3.6 Magnitude Earthquake strikes D.C. region

Apparently the highest magnitude quake to ever strike in the DC area. I live near DC, and I actually felt it; I remember being half awake at the time waiting for my alarm to go off, and I felt this odd rumble that lasted for about 5-10 seconds and heard what sounded like a soft cracking sound, and thought to myself, "Wow, that was either a really big truck driving by or we just had an earthquake." Didn't think much of it until I turned on the news and it was all about the quake.

My first official earthquake in nearly 32 years. Wasn't bad, but I wouldn't want a worse one, that's for sure.

My first thought was that it was a train passing, then I realized it was 30 years ago that I lived near the tracks. Then my sleep-fogged brain concluded it was the air conditioning turning on, though I was puzzled why the a/c felt so much like a small earthquake.

I take it as a lesson in how misleading our impressions of sensory input can be, especially when unexpected.

My wife and I had pretty much the same sensation albeit without the soft cracking sound. We live near construction areas of the ICC and they've done blasting there before. My first thought was "why are they blasting at five in the morning?". I then thought that it might be an earthquake since it didn't feel like the blasting I've experienced before, and started laughing in my head at the ridiculousness of that idea.

ETA: You know the really weird thing is I got a sense of direction from the sound/vibration that seems to correspond to where the epicenter was. Is that likely or am I just imaging it?
