I think you need to define what "race" is in the way you use it, since it does not seem to conform with any normal definition of that word.

Was Sammy Davis Jr. the same race as Nicolas Sarkozy? How about Yaphet Kotto? Esti Mamo? You'll want to be careful with your answer.

Because there is nothing offered in support of the claim. It is a single statement in a private letter that has many interpretations.

I'm not saying that Jews are a distinct race. Anybody can convert to Judaism but nobody is capable of converting from a Caucasian into Asian. But it's not accurate to say that the idea of Jews as a race was born of and died with Nazism.

I'm not saying that Jews are a distinct race. Anybody can convert to Judaism but nobody is capable of converting from a Caucasian into Asian. But it's not accurate to say that the idea of Jews as a race was born of and died with Nazism.

Certainly Ashkenazim are a distinct ethnicity, with genetic haplotypes, a once flourishing national language (i.e., Yiddish), etc. Other much smaller ethnicities (notably Sephardi) exist. But, yes, because of the ability to convert, the idea of it being a "race" is incorrect.

There are some ethnic groups that are Jewish but it is a religion pure and simple.

Twain was the product of his time, that's all. We've moved past this with the exception of a certain unsophisticated class.

Most probably he was using the definition of "race" in the context of the social construct, rather than the "biological" context that both the Nazis and 9/11 preferred.

For Twain's *actual* opinion of of Jews, it's helpful to remember that his daughter Clara married one, of whom he said "Any girl could be proud to marry him. He is a man – a real man."

Of course you have not included the full quote from his letter, most likely because your hater friends don't talk about the rest of it: "Sampson was a Jew – therefore not a fool. The Jews have the best average brain of any people in the world. The Jews are the only race who work wholly with their brains and never with their hands. There are no Jewish beggars, no Jewish tramps, no Jewish ditch diggers, hod-carriers, day laborers or followers of toilsome, mechanical trades. They are peculiarly and conspicuously the world’s intellectual aristocracy."

He was, of course, wrong in his next to last sentence as is trivially demonstrable, but it gives an idea of his overall opinion of Jews. -- if you're going to quote him, please quote everything.

There are several definitions of "race," and niney's insistence that the President of France is a Jew despite being raised in the RCC indicates that he is using a different definition than most of us.

The usual reference to this quote is to an issue of the "Daily Pilot", dated Feb 28 2000. I couldn't find any reference to a Netanyahu speech in that issue using their online search. Netanyahu certainly did give a lecture at the local temple on Feb 27. The Daily Pilot reported the speech on March 4, and Netanyahu apparently did say:

"Had there been an Israel prior to World War II, there would not have
been a Holocaust," shared Netanyahu, continuing, "And had there not been
a Holocaust, there might not be a state of Israel today."

You are being unfair to me. Here in this thread I presented an eyewitness from Birkenau, who effectively destroys his own case. Who needs Zundel if we have mr Gross!

Obviously my opponents are completely uninterested in responding to this post and prefer to ramble on off-topic about who is really in charge in the US, the president or a Supreme Court judge.
