The nicest way to avoid hotlinking is to restrict images to the host site via your web server (htaccess on Apache or through IIS). All other sites can be sent a small pic that says "no hotlinking" or nothing at all.

The less nice way is to pass the hotlink off to a mega site. I've seen admins redirect particularly annoying hotlinks off to a giant map on the census web page or NOAA or a raw Hubble pic from NASA. The problem is that this usually punishes the forum host more than the user.

Or you can send cruel shock pics.

Yeah, thanks for reminding me of that. I haven't seen it but a friend described it to me and that was all I needed to know. It was an interesting article to read though. I avoid myspace like the plague; I looked at it once for about 15 minutes and that all I needed. It seemed like everyone was the same with an occasional diamond in the rough.

If I ever look for hard to find torrents though I still get bothered when an XXX site link catches me off guard and flashes a picture of a girl's fully open rectum. That just isn't my cup of tee. I can usually tell what the site links to though.
