So one of the co-founders of Wikipedia, Larry Sanger, has split to create a new online Encyclopedia project. While this one will also allow public contribution, it will not instant-publish them; and the whole thing is overseen by a panel of experts and adacemics. The panel looks pretty solid so far, and further negotiations with other academic and scientific groups are in the works.
Not sure about the interface, but overall it looks pretty promising. And, like Wikipedia, will have free access; but will also have a subscription option with exanded content.
