It only costs them if they lose the case and if they end up paying the damages.

President Trump can drag out any case until well after the election and in the unlikely event that the damages are actually paid, they won't come out of his pocket, it'll be some election related entity that no longer has any funds.

I don't understand why you guys have to say this every time.

WHO CARES IF IT COMES OUT OF HIS POCKET OR HIS DONORS?!?! It's coming out of the pockets of MAGAs and that's a positive thing. I mean, jfc. You guys would get ice cream and bitch about how cold it is.

If they "don't have any funds" then the people are saddled with a lien and can't use their credit for anything.

I swear to ******* God anything short of Trump being taken out back and beaten isn't enough for people here. If he, or his people, face punishment for whatever legal or civil breach he committed that is a net positive. If that means Taylor keeps up the lawsuit to bleed his campaign funds dry, awesome! It might not come out of his pocket, but who cares? I also guaran ******* tee that Taylor has more money than Trump.

I have read that, in fact, this sort of ticket-splitting is far less common than it once was.
 
A lot of GOP are very worried after the faisco Tuedsay where Trump tried to use the issue of inflation..probably the strongest issue the GOP Has....and blew it completly.
 
The whole Taylor Swift legal case is going to be about "Fair Usage". You can use a celeb's likeness without his or her permission in certain situations...satire ,for instance. But usually doing so in an ad is not covered under fair usage. I guess Trump might argue that the likeness was satire, not an ad.

it's more like somebody inviting you over for pizza and they pick up little caesars. like, yeah i'll eat it. but i'm not too amped

i want to see the actual guy go down, of course. that's seems normal to me, not crazy.

I can hardly imagine more blatant misuse. And it's not just a likeness, it's also a name. He simply claims Swift endorses him. He presents it as part of his campaign.

I think it is outrageous and stinks on ice, but when faced with a lawsuit he can always go the "Ha, He, It was just a joke" routine.
Fair Usage is a complex area of law. It is very gray as to what consituties fair usage and what does not.

Aside from that, even though one can feel a bit defeatist in the face of grim reality, we need to stop standing by and shrugging it off, on the grounds that he'll probably get away with it. We assume he'll get away with things so we let him get away with more things. The Republicans long ago figured out that just yelling helps, even if it's a lie, but somehow or other we are afraid to yell the truth. We don't have to become as obnoxious as the conservatives, but it's time to stop being deferential and overly polite. It's time to interrupt and yell "liar" too.

I would not put it past any current judge these days, but it seems a far far stretch to suggest that a campaign poster claiming the advocacy of a performer, when both the campaign is really going on, would constitute fair use, and even if it is not actionable, or if action is delayed and dodged, it ought to be possible to take it down.

Nazi 1: "The Jews are an inferior, subhuman race and must be wiped off the face of the Earth in order to purify the species!"

Nazi 2: *Red with rage* "How dare you sure! HOW DARE YOU! All good people know that Jews are an evil, calculating race that pulling the strings behind everything and they need to be wiped off the face of the Earth in order to protect ourselves!"

You very well might see him go down but nothing happens in the blink of an eye. That's just not how the legal system works at all. Trump has definitely been the benefactor of some rulings in his various cases, but that doesn't mean he's won them. He's buying time but if Harris wins it's curtains. His last chance is to win POTUS, and that's looking to be slipping through his fingers.

As previously mentioned, the constant defeatist mentality doesn't really help anything either. Politics is disheartening enough but to come to a message board full of Eeyore's is a little disheartening too.
 
idk if it’s a constant defeatist mentality. you’ll see a wide range of reactions to news, some good and some bad.

i don’t personally think there’s much to celebrate, even if he does go down. his actions were egregious borderline traitorous and done publicly and the justice system has barely been able to hold him accountable at all, if they ever do. there’s some major cracks in the system. i understand that might not be what you want to hear but it’s how i feel about it.

but the bright side is nothing i say or think has any particular bearing on any of it. i might not be helping by being critical of the efforts of the people who are supposed to stand up to people like trump and protect the people and often fail, but i’m not hurting them either.
