Cont: 2024 Election Thread part 3

And I responded that Putin likely (according to people who have a lot more expertise than I do) did not attack Ukraine while Trump was president because Putin himself did not know how Trump would respond. So to ask me how I think Trump would have responded is contrary to the point. It is Trump's very unpredictability that prevented Putin from acting.

I suspect had Trump been the president in the past 4 years Ukraine would now be a Russian puppet state with Russian troops also in Georgia and eyeing the Polish border, while in the Middle East the death toll would have been even higher as Iran might have felt that it's back was against the wall enough to use it's nukes as a final strike.

China having made even more inroads in Taiwan would also be a possibility.
So IMO the world has been fortunate not to have a complete narcissistic idiot at the helm of one of the world's major nuclear powers.

The point is that Putin didn't invade Ukraine while Trump was president, probably because he didn't know what Trump would do.

What I would do, if I were making claims like that, is link to one of these experts putting their name on such a statement.

Or maybe consider the fact that Putin's iron grip on Russia was slipping and he he invaded Ukraine to silence dissent as "not loving the troops. Because not everything revolves around the Orange Weakling

May I direct your attention to the fact that "bat **** crazy" is not in the DSM?

But your calling her "◊◊◊◊◊◊* crazy" isn't shaming mental illness? Look, I'm not interested in getting into yet another back-and-forth squabble which seems to be dominating these threads too often now. So, let's drop it.

That is not that unreasonable claim. Man foreign affairs experts have said that the Biden administration has been a failure at deterrence, and that Trump—maybe, n part, because he was unpredictable—was successful in that area.

Many foreign affairs experts, big, manly, unidentified ones, with tears in their eyes have said, "Sir, Biden has been a failure at deterrence. How do you know so much about deterrence?"

Has it occurred to you that Putin didn't invade Ukraine during Trump's administration simply because he wasn't ready and not because he was deterred by Trump in any way? After all, Trump said he'd "... encourage them [Russia] to do whatever the hell they want," to any NATO country he didn't think was paying enough.

Yes, it makes total sense that Putin would have interfered in the election on behalf of the guy he views as a deterrent to his goals. Brilliant analysis.

...to any NATO country he didn't think was paying enough.

And Ukraine isn't even in NATO.

After Zelenskyy turned Trump down over the Biden announcement Trump basically told him that he wouldn't give him aid (technically dangled it as a tit for tat, but whatever). If Putin waited for Trump to get out of office to attack Ukraine because he thought that Biden was weaker than Trump then Putin is a moron, and I assure you Putin isn't a moron.

Even if Trump was an unknown, Biden was a known. It was known we would back Ukraine, it was known NATO would back Ukraine. Hell even most Republicans back Ukraine. This rationalizing makes no sense at all.

Today I drove past a yard full of Trump campaign signs, but they didn't seem very enthusiastic. Instead of getting new signs, they took a bunch of "Trump 2020" signs, taped paper over the "0", and wrote a "4" by hand.
(Insert Sharpie joke here.)

4 years ago, my area was filled with Trump crazies. Trump signs, flags and bumper stickers everywhere. There were regular convoys of horn honking pickups with Trump flags

There are a few about town this year. But maybe a 10th at most. They haven't been replaced with Harris signs. But any excitement for Trump is almost non-existent.

Yesterday in Milwaukee, Trump claimed Kim Jong Un was "basically trying to kill me," apparently getting N. Korea confused with Iran.

Illegals get $13K Loaded Visa card.

In Ukraine they live in mansions paid for in US Dollars.

Helene Victims get $750.

You can’t hate this Administration enough.

Hm.

I haven't seen anything at all in September except for eight Trump and Harris signs alternating between neighbors off in a cul-de-sac away from the main road. Two weeks from early voting and nothing. No radio ads, no TV ads, no billboards, not even a bumpersticker. I haven't received any campaign postcards in the mail box, nor has either party bothered calling on the phone. The political vacuum here has become massive. I don't know why. In the past, after the conventions they went full advertising. Now, you wouldn't know there was an election going on.

Is your state a safe one?

We have very few signs. I think the neighbors remember the 2016 and 2020 elections. Each remembers the houses next door. But now they are past it. The local issues are bigger here than Trump, as he will get the state (and the two automatic electors). The abortion referendum will give a good turn out. County votes will go 50/50 but the rural counties will all go Trump except the one with the Native American reservation.

Yeah, I'm getting quite a number of ads and campaign workers ringing the doorbell. I'm in PA.

It does seem like the Dems held back their ads until recently, letting the GOP burn their budget early.

We never really had Trump trucks around here. (Philly suburb) so I can't measure that.

Here in Eastern North Dakota I've seen an extreme drop in yard signs and advertisements. I've seen a total of less than 10 Trump yard signs and I've seen 1 window flag thing. I've probably seen about 3-4 Kamala\Walz signs. That's a huge change from 2020 when it was pretty common to see Trump signs throughout the city and a few Biden signs.

I agree. I think the motivation for Trump is dying.

My wife and I have a nice walk around the neighborhood, about a mile, mile and a half loop, on most nice evenings and we aren't seeing anywhere near the Trump/Maga flags/signs we saw last election. There's one or two, one or two Harris flags, and one that says "Politicians are Temporary WuTang is Forever."

There's still a few Trump bumperstickers on the back of trucks parked in driveways but those mostly seem old, leftovers from the last election.
