2012 Debates

I don't understand why people seem to be focused on the "binders full of women" comment. Clearly he meant binders full of resumes from women.

TRENDING: 'Binders full of women' raises brows

The more important part of that answer is that Romney didn't answer the question. The question was about pay equity and he didn't say anything at all about pay equity in his answer.
Romney did nothing wrong on that point. Anyone who has been in a position to hire someone knew exactly what he meant. It just sounded really creepy.

I don't know, it also sounds awfully patronizing. It suggests that he had to work extra hard to find qualified women. So the message he says is, "gee, you're all getting screwed, but I'm such a nice guy that I'll give you the shot," when instead he should be leveling the playing field. The question isn't about Romney, it's about the climate.

Surprised Obama didn't point out that Paul Ryan opposed the Lilly Ledbetter Act. Too obvious, perhaps.

No. What's the Lily Ledbetter Act and why should he have pointed out that Paul Ryan opposed it?

Remember, you may think me awfully ignorant if you have to explain this but that's what candidates have to remember when they're performing for votes.

Not a KO by Obama but some nice shots. Funny how many of my "Conservative" friends think it was a draw & only because of the moderator.

There were just so many knock out punches! I loved all of it, and the closing was AWESOME!

Romney took a big chance in being so audaciously dishonest in the first debate with more than enough time for Obama to call him on it.

20% across the board! Yeah right!

I kept wanting him to call Romney on his bull in the first debate, and he definitely did tonight.

dew de dewwww. dew de dewwwww

A popup under the screen said Lily sued Goodyear over nineteen years of being paid less than her male coworkers.

GREAT point by Romney about the counterfeits in China. Not only do they rip off intellectual property rights, but they also support slavery and mob-related activities.

not slavery. those cages are to keep people out, so says Mitt

Here's the link to the CNN poll.

I think I read somewhere that before the first debate almost 80% expected Obama to win the debate. Part of why he lost so badly is that he was almost universally expected to win, which made his listless performance even more shocking.

Just to break down the numbers a little more:

Looking at party breakdown, 33% said they were Republicans and 33% said they were Democrats.

OK, so by that metric it was a fairly even sample. Let's assume that all of the Republicans thought that Romney won and that all of the Democrats thought that Obama won. The remainder is 34%, and of those 18% thought that Romney won, 38% thought that Obama won and 44% were undecided.

both candidates said that government doesn't create jobs. i have to wonder what my ten years in the navy were.

Candy Crowley: what a miserable piece of lying garbage. The Republicans rolled over by allowing all 4 debates to be moderated by liberals, and tonight they paid the price for their weakness when Crowley decided to waddle her fat ass right into the middle of the exchange and start cheerleading for Obama on the Libya issue.

CNN is already admitting the mistake. I will be surprised if the execrable Crowley has the moral courage to publicly apologize to the Romney campaign and to the American people.

All in all a good debate though, I have to give the edge to Obama on points.

Now, now. She said during the back-and-forth that he did mention a terrorist act. She also then said to Romney, but you're right that it took a couple of weeks to the (error on) the video reaction to come out.

She re-iterated that after the debate and couched it in terms of apologizing.

Now that that "miserable lying piece of garbage" has actually adjusted her error, will you apologize? Or will someone have to post here that he/she "will be surprised if the execrable MikeDenk has the moral courage to publicly apologize...."

I'd give it to Obama:

1) He needed to come out with fire, and he did
2) Romney got schooled on his Libya answer
3) Romney's answer to how his was different than Bush, was just uncomfortable
4) The contrast came across as Obama connecting to average people, and Romney being an executive.

Agree.

But there was no slam dunk. Being good enough is not good enough. The Oval office is not a place for mediocrity. It is also not a place to BE it is a place to DO and what has Obama done to make our lives better? I am not better off than 4 years ago. And blaming Bush is getting old.

What is more is that it seemed to go back and forth. I think one can cherry-pick some Romney scores.

The problem with Obama, so far, is that he hasn't explained how he is going to do things differently the next four years. He continues to rely on emotional arguments while Romney (at least on the economy) is making logically sound arguments even without specifics.

Romney seems to be better at getting his reasoning across. Obama says what he's done is good, without giving solid reasons. On the other hand, Romney sucks at social issues and Obama is not taking advantage of that.

Classy.

So both debates were a wash?

I am, & I say the same about your blaming Obama.

Obama won this one. Deal with it.

More polls:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/17/presidential-debate-polls_n_1972357.html

A CBS News poll conducted using an online panel of uncommitted voters found a 37 percent plurality said Obama won the debate, while 30 percent said Romney did and 33 percent said it was a tie.
. . .
Microsoft Xbox, working in partnership with the the polling company YouGov, conducted a live poll among more than 30,000 respondents who tuned in to watch the debate and answered survey questions via Xbox Live's election channel.

The Xbox sample was neither randomly selected nor scientifically projective of any larger population, and the adult participants skewed heavily younger and male.

However, the sheer size of the participant pool allowed the Xbox/YouGov pollsters to isolate 988 respondents who said they were completely undecided before the debate, and they judged Obama the winner by a 51 percent to 17 percent margin. After the debate, most remained undecided, but 28 percent said they now will vote or lean to Obama, while just 10 percent said they will vote for Romney.

The most annoying thing for me was Romney claiming he'd 1) make us energy independent in eight years.
That's the one that rang my chimes. He could lease every friggin' square inch of the USA on his first day in office and we wouldn't energy independent in eight years. I haven't followed the follow-up but I hope someone brings up this steaming pile of BS and really nailed Romney on it.
