2004 Election Stolen

Just by posting that article you will be painted as a CTer.

My wife participated in a ludicrous "election fairness watch" in the city of Detroit in 2004. Basically the Democrats had hundreds of people trained (a couple of hour class a few days before, which she attended) to stand outside and watch for people (read: Republicans) challenging voters. If there were and people were turned away, she was given a phone number to call and one of 50 "roving lawyers" would make a beeline for that district.

She didn't see Jackvs Sqvatvs.

Later on that evening, with Michigan well in the bag for Kerry, that group made a quick announcement that the election was fair, g'nite!

Of course, if it had been a close fight, or if Bush was winning, they'd have raised holy hell about this or that minor discrepancy. They were just waiting, drooling, to make a big stink about it, capitalizing on the OMG-Bush-stole-2000-from-Gore festering sentiments. Because you all know those dirty, stinking Republicans were plannin' all kinds of hijinks for the 2004 election.

Yep, and you can be sure if a Dem wins in 2008, the Republicans will pull the same thing. The horse is out of the barn on this, and we will never again have a "fair" election.

At least she tried to help catch the thieving buggers ( sorry she wasn't able to be where the rect. breathers were pulling that). By the by, 2000 turned me into a yellow dog democrat and if God (no I don't believe, but...) herself came down and ran as a repooplican I would vote for whatever ran against. And in case you think this inappropriate, many descriptive words concerning my attitude about repooplicans have been left out for politeness sake. Congrats to your wife though- she sounds cool!!

Politicians discovered long ago that it was in their best interest to divide and conquer. Humans love a good story and they love a narative where the good guy wears white and the bad guy wears black. This way there are no conundrums, no difficult decisions. How should you vote? Hell, you don't even need to read the voting pamplet, just vote the way the party tells you to vote. Be a good little party member and do your part.

You see, the story that the politicians feed us is that the other party is evil, vile scum who stay up late at night drinking with the devil when in fact Republicans and Democrats hang out together, throw back drinks together and slap eachother on the back and laugh at the stupid people who buy into the asinine notion that one side is evil and the other saintly.

Don't be manipulated by politicians. Hey, be a Democrat and believe that Democrats are more often right than the Republicans. That's a reasonable position. But if you honestly believe that politicians (AKA humans) have taken sides based simply on good and bad then I'm afraid my friend that you are ignorant of history. Don't be one of those people. Use critical thinking. Be skeptical of ALL politicians because there is good reason to be. Democrats as well as Republicans lie, cheat and steal. Hell, they even murder. Both parties are known to take bribes and consort with criminals.

You've been sold a bill of goods my freind.

No democrats manipulated me into my position. Kath. Harris and the so-called supreme court did - with help from the state of Texas ( I am a Floridian). I am quite thoroughly aware the there are bad/incompetant/venal Democrats - not to mention the loathesome ("look at me, I'm good as god but they won't put me in office") Nader. Show me some real choices that are not any of these and I'll vote for them - right now, for good or ill, Democrats are the best we have of what we have. What the Democrats did not do was steal an election or two.

So, it's simply a matter of degree for you? That's fine, I can deal with that.

Thank you for the response.

tsk.

Chin-up, dem voters.

November election is less than 6 months away. Here you have a real chance to capture both houses, just as the repubs did in the previous three elections. No more Newt. No more Delay. Very little Rove (so far as you know). Only B Boxer and the likes from Cal-I-Forn-I-A.

Too me, thus far, it is too close to call for the house (with all seats being run). The senate is going to remain the same (with only a third of the seats being run). I'm following my company's lead and hedging a Dem House Majority win...but only by a percentage or so. No since knee jerking. Surely the Repubs can out-cheat the Dems in most races.

Just a matter of degree...right?

What the Democrats did not do was steal an election or two.

If we ignore elections that the Democrats did steal, such as Kennedy in 1960 election. Stealing elections has been a Democrat hobby in Chicago for over 100 years.

If it was true that the Democrats had never stolen an election that would just indicate that they're not as competent as Republicians. Being incompetent would be a reason to not vote for them.

Yeah, I was pretty impressed. I was more worried about her physical safety than anything. She wasn't employed at the time so she had plenty of free time to participate! :)

A word on the exit poll phenomenon. Kennedy almost had me going there, when he pointed out that Republican strongholds had similar exit poll participation to Democratic ones. I, too, had blamed the exit poll discrepancy on the grumpy voter phenomenon, and assumed Republicans were less likely to talk to pollsters than Democrats.

Then I remembered that some of us just can't stand polls, enough so that ignoring them isn't enough. We actually lie. If you take into account just a few liars, then the exit poll discrepancies are pretty easily explained.

I doubt these guys actually believe the election was stolen. It's all about keeping the 2000 "Gore was robbed" thing going until 2008.

Woo woo proof? Think it'd be tough for a Republican to go find some barely-Kerry states and dig up some Johnny Cochrane-like doubt? Look how easily people buy into WTC CTs, which are just a jumble of half-assed ideas thrown out there.

As to the general topic of election irregularities, the basic problem is that there are two kinds of vote fraud that happen to some degree:

1. People being allowed to vote who shouldn't, either because they already voted, aren't citizens, don't reside in the district in which they're trying to vote, or are otherwise ineligible by law (e.g. convicted felons).

2. People who are entitled to vote being turned away by election officials, because they supposedly haven't provided sufficient proof that they aren't actually in category 1, or who simply don't bother to show up at the polls because they think this will happen.

They're both legitimate problems that a good electoral system should try to address. What causes all the fighting is:

(a) to some degree there's a trade-off between the two: you can reduce category 1 by toughening up the proof voters must produce to demonstrate their identity and eligibility, but that's going to increase category 2, and vice versa,

and

(b) Republicans believe that they're hurt mostly by category 1, and Democrats believe that they're hurt mostly by category 2.

So both parties want to crack down on electoral irregularities, but they each want to focus on the one that hurts them.
