Merged 73 dead, hundreds hurt in riots after soccer game

And people are upset about mixed martial arts.

Soccer fans (crowds) riot a fair bit, don't they? Is it because the game itself is maybe a bit... ah... that is to say, they don't have enough to do in the stands?

I always hear the "boring" argument, which I find it silly when it comes from baseball fans. I think soccer riots are a result of heighten passion. Countries have gone to war because of soccer

I caught the tail-end of a report on this and thought it had happened in my country, and was then relieved when I realised it hadn't. Not a response I'm proud of.

I dunno if it matters what sport a person enjoys or doesn't. Football (soccer) is objectively boring.

Though some of the footwork is sweet. And the acting is compelling.

(gas-on-fire)

yeah same here i thought we would be involved somehow although my first thought was it would have had to be abroad (i dont watch football so i have no idea what games are on atm)

is Egyptian football normally this violent? or is this a symptom of the troubles this last year?

I see soccer like i see knife throwing. It requires a lot of skill, and years of training to do on a professional level, but visually, it isn't impressive. The only folks who appreciate it are other folks who do it.

...and now that I look at it, my soccer-smarm isn't on-topic really, and doesn't address the tragedy in Egypt. It's a terrible thing to happen, and it's just on a larger scale than I've seen in most other sports, but other sports crowds are hooligans just as well.

For years my idea on how to improve football has been denied. It's one simple word: landmines. Now, I know what you're thinking: "Surely the match would be over too soon?" Not so. The mines would be on timers, so they would arm and disarm at intervals throughout the game. You might run over the same patch of ground half a dozen times before being there at the right/wrong time.

This idea will work for pretty much all sports apart from MMA, which can be fixed with the phrase "Get off the floor, stop hugging and have a fight."

Many a time I've caught myself having a similar response.:(

Now then, Super Freddy, are you serious about countries going to war over soccer or is this just a saying I don't get because I'm American?

pressure sensors for when the footballers take a dive any longer on the ground than 2 seconds and that area goes?

I never understand that. How can you get sufficiently upset about a SPORTS GAME to riot ? Religion, I get. Politics, sure. But sports ???

My honest guess, and it's not meant to start a riot, is that the game is a bit dull and the fans are rowdy, loyal, beered up, and bored. Just shooting in the dark though.
