propose a possible field trip: Shopping at the immigrant markets! We have a couple of Asian markets in town and also an Indio-Pak market. The spices at the Indian store are incredibly pungent and incredibly cheap! Once you've started putting garam masala in all your food you'll never go back! Plus:
- Frozen potato samosa
- curry flavor ramen
- wicked cheap lemongrass
- Asian & Indian rice
- Fresh banana flower
- A whole frozen durian
- Scary freeze-dried sea creatures
- Cracker Nuts!!!!!!!! (yum)
- Sweet Chili sauce in Giant bottles
- small cans of unusual fruit juices (lychee, mango, calamansi)
- Every conceivable kind of noodle & wrapper
- bitter gourd
- preposterously long green beans
(I'm a little passionate about this subject, Thank you immigrants!)

I have to work Friday because I'll be the most senior person in. But, if that's the consensus, have it then and don't worry about it. I do have family I can go see on Thursday.

Mattfn, you're also welcome on Thursday, even if the shindig is Friday.

I can't make Thursday due to family obligations (Thanksgiving with Gram, don't want to miss that, she might change her will, haha).

I don't even know what most of that stuff listed is but the food still sounds cool!

Please let me know if there is anything I can bring.

Please let me know if there is anything I can bring.

- Yourself; and anything that would go well with tamales & fried turkey.

(flash of inspiration!!! I must make a mole sauce! There will now be mole to go with fried turkey!!!)

Okay based on the last few posts I'll reiterate mumchups suggestion and make a compromise.

For those that can make it Thursday we will have "la gran tamalada" party dinner and you will get a chance to see the preparation that goes into making tamales... and maybe we'll have some deep fried turkey.

We can make Friday the "Main Turkey Exposition" since the consensus seems most people will be able to make it on Friday but then as far as the tamales go, you will probably miss a big part of the preparation that goes into them.

Personally, I'm going to be there on both days because a) I don't have any family on a "rent" basis to smooch for their Thanksgiving dinner and b) driving back to the Cape from CT is not a good idea on a VERY full stomach. Mumchup, I'm willing to help pay for a second or third turkey of necessary.

If you haven't expressed which day you would like to come thus far, let us know now so that we can prepare!

{salvates at the thought of visiting the grocery stores alone}
