A Nuke A Nuke, My Kingdom for A Nuke

Nuclear Energy isn't "Nukes". Just like Baby-Oil doesn't mean that it's made out of Babies.

Not to side with Oliver, but Jordan is probably one of Israels most liberal neighbors.

If they could be convinced to run a thorium fuel cycle, everything would be hunky-dory.

Yes, only "friends" should be allowed to have nuclear energy [not even mentioning nukes here]. Since we have earthday and world aids day, shouldn't we have a world hypocrisy day as well in this context?

Had to look that up. Thanks for putting the "e" in JREF.

It doesn't appear that Russia is really into it.
The Russians have plenty of Uranium, and prefer that 'quick and dirty' process involving U-235.

Let me say, if Iran would go the route of thorium fuel, I believe they would find the world breathing a whole lot easier. However, both high costs and lack of Russian support for Molten Salt Reactor technology keeps them from going that way.

By the way, in the USA, nuclear power plants are referred to as "nukes" -- it's slang.

You're confused because there's no hypocrisy here.

Of course in an ideal world, those we trust would be allowed to have whatever they want, and those we don't trust would be allowed nothing at all.

Of course in an ideal world, we'd all agree on who was trustworthy and who wasn't. And of course in an ideal world, everybody would be trustworthy.

But here we're not even talking about who's "allowed" to have nuclear energy. The actual argument is that there's not much cause for concern when friendly neighbors acquire powerful and dangerous technology.

But we very wisely and appropriately feel quite different when unfriendly neighbors acquire powerful and dangerous technology.

Hypocrisy doesn't even enter into it. Is it hypocritical to only invite your friends to your birthday party? No. Is it hypocritical to insist on voting only for those politicians you approve of? No. Is it hypocritical to be less concerned about Sweden's human rights record than you are about China's? No. Is it hypocritical to be less concerned about Jordan's attitude towards Israel than you are about Iran's? No.

I hope this clears up your confusion.

The Kingdom of Jordan is reportedly going to move ahead with Russian-supplied nuclear technology.

Conspicuously absent is even a peep of complaint by neighboring Israel.

Not enough details but it looks like the fuel will be comeing from russia and unless jordan builds a reprocessing plant that would make it tricky for it to use the program to build weapons.

Israel should get rid of it's nukes.

And I agree with parky. Arab counties have just as much right to nuclear power and nuclear weapons as Israel has.

Everyone should have nuclear power. But everyone should get rid of nuclear weapons

A cogent case is made that Israel's presumed possession of nuclear weapons is a major factor in the relative stability among Israel and its neighbors. Israel without ultimate weaponry would invite more heightened aggression and make Israel vulnerable to continued war.

I have to agree with you on this one Parky.

Nuclear "energy" controlled by religious fanatics with an agenda of genocide of "non-believers" and a global Islamic caliphate seems like sound policy to me.

CANDU ACR-1000 reactors (light water cooled, heavy water moderated) are capable of burning thorium "out of the box". So are most other existing reactors with little or no modification. You just need to start the reactor with standard U-235 until you've got sufficient neutron flux to make the Th-232 --> U-233 breeding self-sustaining. Then you can start swapping in thorium until that's all that's in the reactor core (CANDU ACR-1000s are refuelable on the fly).

Yes especially one educated at Sandhurst Military College and Oxford, who was raised by a man who attended Harrow and Sandhurst who himself was raised by a man who attended Sandhurst.......seeing a connection yet

And just so we dont miss anything. The current heir to the Jordanian throne is attending Kings College

I don't think he's referring to Jordan here, but rather the previous quote.

Did they learn the finer points of torture, which the Jordanians perfected, at Sandhurst and Oxford? You can take the man out of Jordan, but, you can't take Jordan out of the man.
