Split Thread A second impeachment

Trump's defence blabbing on about either BLM/Antifa or 'the election was stolen' is not going to cut any mustard with anybody. They will probably go on about 'democracy' and the right of voters to vote for a raging psychopath, if they so wish.

"Let the people decide for we have no backbone ourselves", will be the Republican line, apart from those who Trump labels 'RINO's.

Doesn't absolve anyone of their oaths, though. If you believe it's impeachable to incite insurrection, and the facts show that's what happened, then you have a moral duty to apply the appropriate remedy.

Oh, I agree that the GOP Senators are a total disgrace and will be condemned by history.
Thing is the poster I was responding to thought this was the same as a criminal trial in a court of law, and it is not. For one thing, a criminal trial has definent ruels it has to follow, and an impeachment trial can make up any rules they want.

Trump's defesne will be a lot of whattabutsim, with lots of footage of the BLM protests edited in such a way as to blatently appeal to the "All blacks are violent thugs" mentality.

Here's the key: let's say Toupee Fiasco is convicted and banned from office (as he will be, if the GOP is serious about being a party of rule of law - so he will not).

The same people who will be emboldened by his "victory" would, instead, be outraged by his "persecution", and resort to violence against soft targets, and possibly the Capitol again.

This is why folks like me have been pointing out for the past few decades that police should respond to *actual* murderous groups, such as white supremacists and other far-right militants. Showing up to kettle and shoot unarmed black protestors, high schoolers going home, and the like are a colossal waste of both time, resources, and potential good will, compared to the above - which, luckily, Biden seems to be taking seriously while immediate predecessors (including both presidents GWB and Obama) all to often dropped the ball - and which Toupee Fiasco obviously and publicly wallowed in for roughly the past decade as a political tool (as opposed to merely law enforcement, as he did with the now-exonerated "Central Park 5").

FWIW - no, no, I did not think it was the same as a criminal trial in a court of law. I was pointing out how the senate is not at all like the jury in a criminal trial.

I wonder how long Lindsey can hold his breath before having to come out of Trump's ass before crawling back in?
He breathes methane; it is his natural state. Better to ask how he functions without having his nose up someone's bum.

It won't but I wonder if we won't see some absentions.
Wouldn't that be great? "I can't in good conscience vote on the outcome of a flagrantly unconstitutional show trial" would do it. "President Trump is right; therefor I ABSTAIN from lending credibility to this kangaroo court."

I am concerned that Trump's acquittal will be taken as a victory not only by Trump but by his followersl and more violence will result because they have been emboldened.

Look if the Dems hadn't moved forward no doubt people would be saying that would encourage them because clearly they did nothing wrong.

If Trump were by some miracle convicted that would encourage them because it was clearly a deep state fix.

The Dems have done what they had to do if they didn't want to just tacitly condone Trumps actions, what Trump's deplorables do next is the responsibility of the Republicans who continue to support Trump.

Or even a sociopath!

I love the WAPO but the angst on some their forums is getting to be pretty bad.
Lots of 'If Trump is acquitted it is the end of Amerrican Democracy, we are deomed, and there is nothing we can do about it:.
I can understand being upset, but a lot of these posts seem to me more like Teen Age Angst on steroids; .
I expect total despair from a teenager going through their angst stage, but expect people to grow up a little.

Move that all those abstaining leave the Senate chamber before the vote is taken.

So Chao and DeVos resigned from Trump's cabinet after the riot.

Per Dallas Morning News, Chao said she “cannot set aside” the insurrection Wednesday at the Capitol.

But what does that have to do with Trump? Obviously a few bad actors simply didn't understand that he was calling for a peaceful transition of power. /s

Why did she resign from Trump's cabinet, as if he had somehow done something wrong?

Look. Sociopath is a euphemism created because the layman in the street had an erroneous belief that a psychopath meant a serial killer, who looked a bit like a bug-eyed Jack Nicholson. In the same way laymen saw the word 'moron', 'cretin', 'idiot' and 'spastic' as hugely negative, so new words had to be invented. A sociopath is not a nice version of a psychopath. They are one and the same, nature versus nurture notwithstanding.

Clear now?

I think some people have a vague superstition that if they accept the worst ahead of time, the worst won't happen. Or they predict complete disaster so that they can take solace in any small sign of hope, such as a few Republicans breaking the Dems' way so "at least the majority voted to convict."

They take a pessimistic view as a sort of insurance - "You can't disappoint me, I started out with no hope!"

Is it any worse than the constant prediction of a new civil war?

Doesn't make them any less of being weenies.
