So one of the co-founders of Wikipedia, Larry Sanger, has split to create a new online Encyclopedia project. While this one will also allow public contribution, it will not instant-publish them; and the whole thing is overseen by a panel of experts and adacemics. The panel looks pretty solid so far, and further negotiations with other academic and scientific groups are in the works.

Not sure about the interface, but overall it looks pretty promising. And, like Wikipedia, will have free access; but will also have a subscription option with exanded content.

Hmm... I've had my own issues with Wikipedia in the past but have come around to supporting the project. (Speaking of which, I need to get to work on the JREFWiki's Martial Arts entries).

I don't know if this'll gain any ground as Wikipedia's already well dug-in and accepted. It'd be like starting up a new operating system and going head-to-head with Windows.

They've got some serious funding to back it up. It sounds like a free version of what encarta is already doing though. Free like wikipedia may be missleading since the earth portal appears to be "Copyright © 2004-2005 National Council for Science and the Environment. All rights reserved." We shall see.

It's not really going head to head though. For a start it doesn't appear to be planning to try and be an encyolpedia.

Secondly it has some very serious funding. Probably greater than wikipedia's total spending to date.

Yeah but it's no more an issue then each piece of software you use having a "different" UI. MS still allow the Office and Encarta team to create new interfaces every damn release! (Or in the case of Encarta - continue to "refine" a crap interface at least the Office team keep trying new things!)

Wikipedia has hundreds of thousands of articles. It would take YEARS for a board of people to review that many contributions.
