A Scientist develops a new theory about the impact that killed the dinosaurs.

It is reasonable that something happened in India at the time of the impact that wiped out the dinosaurs. If you were well away from this impact where would the most dangerous place be on the Earth? Answer is on the opposite side of the Earth. The reason is that all the shock waves (both air and ground) travel half way round the world and meet again there. Whatever they found in India could be this spot.

It’s not so much a new hypothesis as a new candidate for the impact point. If this feature really is an asteroid impact it’s a lot larger then the one in the Yucatan and is also about the right age. From the sounds of it though, it still requires some work to prove its actually an impact crater.

And though Chatterjee's abstract was approved by conference organizers for the Geological Society of America meeting, this research has not been peer-reviewed in a scientific journal.
The Impact Idea
The prevailing theory behind the mass extinctions remains the Chicxulub impact idea.
"I would say 95 percent or more of the earth scientists who study the KT boundary are in agreement that Chicxulub is the event that brought on the KT mass extinctions," said geophysicist Sean Gulick of the University of Texas at Austin.
As for the Shiva hypothesis, Gulick was very doubtful.
"There's a bunch of problems to say the least," Gulick said of Chatterjee's hypothesis. "There is no evidence that he's presenting of it actually being a crater."
I would say that he still has a long way to go to prove that his hypothesis is a plausible alternative to the current understanding.

I don't know much about this Shiva crater but I suspect it is someone confusing the remains of the Deccan Basalt Eruption with that of an impact crater. Interestingly the Deccan eruption was going on when the Chicxulub event happened and I've always thought it was probably the combination of the two events that caused the mass extinction event.
