Didn't know if I should post this here or under general skepticism and the paranormal but had to choose one. Below is a list of 911 'number coincidences' some guy posted at another forum. I assume the problem with this, and other numerological claims, is that the total numer of possible 911 'number facts' you could list is quite massive and that out of that massive number it will be possible to cherry pick a few zingers. But I would be intersted to hear from anyone here who could debunk this list a little better than I can. I'd also be interested in any good links to numerology debunking in general. Thanks.

• The attacks took place on 9/11

• 9+1+1 = 11

• Each WTC Tower had 110 floors, which is a multiple of 11

• The aircraft which ultimately hit the Pentagon was American Airlines Flight 77. 77 is another multiple of 11

• American Airlines Flight 11, the first plane flown into World Trade Tower2, had 11 crewmembers. A total of 65 people were on Flight 11. 6+5 = 11

• The second plane, United Airlines Flight 175, hit the World Trade Tower 1 at 9:02 AM. 9+2 = 11

• 9/11 is the 254th day of the year. 2+5+4 = 11

• After 9/11, there are 111 days left in the year

• New York City (where the major attack occurred) consists of 11 letters

• New York was the 11th state admitted into the Union

• President Bush ordered flags to fly at half mast until 9/22, making an 11 day period of mourning

number permeate every aspect of everything, and theres only 10 of them, so there are always going to be coincidences, so as you say its simply a matter of cherry picking what to focus on, and then cherry picking what do with those numbers

for example he sees significance in 110 being a multiple of 11, but also sees significance in 111, which isnt a mutiple of 11, but kinda looks like 11

he takes the flight number for 77, but the impact time for flight 175

he takes the name new york city, but not washington dc or shanksville

Imagine the conspiracy theories if we words on a binary number system which is much more efficient than a base 10 digit system. No more old school only 1 in 10 chance of a digit appearing in two values.

I see a problem with this.
Since month's digit numbers are never read individually,Sept can't de read 1-1 but 11.
So it has to be added as 9+11=20
 
The funniest thing i've ever found in response to this is:

What do most twoofers fall on a an IQ scale? Between 9 and 11.
 
The general case is our brains are pattern-seeking machines. Vision is largely interpreted by matching what we see with patterns (things that we remember seeing in the past.) A huge amount of speech processing is also pattern based: that's what grammar is, after all.

There's a term for our tendency to see patterns where none actually exist: PareidoliaWP. A lot of Jesus and Virgin Mary sightings fall into this category.

Also, our tendency to seek and discover patterns is what's behind optical illusions.

The numerologists are applying our tendency to see patterns to numbers. A lot of their conclusions fall under the logical fallacy of affirming the consequent (they come to the conclusion first, then decide their path to get there had to be the cause.)

Apart from the day/month mix-up you have here, that would still be utter nonsense. You can view a date as written in a mixed number system, with the year in positional notation with base 10, the month as non-positional counter from 1 to 12 and likewise the day as counter with range [1,31], [1,30] or [1,28] depending on the value of the month, and range [1,29] for certain combinations of year and month value. Phew! What I actually wanted to say is this: adding the digits of the day counter is just as valid as summing up the digits of the month and day counters is. You're still adding digits of different base. That is to say, it isn't valid at all, no matter what.

Complete and utter BS either way. Except that it makes for a fun method to learn numbers by heart.

What exactly does the accused party stand to benefit from choosing a date where the individual digits in day and month sum up to the number of the day?

This is just conspiratorial paranoia: There are no actual coincidences, only nefarious deeds meticulously planned and carried out to produce these supposed coincidences.

And for Hitchhikers (Guide to the Galaxy) fans, "what do you get when you multiply 6 times 9" does, in fact, equal 42. Assuming you use base 13.... ;)
