Split Thread A second impeachment

There is the recorded call to Raffensperger.

Sure. But he could testify as to how and why he perceived the President’s words as threats.

“Mr. Raffensperger, after listening again to the recording, can you please tell the Senate if you felt threatened?.

“Yes. I very much felt threatened.”

“What specifically made you feel that way?”

“May I read from the record?”

“Yes you may”.

“This is the President speaking: “That’s a criminal offense. And you can’t let that happen. That’s a big risk to you and to Ryan, your lawyer.””

“Was there something specific about that statement that you found threatening?”

“Well, this was the head of the Executive Branch, who has jurisdiction over the Justice Department, saying if I didn’t find votes for the President, the risk was prosecution by his Justice Department. Of course I felt threatened.”

And so on. I want drama!

“Trump may not know a lot about the Framers, but they knew about him.” Genius line from Senator Raskin.

Well, Marjorie Taylor Greene has stumped us all with her usual sagacity (Business Insider via MSN):
"If the #Jan6 organizers were Trump supporters, then why did they attack us while we were objecting to electoral college votes for Joe Biden?" she tweeted. "The attack RUINED our objection that we spent weeks preparing for, which devastated our efforts on behalf of Trump and his voters."

Of course, now she needs to explain why the ex-President she's supporting with this stunning display of "gotcha!" logic told those people to march down there-
At a "Save America" rally in Washington, DC shortly before the siege, Trump told thousands of his supporters to "walk down to the Capitol" and "cheer on our brave senators, and congressmen and women," adding, "We're probably not going to be cheering so much for some of them because you'll never take back our country with weakness. You have to show strength, and you have to be strong."

There ya go, Marjorie- they weren't people who came there to disrupt your objections, they were people who were sent there to support them. This ain't rocket surgery, lady. Trump is being tried for his actions and words over a period of two months, culminating on that day- trying to take the focus off him by pretending that it must have been somebody beside his supporters responding to those words and actions is just a weak-tea distraction.

I think you want C SPAN 2.

To watch online, I'm supposed to sign in with my cable carrier. I suppose I could but I'm watching the free streaming on CNN instead.

I am not in the USA so it is not always easy to find a decent live stream. There is no charge for watch C Span. This takes you straight in.

"It says nothing about former office" - An attorney Representative demolishing Trump's claim that Article 2 says nothing about 'former' officers.

OMG, Trump's lawyers cited an expert's document and when read to the end, it doesn't say what they thought it said. :p

"They could have killed all of us"....yet Trump tweeted, "Remember this day forever".

Representative pointing out this was a POTUS saying this.

Here's a CNN headline:

Seriously? "Rock Washington"? "Echo through the ages"?

[Church Lady Voice]We really like ourselves don't we?[/Church Lady Voice]

This is the third impeachment trial most of us have lived through, and none of them have rocked Washington or echoed through the ages.

For the record I think that he should be convicted, but he won't be, barring some truly unexpected development. If all goes as expected, this trial will have very close to zero impact on anything. I doubt it will even impact CNN's ratings much.

It's a pity. He should have been thrown out of office on about January 9, but he wasn't. He should be convicted now, even if it's only symbolic, but it doesn't seem he will be. Because he has already left office, I just don't think the vast majority of the country will care enough to pay attention, much less to "echo through the ages".

I disagree completely. I think this impeachment trial, regardless of the outcome, will go down in US history and be dissected and debated by every future law student.

That possibility has already been discussed.

Its not a totally impossible concept. But if it does happen, it won't be because they "caught the republicans napping". (Impeachment is such a significant event that pretty much every congress-critter will be paying attention to every moment.) It will be because some Republicans want Trump gone, but don't want to upset the MAGAchuds by voting against him. So they take the middle ground... sit out the vote (maybe claiming "impeachment is unconstitutional so I will protest by not voting"), and leave it to the Democrats and a few Republicans to actually convict Trump.

That's technically possible but extremely unlikely because it would mean that those Repub senators would have to go back to their constituents -- heavily Trumpy -- and explain why they allowed Dear Leader to be convicted when they could prevented it. No prize there. They might as well vote to convict and at least get some points for integrity.

"This was a national tragedy"..."not let bygones be bygones". Rep Joe Cicilline

Do you have more information on how to find this part?

I'll have to go back to that part of the presentation.

On another note, Raskin mentioned they'd buried his son the day before. His son killed himself at the age of 25. He had a daughter and son-in-law with him on the 6th. It's quite the personal story. He's tearing up telling it.

Seeing that video compilation was horrifying. I'd seen many parts of it before, but putting it all together and with new angles just brought to light how crazy it was. Even though it was ostensibly in chronological order, I do wish they'd had time-stamps on each one. I'm sure some idiotic naysayers will be saying "Oh, it was just edited to make it look worse than it was."
