The plane crash story, like the story I recently posted about a sole house fire survivor who consulted Sylvia, would be chalked up to "useless".

With both women, she didn't tell the surviving family member a single thing they didn't know or couldn't have very reasonably guessed.

To give a psychic credit for stating the unknowable-and-unverifiable-either-way-but-probable-enough, the reasonable-to-assume or the obvious- that's not a "hit".

In this next story, a mysterious plane crash leaves a grieving mom with some unanswered questions. I want you to take a look at this.

PAT: C.J. was a very outgoing little boy. Whenever we went to church and stuff and--he would get up there and play the drums and get up there and play the piano and--anything that made noise. Chris was a very hard-working man, very ambitious. He cared a lot for his family. Chris and C.J. was very close, and they loved each other very much.
Thanksgiving day, Chris wanted to take C.J. to Florida to visit with his family. Chris was a pilot, and he had his own plane, and he wanted to fly C.J. down to visit the family. They had had radio contact and everything seemed to be going fine. Then when the gentleman from the tower told him to keep on his flight plan, there was no response, and they dropped down from 9,000 feet to 3,000 feet in less than a minute. After many searches, they still haven't been able to find Chris or C.J.
There has been rumors that Chris was in a bad financial situation and that he took C.J. and they parachuted out of the plane to avoid restitution. In my heart, I believe Chris and C.J. are gone, but the rumors has put some doubt in my mind. I want to ask Sylvia if Chris and C.J. are dead or alive.

PAT: Well, no, sir. Him and I was not married at the time.

PAT: But there was not at--what they found was debris the next day, the landing gear and the wings of the plane and stuff. We never did find the fu--the fuselage or any remains of the bodies.

Ms. BROWNE: You know, with--even with young JFK, you know, when you fall in water, it's--you know, it's r--really almost impossible.
PAT: Our next thing is that we are planning on going out for another dive. I will gor--get another team out to go out and search for them. Is there a particular place or area that you--comes to mind that maybe we can start?
Ms. BROWNE: Oh, honey, it's so far out now. Here with go with the undertow again like we had on another show. We're talking about an undertow here, and it's so far I'd--I don't even know where to start to tell you. I mean, we could get a compass and--it would be just so far out.
PAT: Will we get any closure?
Ms. BROWNE: I think if you let it close. I--I--you know, I had hate that word, closure. I think when we lose somebody, I don't think it ever closes. Does it close? Do you think it ever closes? I don't think it closes. I think it closes when we go over there and we see them again. But to find their bodies, I don't see you ever finding them, honey.
PAT: So you don't feel we'll ever find the fuselage or anything?
Ms. BROWNE: No.

She's still in buisness. She is still selling books, running a church, doing readings and doing tours and cruises. Someone is buying it.

It's not enough to thoroughly debunk someone. Harry Houdini so thoroughly disproved the psychics and mediums of his time- and they are still around, just in different forms and using different tricks.

It's the same with Sylvia. She's been doing this for more than fifty years and she could go on doing this stuff for a hundred years, if she could live that long. All you need is to find a different audience. And there's a constantly rotating pool of people for it.

One of Robert's articles on the site is from a woman who was friends with her in the early 1970s and fell victim to one of her scams. She actually very quickly got wise to it and on her own, with no help from a Robert or a James Randi. Sylvia then moved onto hundreds of others. That's how it works.

Astonishing. Don't know about you, QG, but even I was surprised by the results of this project. When we started out, I was certain there would be several murders or abductions SB would be correct in. Perhaps through hot reading, perhaps through smart guessing, maybe through sheer blind luck. I thought I'd be debunking something substantial. Some impressive sounding results that could nevertheless be disproven and explained in other ways. Knocking down the house of cards.

Psychic detectives, as it turns out, aren't even a house of cards. They aren't even a house of toothpicks. They are a house of...smoke. As Benjamin Radford once said, what is astonishing about psychics who claim to solve crimes isn't what results they get but how they always manage to get credit for less than nothing.

I really expected to find at least a couple of cases where Browne was vaguely correct, but that didn't happen. With all her guesses, cases, and statements I thought one (or more) would all line up as a correct assumption/prediction. I was and am willing to post those cases, but it's even close. I guess with hindsight, I'm not surprised.

True, true, However my mother is a fervent believer in Sylvia Browne.
I am going to try to get her to read this thread, maybe she'll consider the evidence against Browne posted here. At the very least it might stop her from trying to convert me to the church of Sylvia. One can hope.
