I received an email from my friend Professor Paul Zarembka who I met and spent time with when I was engaged with the truth movement. I consider him to be an intelligent and honorable person.

Zarembka may well be a smart and honorable person, but after reading some of the articles on his blog, I have to say his critical thinking skills as well as his judgement of what is and what is not credible evidence are, being charitable, suspect.

His piece claiming the Boston marathon bombing was a staged event was particularly troubling in that regard.

Sadly, the man is apparently full of the Woo up to his ears.

Me too. I find it fascinating that well educated individuals can lack logic and reason when it comes to assessing phenomena outside their dedicated field, or within it for that matter.

I'm more interested in this than which part failed first or whatever. That is not to discredit the technical argument at all, as that is still very interesting material.

Exactly... PZ is a perfect case of this. I don't follow his publications re alt things nor many of the material coming out by truthers. I tried to calmly present some arguments and get him to consider something different and reject the nonsense. He listens.... doesn't refute, but doesn't change. So I stopped trying to wake him up.

I think for some, the atmosphere may be too charged and hostile... or the debunker side too condescending and dismissive and net welcoming enough for truthers to visit the other side. Beachy is an example of someone who is on the right side of this but has no patience and is hostile to anyone who doesn't completely agree with him.

The truth guys are also very hostile and accuse people of being agents, shills and so forth and so refuse to consider their arguments. There is no real communication with few exceptions such as Tony. But he is like a dog with a bone and won't let go of his incorrect ideas which he buildings his beliefs upon. GIGO can be dangerous because it does involve logic... just false starting logical arguments.

The truth side seems to be more motivated by ego and in some cases money and think of themselves as advocates for a noble cause...the truth- anti corruption, transparency and so on... And there is a movement, a set of stars in their universe, events and so forth... Truthers identify with a mission unlike the few people who bother to debunk them.
