2012 End-of-World believer arrested

2012 End-of-World CT'ist arrested today in St. Louis (Well, I'm not sure if it counts as a conspiracy theory but it's certainly a 'woo' belief) after police discovered that he was behind the theft of a large amount of explosives and explosives related accessories (detcord, safety fuses, etc) from a joint police / FBI training center in 2007.

People often wonder why some folks bother to spend so much time and effort to combat these 'harmless' woo beliefs - I certainly haven't been posting much in the CT arena lately - but incidents like this one should remind us that even these silly, seemingly benign bits of crazy have the potential to blow up on us if some nutbar adopts them as their reality.

He should be sentenced with no possibility of parole before "The End of The World."

It won't happen - anyone seriously committed to this theory will not be able to admit they were wrong, they will modify their theory, extending the date or claiming to have somehow 'saved' the world. Look at the 8 times the Jehovah Witnesses have predicted the end of the world! To us (the somewhat more sane), the date set is the most important thing and without it, the cult has no meaning; but to the cult member the date is not nearly as important as the belonging and community they find therein, and which they cannot give up. They will believe ANYTHING after the date has come and nothing has happened, so long as they get to keep their cult.

I, for one, would like to know what he needs explosives for. Is he planning to assist in the end of the world by blowing something up? Planning to defend himself from fate by setting booby traps?

Or is 2012 just one of many more delusions that he's part of? I can't find anything in the news over here beyond the linked articles and clones or offshoots of same. Is there anything else on it that anyone could point me towards? (Thanx in advance, of course....)

Ha, you are such an optimist!

My guess is that some clown will "reinterpret" the Mayan calendar and figure out it didn't end in 2012 but actually in 2021, then we'll be stuck with another decade of this!

That's what I wondered. I think that, deep down, he doubted the end of the world would really happen so he was going to try blowing it up himself just to show he was right.

Or maybe he's just a complete whackjob. ;)

From what I've seen, there seem to be two camps to the 2012-world-ending people. There are those who believe that it is a literal ending of the world, then there are those who believe that it is an end to the world as we know it. This camp splits into those who think that there will be dramatic changes in the world that may or may not be so bad and those that seem to think that 2012 will see the total collapse of society. This guy probably falls into that last camp.

Of course, saying the world as we know it is going to end is a convenient cop-out for when things don't go down the crapper. They can always find something(no matter how inane) to point to as proof that the world ended Dec. 21 2012.

I still find it strange that people are willing to believe that a group of people who thought they had to sacrifice children to make the Sun rise everyday were/are an infallible source of information.

It's even more strange given that said child sacrificers never actually said that the world would end in 2012. Believing in the wisdom of the ancients is silly enough. Believing in the wisdom of the ancients that doesn't actually have anything to do with the ancients, or wisdom for that matter, is even sillier.

I always believe the Mayans. They had special knowledge and stuff. That's how they were able to take over the world. Remember when they sailed to Spain and took it over? Why do you think we all speak Mayan now?
