Workers are IN the community....which is what I stated.

Accordingly, suggesting that 'the opinion of those living close to nuclear facilities should carry some weight for you' is illogical

Going by what you hvae posted, we can only speculate WHY the neighbours are YIMBYs... and my guess is it'll have less to do with science/engineering/ecology/etc and more to do with having a robust local economy - an issue alluded to (in passing) by the researchers cited in your post: "the poll — conducted by Bisconti Research Inc. — found that 90 percent of nuclear plant neighbors believe a new reactor would provide an economic stimulus for their communities"

At issue is coal's content of uranium and thorium, both radioactive elements. They occur in such trace amounts in natural, or "whole," coal that they aren't a problem. But when coal is burned into fly ash, uranium and thorium are concentrated at up to 10 times their original levels.
