22-min Duke U. speech by Gary Johnson

An actor with no political knowledge winning two presidential elections by landslides.

I remember a Hollywood actor who won two presidential elections. He was also a two term governor of California, so we're obviously thinking about different people.

Hmm... Stein is thinking she might somehow get 5% of the vote this election. Perhaps she's being overly optimistic, but as I understand it, that's the number 3rd parties shoot for because of some kind of funding boost. I have no idea where Johnson might be at on %.

I'd be ecstatic for Jill Stein to get 5% of the vote. She's not my first choice by any means, but she's still better than the Democrat/Republican duopoly.

Ron Swanson transcends labels such as "fictional".

“I have been developing the Swanson Pyramid of Greatness for years. It’s a perfectly calibrated recipe for maximum personal achievement. Categories include: Capitalism, God’s way of determining who is smart, and who is poor. Crying, acceptable at funerals and the Grand Canyon. Rage. Poise. Property rights. Fish, for sport only, not for meat. Fish meat is practically a vegetable.”

Has any party other than Perot hit it? Did Perot even hit it?

You mean a Hollywood actor who played the role of a Governor of California

Betty White's way too liberal for Perot. That'd make for some uncomfortable pillow talk.

They had a little segment on Johnson on this morning's Morning Edition. He doesn't mention the word "Libertarian" much.... Talks instead of the "Liberty movement".
A fine semantic point, perhaps.
Much of his support (what little there is) seems to be from young folks; college students and such. Perhaps because of the general Libertarian position on drugs?
Or, being politically rather naive, the youngsters think all that talk of a nice happy society largely free from government interference sounds do-able.

I think Perot got about 20%, giving the election to the dems, who won with only 43%?

Without Perot, it would have been the biggest landslide in decades.

I expect Ronnie got more down-and-dirty, hands-on political experience in his years screwing over the SAG than most politicians do in a lifetime. The Governor gig was probably a cakewalk after that.

Not to mention the long term benefits of being a rat-fink for J. Edgar.

Well, no, but Republicans do like to think so. In the end, Bush lost because of what he did, not because of who else was in play.

The effect of Ross Perot's candidacy has been a contentious point of debate for many years. In the ensuing months after the election, various Republicans asserted that Perot had acted as a spoiler, enough to the detriment of Bush to lose him the election. While many disaffected conservatives may have voted for Ross Perot to protest Bush's tax increase, further examination of the Perot vote in the Election Night exit polls not only showed that Perot siphoned votes nearly equally among Bush and Clinton,[26] but of the voters who cited Bush's broken "No New Taxes" pledge as "very important," two thirds voted for Bill Clinton.[27] A mathematical look at the voting numbers reveals that Bush would have had to win 12.2% of Perot's 18.8% of the vote, 65% of Perot's support base, to earn a majority of the vote, and would have needed to win nearly every state Clinton won by less than five percentage points.[28] Furthermore, Perot's best results were in states that strongly favored either Clinton or Bush, or carried few electoral votes, limiting his real electoral impact for either candidate. Perot appealed to disaffected voters all across the political spectrum who had grown weary of the two-party system. NAFTA played a role in Perot's support, and Perot voters were relatively moderate on hot button social issues.[29][30]

No big fan of Reagan here, but funny, when I was growing up in California in the early 70's I recall him as governor....

Correct. The Bull Moose party did hit it in 1812.
And I think when the Democrats divided in 1860,the split away Southren Candidate, Breckenridge, did better then Stephan Douglas. But 1860 was an exceptional circumstance, and one, consdiering what that election led to, not to be ever repeated hopefully....
