It is just there are "Stalin Deniers" out there who try to deny that Stalin's crimes happened, and that is is all captalistic propaganda, etc. Their tactics pretty much are a Bizarro version of the Holocaust denier's methods.

How wide-spread is this phenomenon? My (vague) impression is that this is confined to Russia and maybe a couple of other USSR successor states, while Holocaust deniers somehow seem to crop up all over the world.

I have only rarely run across this in the west (stalinist denial). Mainly it seem to be used by the far far left to reinvigorate the failed Communist concept. The most bizarre claim that I've seen associated with this was that Lenin. Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot etc were actually right wingers out to discredit the Left.......

I suspect that Stalin denial will become more profound in another generation as the spectacular failure of Commnunism recedes further back into history.

I have no idea, I just see it popping up,though not as nearly as much as Holocaust Denial. I have no doubt a lot of it orginates in Russia, where there is still a cult of Stalin.
You aslo have a variation on this in which the Soviet Union was just peachy keen and paradise on earth Until Stalin showed up,ignoring the fact that the Soviet Union was a ruthless dictatorship from day one. All Stalin did was put it into overdrive.
