Split Thread A second impeachment

As Tom Freedman said on GPS two Sundays ago, the Republican party is in a fight with itself like, "two scorpions in a bottle". The point of the impeachment by the Democrats is to put the bottle over a Bunsen burner. The Dems know they won't get a conviction but the fight will cripple the Republican party.

Now, the USAs, states' attorneys and Dominion's legal team need to get on the ball and go for some blood on Trump. The Dems forcing the Republicans to be the party of Trump only works as a strategy if he's indicted, convicted and sued into oblivion. Trump can rise from the ashes if he's not convicted in the Senate and isn't in serious legal jeopardy around the time of the mid-term elections.

"Natinal Review" a COnservative website, says the Dems have laid a trap for the GOP with the impeachment, and the GOP has walked right into it.

I suspect they're right, and kind of hope they are. I'm reminded of a "monkey trap." In this, supposedly, you put a tasty fruit the monkey loves behind a hole too small for the monkey to pull it out. Although the monkey is trapped and can never eat the fruit, he cannot bear to let it go.

Scientists warn the U.S. is in a “race against time” with new coronavirus variants

But first the Democrats who run the Senate would like to spend several days seeking vengeance in a farcical impeachment trial of a President who is no longer in office

So NOW he's all concerned about the pandemic?

Seen in several versions on twitter.

Why would Trump be worried about impeachment?

If you were on trial for bank robbery you wouldn't be worried if half of the jury were part of the robbery gang.

The lawyers will figure a way out. They aren't going to argue about Trump; they will argue about the constitutionality of the impeachment. They will argue so that senators can vote against conviction, not because of what Trump did but against the process.

Interesting article on the lawyers on his defense team.

The news moves fast.

This from CNN a short time ago:

With a little more than a week before his impeachment trial is set to begin, President Trump's legal team is in tumult.
Butch Bowers and Deborah Barbier, who were expected to be two of the lead attorneys, are no longer on the team. A source familiar with the changes said it was a mutual decision for both to leave the legal team.

I mentioned that a few days ago. Half the GOP "jury" is complicit in his crime. Why would they vote to convict him?

I going to laugh at this ignorance:
"He's the kind of person that if he was in the president's ear for the past couple of years, we probably wouldn't have ended up in this place," Pearson says.
As if Trump would ever listen to any lawyer or anyone else besides Trump.

And then this made me laugh even more:

Maybe Trump missed the retainer payment.

Its even worse than reported.

A little more from CNN
Josh Howard, a North Carolina attorney who was recently added to the team, has also left.... Johnny Gasser and Greg Harris, also from South Carolina, are no longer involved with the case, either.
A person familiar with the departures told CNN that Trump wanted the attorneys to argue there was mass election fraud...rather than focus on the legality of convicting a president after he's left office. Trump was not receptive to the discussions....

So 5 lawyers have quit.

It will be interesting to see if Trump actually manages to find lawyers willing to follow his insanity, or whether someone will eventually manage to talk some sense into him.

Of course, lets face it... Trump could hire Lionel Hutz as his impeachment defense lawyer, and the majority of republicans in the senate would still fail to convict, regardless of what happens in the trial.

Or maybe Trump insisted that they double down and prove that the election was rigged. Drag in Rudy waiving some vague affidavits from people who don't have a clue about what was going on. Claim that Q really is a super secret top intelligence officer with proof that Biden is a Chinese Communist Party plant and part of a massive pedophile child-blood-drinking globalist plot to control the minds of anyone not wearing tin foil. That sort of thing.

I guess I was right. Is he going to have to make up with Rudy? Maybe resort to Lin Wood? Defend himself?

...
I was listening to much of the same thing, and when the statement "He's the kind of person that if he was in the president's ear for the past couple of years, we probably wouldn't have ended up in this place," occurred, I also laughed at the sheer idiocy of the remark, as if T**** did not have a record of firing people who told him anything he did not want to hear.

That fits with this:

I wonder if some of their fellow lawyers informed them about Trump's habit of not paying his lawyers.
Though of course ther might be other reasons.
I have to agree that they wanted to the take the course most lawyers would take...and that is argue that Trump's speech was not an incitement to riot. You can make a argument over the semantic points there. But they would not want to atgue that the election was stolen.
I have a sick feeling Trump mighh argue the insurrection was somehow justified.

That might not just a joke;Trump has a history of screweing over his lawyers when it comes time to pay them. Good lawyers like to get paid.

According to the CNN article I referred to earlier:

The attorneys had not yet been paid any advance fees and a letter of intent was never signed.
Though of course ther might be other reasons.

According to the article, the main reason is that the lawyers wanted to argue constitutional issues, and Trump wanted to argue election fraud.
I have a sick feeling Trump mighh argue the insurrection was somehow justified.
I am kind of torn on this.

On one hand, the U.S. doesn't need even more "stolen election" rhetoric, but I doubt it will be convincing to anyone who isn't already a MAGAchud. And it would be amusing to see the senators try to justify absolving Trump of his role in the terrorist activities when Trump himself is putting on such an idiotic defense.

I hope the dems bring in the QAnon man in his horns and costume to testify. I read that he wants to do so.

As much as that might be fun, I'm not really sure if that would be a good idea. After all, someone that... unstable might testify in ways that are counter productive. (His lawyer says he wants to testify to show he was 'influenced' by Trump, but he could change his story when on the stand.)

I'm laughing that they quit. I'm not laughing that it might have been because Trump wasn't serious about hiring them. From what we've seen of Trump for the last 4 years, he is incapable of working with a serious lawyer because Trump has to dominate any relationship including one between Trump and any lawyer that 'works for him'.

Besides, Trump is almost certainly counting on his political influence to defeat the impeachment efort. Why should he need a lawyer? All Trump needs is loyal Senators.

I'm surprised Trump isn't defending himself. After all, I'm sure he knows more about the law than any lawyer. He's had lawyers say to him, "Sir, how do you know so much about the law?" Perhaps it's because he's been involved in so many lawsuits like the world has never seen before and he's never lost (because he always settles before he can lose or just wears the suing party down by running out the clock or outspending them).
