Why oh why do they say to the archers

"FIRE"?

Jesus Christ anachronistically reborn.

It happens in thousands of pictures. Why? What are they thinking of?

That and guns that have no recoil piss me off.

well, one of the definitions from dictionary.com of "fire" is discharged bullets or other projectiles. So I guess it fits.

Though I'm sure the proper term would be "release" or something like that.

but hey, if you can suspend disbelief to buy the idea that elves are shooting arrows at orcs you shouldn't really sweat the use of the word "fire":D
 
At least two other Best Picture winners featured arrow volleys: "Gladiator" and "Braveheart." I believe at least one of them used the command, "Loose!"

Arrow volleys also appear in Olivier's and Branaugh's versions of "Henry V."

that's the word i was looking for,not "release", but "loose". (was Braveheart btw)

of course we all know how historically accurate Mel Gibson is.

Few people are literate any more. Most would think it meant "lose."

Funny, the inherent absurdity of the presented situation never occured to me:D I guess Mr. Jackson really did deserve that Oscar.
