Cont: 2024 Election Thread part 2

The Arlington Cemetary fuss will not die down. Arlington is supposed to be one place above Partisan Politics, and the people running it are very keen to keep it that way. Trump was clearly trying to exploit it for his political gain.

As a veteran I wish I could believe that. But I'm sure the vast majority of magamutts could care less. trump has already trashed soldiers so many times in so many ways. No true patriot would want any part of trump.

Meanwhile, the hits keep on coming. Now it's top Republican donor Eric Levine -- never very enthusiastic about trump, but "reluctantly" supporting him after Nikki Haley ended her campaign -- who's blasting trump.
Republican mega-donor Eric Levine is criticizing former President Donald Trump for embracing Robert F. Kennedy Jr., calling it a "self-destructive" move for Trump's campaign.

In a new email obtained by Newsweek, Levine said of the additions to Trump's team, "It is hard to imagine a more self-destructive announcement. RFK is an anti-vax kook who sees conspiracies behind every tree and under every bed, and Gabbard is the former vice-chair of the DNC and co-chair of the 2016 Bernie Sanders for President campaign," Levine wrote in an email sent to thousands of people, which include donors in his core fundraising group. Funny how Harris's website doesn't mention. It's almost like she doesn't want to campaign on it.

It's been a little more than month since she was made the nominee. A month that also included the week long Democratic convention. Give it time.

I'm going to be very, very nervous for the next 10 weeks. But that said, I'm cautiously optimistic.

Every cycle is different -- Roe was overturned since last cycle.

The trend line continues. New poll shows Harris narrowly leading in GA.

The other factor is that Trump is simply not running a good campaign.
He is not making any moves towards getting the swing vote he seems to just wan to preach to the converted.

It does seem as though Trump's antics are being met with less and less amusement than they were in 2016.

He used to be able to mock the disabled, call women dawgs if he wasn't grabbing them by the pussy, or calling the wives of his opponents ugly, lead chants of "lock her up!" while making fun of or ridiculing dead military veterans.

For some reason the behaviour was seen as audacious comedy and the electorate delighted at the way he was sticking it to the po-faced lib-tards.

Something seems to have changed this time, though. Maybe his schtick is finally considered tired and uninteresting. He tried to repeat his old hits at the RNC and now he looks like a washed up Vegas act.

On the other side, the Democrats look far more energized and personable. I think ditching the heavy-handed identity politics was a good move, and they seem to have been able to more or less shrug off the Trumpians' behaviour as weird and stupid. The fact that the Trumpians have got angry about being called weird is itself a good thing, as now they look like the snowflakes. And indeed they are. Even their attempt to turn the attempted assassination into a show of strength has backfired as they have ended up whining about all the mean things the Democrats have said about them.

Even weirder, for me, is that they ended up doing the Democrats a favour by leaning into the narrative, which was true, that Biden was too incapacitated by age to continue running for president. This is something I agreed with the Trumpians about, even though most of the Democrats on this forum were outraged at the suggestion and thought it was just GOP smearing.

And yet, after Biden finally got the message and quit, it turned out that the GOP were not even ready to capitalize on the thing they were most arguing for. They somehow only had a play book to use against Biden, and once he was gone they looked like the dog who caught the car and didn't know what do with it.

It sucks to be them. It really does. Not only are they despicable people, but they are probably going to lose the election as well, meaning they will go to their graves as despicable losers.

I think you sized this up pretty well. There are so many differences between 2016 and 2024. No one had ever seen anyone in politics quite like Trump in 2016. No one had a clue how to respond in 2016. He knew how to own every news cycle and how to quickly move to something else.

But we have seen 8 years of his craziness this time around. Harris and Walz are running a masterful campaign. They are letting him own each news cycle but turning it into more crazy and weird. They are responding each and every time and showing that he keeps proving their point. Trump's attacks are just same, old same old. And in 2016, Trump was having fun. He isn't having fun now. He's old, bitter and scared. And it shows.

Meanwhile Harris and Walz are trolling him and ridiculing him with a smile.

So? They had no right to give their permission for a campaign stunt there.

This is another example where Trump ignores the rules. They just don't apply to him.

Out of curiosity Trausti. Have you seen the pictures of Trump and the others with big crap eating grins and thumbs up gestures in front of those graves Trunp just laid flowers on?

Do you understand that a military cemetery is a place of reverence? Does your hero have any sense of decorum?

I think it's pretty clear what happened: Trump and his team thought they could just break the rules, as usual, and when someone tried to stop them, they assumed, in their victim-complex. that it must have been a Dem Operative Trump Hater etc. and treated them accordingly.

Trying to blame the Cemetery Official is an extra level of low.

Of course, his supporters will never care long enough for this to matter.

He upset the libs. That’s all that matters to them.

The goal is not to pursuade the diehard Trump Maga loyalists to turn against him. The goal is to get the swing voters to turn out against him.

I know people are eager for Harris and the Democratic party to make a big deal about this, but for now they should not distract Trump's campaign from really screwing this up.

I think it's more likely he didn't even bother to check if there were any rules. He just assumed he could go wherever he liked and do whatever he liked.

Arlington says they sent the Rules more or less to everyone on the Trump team they could find - multiple people on that trip knew exactly what they rules were.

Harris' AND Harris's are both correct.

There are different rules for classical and biblical names. Go figure.

(Once a teacher, always a teacher!)
Once a student here, but what I was taught (by pedants, no doubt, but it seemed to make sense) was that a singular ending in an "S" differs from a plural. A singular is generally pluralized with an "S" or, if it ends with an "s," an "ES." A singular is made possessive with an "apostrophe-s" and a plural (of the usual sort that ends with an "S")* with an apostrophe alone. Aside from a certain degree of consistency it works backwards in a sense, that in a case where it is not obvious at a glance whether a noun or name is plural or a singular with an "s" ending, the presence of the "s" in the possessive will tell you.

*we except words like "data" which is an "s-less" plural.

I was in one of the swing states last week, where I saw constant Trump ads on TV portraying Harris as a radical leftist. That, I would think, is exactly what a conservative candidate would do to pull undecided centrists to his side.
