9/11 Commission records unsealed

Good news: History Commons have been uploading some 9/11 Commission documents, too. And more than I have, too, although they're not all useful (they've uploaded several files that are just withdrawal notices, for instance).

Bad news: some of the files are hard to read. I'm not sure if it's a problem with the files themselves, or scribd, or...? There's no analysis or comment on the files yet, either. Anyway, worth a look occasionally just to see what other documents are available.

The GTEC airfone records show three calls. In the Moussaoui trial they said Deena Burnett may also have received cellphone calls from Tom, but these didn't show up on his cellphone bill. So there's an unresolved question there, as Deena says she recognised his caller ID on the first call.

I'd add this bit to the equation (from your web site, emphasis added):

And airborne cellular calls are sometimes free because the signal is moving so fast between the cells that the software on the ground has difficulty, recording the call made, put the plane at risk because cellular phones can disrupt the aeroplane's automatic pilot, cabin-pressure controls.
(from The Hindu, in the Mobiles at Altitude page).

FBI had no record of Tom's cellphone call other than Deena's testimony. Even if the following is nothing more than speculation, things fit quite well this way: Deena received a (first?) call from Tom from his cell phone, where she identified the caller ID, but the station did not record the call. She also received tree (subsequent?) calls from him from the airfone. I seem to remember that in this thread it's mentioned that she claimed just one of the calls to show the caller ID, right? Things add up pretty well if seen this way. Total: four calls, as reflected in the Foundation's transcripts. One of the calls (from a cellphone) is not registered in the bill. Presumably Tom tried to use his cellphone again but it didn't work the second time, so he used an airfone. On the other hand, Deena did expect him calling a second time, so she didn't pay much attention to the caller ID after the first call and instead assumed it was him.

There's something that remains unexplained when including that bit though: the first call from Tom to his secretary before take-off, not being registered. Did he use 2600 tricks? (j/k)

Here's something of a catch-up post on the latest Commission records.

Ones that might be worth downloading:

*Ed Felt and his Flight 93 call (same as I mentioned yesterday)
*Immigration, Treasury and other records on each of the hijackers (birth dates, seating position on the plane, arrival time in the US, etc etc)
*Transcript of the Betty Ong call and other conversations within American Airlines
*Handwritten notes for an interview with Norman Mineta (not the MFR currently online)

I've also uploaded a bunch of other files that will be of interest to only a very few people, so I'm not going to grind through them all. If you're the type of person who must read everything that's available then check the entry for 24th of March here.

More updates, this time including documents found by History Commons.

  • Hijacker identities, for instance. Some truthers just love to tell us that the FBI are using the wrong photos, but the relatives apparently think otherwise. Read the details here.
  • Maybe they showed them the wrong photos. Maybe they just lied. Well, here's another claim: samples taken from the apartment of Jarrah's girlfriend matched remains recovered from the Flight 93 crash site. Read it here.
  • The NEADS MCC-T log for 9/11 is the most important two pages that you'll read anywhere, recording what was going on for their perspective, and (in retrospect) explaining why claims like them being notified of Flight 77 at 9:24 came about. Read it here.
  • The 9/11 Commission documents included one called "WTC Building 7", so naturally I ordered a copy. Unfortunately it's just a few handwritten pages, most of which are extremely hard to read, but if you're interested then grab a copy here.
  • "Hijacker Sightings" includes reports of hijackers supposedly casing cockpits, behaving suspiciously in planes and airports, all before 9/11. Also has a Commission staffer saying there's no way that James Woods story of encountering the hijackers is true. Here's the file.
  • "Major Charles Chambers" provides one of the few detailed looks at what went on at the NMCC on 9/11. Were they busily discussing the hijackings before the second impact, for instance, as David Ray Griffin claims? Uh, no. That and more are here.
  • "Chronology: US Identifications" contains short forensic reports on some of the hijacker IDs found in the Pentagon rubble, and concludes with a list of hijacker ID documents - passports, visas, drivers licences and so on. Here it is.
  • "Flight call notes and 302s" includes notes on 9/11 calls from Peter Hansen, Barbara Olson, Amy Sweeney, Renee May, Betty Ong, Todd Beamer, Mark Bingham and more. There's also a little background information on Daniel Lewin. Maybe 15% new material, so worth a look if you're interested in passenger or 9/11 call-related issues. Grab it here.
  • Part #2 of "Flight 93 Calls - General" include call summaries, briefings, the Star Fix calls (from flight attendants to United Airlines reporting the hijacking), and most usefully, an explanation of the terms in those GTE Airfone records I uploaded a while back. If the airfone records interest you then this will as well. Here's the link.

I've uploaded plenty of less interesting files that I won't detail here, but you can find them on this page. And History Commons have uploaded many more documents at their ScribD page. Note: an odd bug somewhere means a few of these documents look blurred and almost unreadable. Use the download option, though, and they'll display properly (you'll need to register for a free account but it only takes a moment).

A while ago I pointed to an FBI report that talked of an unnamed operator who was called by Barbara Olson from Flight 77, and asked to transfer her to Ted Olson's office number. Good news: the FBI have been a little inconsistent in their redactions and now we know this operators name - Mercy Lorenzo. More in this 9/11 Commission document, originally uploaded by History Commons (Lorenzo is mentioned on the very last page).

Great stuff as usual MikeW. I will browse through it when I get home from clinic. Now back to clinic.

Have they released anything on the President Bush/Cheney private interview? I'm sure that's something twoofers will bring up as "suspicious" and crap.

Man, I haven't been here in ages. What've I missed? Haha.

Interesting, the document on Jarrah's DNA match, makes note that NONE of the families of any of the hijackers have provided DNA samples. The tone of the language implies they were asked, but this is not explicitly stated.

Also, no date is given for this document. I assume it predates the DNA matching of some of the WTC hijackers, as this is not mentioned in the document.

Some interesting details in the "identification of hijackers file". Marwan Al-Shehhi was connected to the UAE military, Fayez Ahmed was an immigration officer.
