2020 Presidential Election

But the most important reason I will vote for Trump again is because he's not a politician, he's a businessman.

Yep, a businessman who managed to lose most of his initial inheritance during the longest bull run in history and even managed to bankrupt a casino.

A businessman.

As a side note, I love how someone can say, with a straight face, that the President of a country is "not a politician".

This is another weird and very hard to put into words quirk of America and our relationship with our leaders.

"Politics" is almost a dirty word in America. Politicians almost never use the term to describe themselves and it's practically pejorative if applied to a political rival.

When an American uses the phrase "politics" or "politician" they usually don't just mean "Person in politics" in the neutral sense of the term, there's a sinister implication to it. The closest term is probably the German Realpolitik, politics but only the shady, Machivalian, power-play part of it.

It's a mentality I've never liked. It's demonized the base concept of being in a place of political power so casually and ingrained it so deep into your cultural mentality that a Trump, someone riding the back of a "Well all politicians are dirty" mentality was sadly bound to happen sooner or later.

Not even a failed business man, but a slimy old-timey salesman, the kind that still thinks strip club lap dances are expensable. Or in this case, porn star payoffs.

He is a con-man gulling the credulous.

My mom has no valid ID and has voted Republican for most of her life. Her DL expired 10 years ago and it did not occur to me to convert the expired DL into state non-driving ID. As a result she eventually was purged from voter rolls. This year maybe I would have tried to fix the situation but I was afraid it would boil down to hauling her to DMV in the middle of a pandemic and hoping a long-expired DL or passport would suffice to get a new picture ID to allow her to register.

Just saying because a poster up thread asked what kind of person doesn’t have state-issued ID. I actually kind of agree with that sentiment and hoped people interested in social justice would work to rectify that situation. Maybe they have.

Though lacking memory my mom is pretty sharp re: sussing out what’s going on in the moment. She figured out on her own that Trump is a fraud and would probably not have voted for him. The ******* is robo-calling our house 3 times a day seeking money - from me, I guess, as I am the only registered voter in the household - and I’ve hung up on him at least 100 times. Meanwhile I’m happy to see Dems sending me mail even though my registration is a R. They *should* be targeting R’s IMO because at least a few of them can’t stand Trump. The R Senate candidate is awful as well although frankly I don’t care much for the D candidate either.

Me too. In fact I think it's amazing Trump is still slipping. I was sure he'd stop at 15% or so, but Biden's support just keeps growing.

I've learned lately that you can't post or discuss good news on this forum without a disclaimer, lest someone will inevitably come around and inform you that Trump can still win and that we were optimistic in 2016, too.

I found this interview with "The Mooch"* interesting. (Al Jazeera)

tl;dr @ 22:00 https://youtu.be/MY27g99EhIY?t=1320

He thinks Biden will win in a landslide. Note: this interview is before Trump's debate with Biden or his Covid-19 positive.

*Who is more articulate than I gave him credit for.

Anyway, on to more important matters. I wonder what's in my Netflix queue? :boxedin:

As with other causes, there's only so much that charity can do - particularly against an outright hostile state. I mentioned before that nobody I grew up with had what would be considered "proper" ID for many of these states until we were at least 21, and sometimes older. This is not because we lacked even stat-issued, valid photo ID - quite a few of us received these as students at public universities before we ever had a chance to vote, after all.

These are not considered "valid" though, because reasons. (In reality, the reason is that younger people tend to vote for democrats). In the 90s, this wasn't a problem for us - we voted absentee in order to avoid an hours-long trip each way to vote in person. Had we been in the south... who knows?

Are there charities and other groups holding voter drives, helping people get valid IDs, and the like? Naturally. Folks will even check to see that would-be voters havent been purged due to garbage like Crosscheck. But in the end, these are the same as poll taxes or "literacy" tests used to be. At this point, Dolt 45's goons are back to threatening violence, "protesting" outside voting locations in a clear attempt to intimidate voters.

You might want to check out the DMV website. Due to Covid it's possible that you can do everything online to get an ID.

In what State? There are 50 of them. Is this true if you don't have a credit card? My guess is no.

Call your DMV and see if there's anything they can do. Some states do renewals on-line, and many will make office appointments so you don't have to wait in line. You might also call the voter registrar and see if they can issue a voter ID card.

I can't blame him. A little over-zealousness is a natural consequence of rejecting complacency.

The real test is going to be the next election, and the one after that, and so on. Has the Trump administration caused a lasting shift in people's political engagement, or is everyone going back to bed in 2024 when it's Harris vs. some "inoffensive" Republican who's gone back to saying the quiet part quietly?

Trump has drawn the map. The 2024 Repub candidate will be somebody as evil as Trump, but smarter and slicker. Like Tom Cotton.

Looks like Trump only has single digit chance to win the election according to The Economist, the most generous chance for Biden at 91 percent.

I wonder what chance they would give Trump to win the popular vote?
