2020 Democratic Candidates Tracker

I was really, really hoping that O’Rourke would kick Ted Cruz (Reptile-TX) out of the Senate. For his presidential run, however, I think he needs to crank his Enthusiasm dial down a notch or two below the "motivational speaker on cocaine" level and start talking more about specific policy. If he's nominated, I'll gladly vote for him, but with all the other great candidates, he's not very high on my list yet.

...Isn't that how you got Trump as President?.
I just want to underscore what others have noted: Dump got (litterally) hundreds of millions of dollars of exposure by TV media broadcasting live his rallies. You just can't buy that kind of coverage. It was understandable from a network perspective because the guy is a ratings bonanza which, of course, translates to network profits.

Note I said "understandable" but made no implication that it was right. With the benefit of 20-20 hindsight, I would argue that it was not.

He has apparently qualified for the initial debate on the fundraising grounds:

May he pleasantly surprise us all there.

What? You can't seriously think Beto's throwing any bones to the right-wingers at this point in the campaign?

Not quite? If my distracted mind recalls correctly, the request Beto had made of the reporter was that this stuff not be released until after the Senate run. So it wouldn't really be Beto throwing a bone at this point in the campaign. With that said, it's far enough away from any election that what impact it has, other than increasing name recognition, should have faded away by election time, anyways, after having given plenty of opportunity for the previously mentioned folks to show what hypocrites they are.

I like him. I'd like to see more of him in the future. I'm not sold about him being the best of the candidates, though, especially when it comes to dealing with the Republicans in Congress. Still, from what I've seen so far, I'd definitely pick him over Beto and Biden, though, so that's a decent start for him.

I've watched a few interviews and the town hall and I like him as well. With so many good candidates I don't really have a favorite at the moment. I'd be happy with Warren, Sanders, Buttigieg, or Yang. But it's still early so that could change as I continue to research candidates and see debate performances.

ANd he has got to stop putting his foot in he mouth so often. He really needs to think before he speaks.

I see that all of the Democratic candidates are perfect and cannot make mistakes......

Do you really not see the criticism of various candidates by people who are likely going to vote Democratic? Could I borrow those Strawman Goggles for a while?

Mayor Pete (everybody calls him that because his last name is Buttigieg) gives an interview to Esquire. The guy is world-class at evading questions:

What's the single best plank in the congressional version of the Green New Deal and the single worst plank?

To me what's really important about the Green New Deal isn't like one of the elements of it, it's the concept. It’s the concept that we have a national emergency commensurate with a depression or a war.

One rather surprising thing: he does not appear to be a fan of Bill Clinton's presidency, on economic grounds:

When you were in high school in the nineties, were you turned off by Bill Clinton because of his third way, centrist approach to politics?

Yeah, I definitely grew up in a family that was skeptical of that. There was progress overall in the economy, but I think that period also laid the groundwork for where we are now, where we've gotten tremendous growth in the economy and tremendous growth in economic inequality.

They need Joe or a moderate governor. If the Dems treat this candidate like a progressive Christmas tree, hanging far left ornaments all over him or her they will lose.

MEDICARE for some, less expensive college, border security without being a bunch of dicks.

Nah, you're completely wrong. I said exactly that a couple of pages ago and it's apparently incorrect.

You must be using the same brand of crystal ball I have. (and they really don't need Joe)

I don't know if you're both wrong or you're both right. But my guess is neither of you actually have a crystal ball. Anyone's GUESS is likely to be as good as the next person. Remember, virtually no one in either party thought Trump would or could win the GOP nomination let alone the election.

I like Biden, but I don't see him winning. He may seem too old to people. Hell, he's older than the orange turd himself. A contrast to the doddering old fool would be nice.

I also believe MEDICARE for ALL is a winning issue. As for free college education, no. But a Democrat must run on making a college education more affordable. If you're going to run representing the middle and lower economic classes, do it!

This idea that another Republican light candidate is what the people want is absurd and obscene.

Apparently Mike Gravel is running again for president, although it seems three teenagers are doing the heavy lifting, by having him tweet attacks on other Democrats.

I wonder if Gravel will follow up that amazing campaign ad he had back in 2008:

Be sure to tell us your favourite bit.

Apparently this new group of kids only want to get Gravel in the debates and are calling themselves the GravelGang, which sounds like a copy of that other long shot, Andrew Yang who FiveThirtyEight have warmed up to slightly by writing up their own account of how he could get the nomination.

It's not looking likely, they say.

It's worth noting that the ACA passed be because it promised you could keep your current insurance. That should be instructive to all those on a MEDICARE for all platform.

I look back at the so called "dirt" the GOP had on Hillary and chuckle. It was God Damn non-existent . Hillary "deleted" emails turned into something which should have been ho-hum and mundane into something super-nefarious. The GOP's entire mud-slinging campaign was not about actual corruption ...but the possibility of corruption. How amazing is that? Hillary was as clean as my mother's kitchen floor. But she was clueless in battling their attacks. I absolutely believe Hillary would have made a great President. But I also ABSOLUTELY believe she was a terrible candidate. And I use to think Dukakis was bad.

Honestly, I never understood why she was this awful candidate. Particularly compared to Sanders, who was praising the Soviet Union's "prosperity" before they completely collapsed. She pulled off a wonderful convention, she left all three debates looking calm and rational while Dolt 45 sputtering in an ignorant rage. And all four events left her up in the polls. The only things I remember from the GOP convention was Melania's plagiarism, Ted Cruz refusing to endorse, and Laura Ingham's nazi salute.

No, what killed her was Comey's letter, lovingly handed to congressional Republicans, and the media's absolute refusal to discuss anything but her emails and how Dolt 45 supposedly knew how to thrill crowds. She looked poised, confident, and prepared, while Dolt 45 looked like exactly the destructive, hateful conman he...well, that he always has been.

Having a public option in the ACA would be a good stepping stone.

Keeping the public option better than just competitive with private insurance should not be discouraged and should not be difficult.

Eventually private insurers will pull out of marginal marketplaces (rural areas) and having the public option will begin to be seen as the smart choice for rural Americans. Aka: The Base of the GOP.

The only reason people trust their health insurance company more than their government is because most people have spent more time in the post office or DMV than they have on the phone with a health insurance company that is denying your claim.
