military

I rarely come in here, much less post, but I thought this article, and the dilemma it presents to my profession, was worth a thread, for comments on how others feel... http://www.cnn.com/2007/HEALTH/07/31/jama.guantanamo.ap/index.html Here is the quote of relavence for me, and what I'd like...

This is sort of a spinoff of the Korey Rowe arrested for desertion thread. There was a quote from Dylan Avery about people being quick to condemn Korey and not having had military service themselves (I'm paraphrasing). Please list your military service and term if you are no longer in. I'll...

The 82nd Airborne has long held the honor of being the first responders (along with the Marines) to any American crisis requiring a military solution. However, since our military is stretched so thin in Iraq they are no longer capable of responding to anything: As evidence of this...

Again, the troops are caught in a Catch-22 dreamt up by an administration who (for the most part) never served combat duty. No military solution to Iraq - U.S. chief POSTED: 9:18 a.m. EST, March 8, 2007 BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- The new commander of U.S. troops in Iraq has warned that military...

In deference to RSLancastr, whose recent thread I helped to thoroughly derail by responding to Ivor the Engineer's comment on the apparently contradictory concept of "military honour": I responded that I felt that the concept was essential to sustain armed forces, and that we will need armed...

http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/01/02/gays.military.ap/index.html Big risk that, meeting some gay servicemen. How many years did he wait to do that?

According to Iraq Study Group report (http://www.usip.org/isg/), it's $3 billion for FY 2006. That is less than two weeks of spending by US on Iraq. The report says this along with the main comment that the Iraqi troops lack equipment. With all the corporate outsourcing we have seen, wouldn't...

For all the believers in and proponents of paranormal phenomena, none of them seem to have a clue what effect something like real precognition would actually have on the world if it were widespread. If you can even bring yourself to think about it, might anyone here be able to think of a good...

How much does military conduct and policy in peacetime affect support for wars? I've noticed that the US and British militaries antagonized some pretty strong special interest groups in their respective countries, and after the Afghan/Iraq war started, either there was little support to begin...

The act that would set standards for treatment of illegal combatants. House passed it September 27, 253-168 (12 abstentions). Only 34 Democrats voted in favor of it. Link. See how your congressman voted. After a late amendment was defeated today, the Senate is expected to pass a nearly...

I was going to post this in the silly Neo-Nazis Thread but I think it deserves it's own silly thread. I submit this paper on America's Military Population. A very, very well done paper, IMO. Full of useful tidbits about the ethnic, cultural and sexual makeup of our military. What most...

I know, I know, it's just another "Mephisto Race-Baiting-Rant," but it IS current news. Watchdog: Neo-Nazi sympathizers slip into U.S. military Friday, July 7, 2006; Posted: 7:44 p.m. EDT (23:44 GMT) WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- Neo-Nazis and other white supremacists have increasingly been able...

Recently the documentary "Why We Fight" was released on DVD and brings up some very interesting points about the United States Military Machine and the theory of the U.S. Military Industrial Complex, first proposed by President Dwight D Eisenhower decades ago. Do you believe that the U.S...

On Al Arabiya no less, Donald Rumsfeld said the following in response to the call from retired Generals for him to join them in retirement: We know that there are at least six retired generals on his case but how true is it there are "thousands and thousands" of admirals and generals...

As a military guy entering the home stretch of my service but also cognizant of the growing number of retirees and very limited health care/hospitals/etc, I am seriously concerned about what kind of health care I can expect when I retire. Needless to say I'm not counting on it exclusively. I...

Let's hear it for truth and credibility. Got a couple minutes, Armstrong Williams?

Here is my Military Isolationist's Manifesto...agree or disagree with it? Our current international scene is neatly divided into autonomous states. One state cannot impose its governance on another. Each state, essentially, is responsible for itself. We are a world community only inasmuch as...

BAse Closings hit blue states harder Defense Department data show that "blue states," those that voted for Democrat Sen. John Kerry in the 2004 presidential election, are slated to lose a combined 24,289 military jobs while their "red state" counterparts, those states carried by President Bush...

Iraqi female detainees illegally detained, raped and sexually violated by United States military personnel. 15 Apr 2005 Iraqi female detainees have been illegally detained, raped and sexually violated by United States military personnel. Women who stay at home in traditional roles are more...

No, I am not giong to post some lame conspiri-thread about 'The US is going to make everyone serve in the army! Egads!' What I AM looking for is thoughts on the matter. A number of developed nations already have mandatory service periods of typically 2-5 years, around the ages fo 18-20. They...

Here we have revealed our current military's priorities: 1. Keeping gays from serving. 2. National Security. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,144375,00.html (posted from Fox news in case anyone thinks this is a "Left" story) Once again the gay issue trumps all... can someone please...

I was surpised to not find a thread on this... http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=519&ncid=519&e=6&u=/ap/20050114/ap_on_re_us/gays_military_linguists

This story just breaks my heart. Some of the last words by Staff Sgt. Russell Slay, who died Nov 9 in Al Anbar, Iraq. Written to his 5 year-old son, and read aloud at his memorial service in Houston. Reading this story put a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. I wonder if the mistakes...

The lastest draft rumor is that the govt would draft doctors, cause theres such a shortage in Iraq. Can the govt do this? Draft people based on their job. Has this been done in the past?

Not that it makes any difference to voters at this late date. But there is a new twist today on Kerry's military records that has been brewing for some time. There is reason to believe that Kerry did not receive an Honorable discharge when his period of enlistment ended. He does have one...

Excerpt from, "The Men Who Stare At Goats", by Jon Ronson Let me know how far you can read it without laughing. Or saying, "Is this some kind of satire?"

From: "Susan Cooper" <[email protected]> Subject: PROUD PARENTS OF THE MILITARY Date: Sunday, May 23, 2004 9:22 AM This post has been deleted as SPAM, following the reports of three posters, by tim. The decision may be appealed, as always, to Linda. I have retained a copy of the post for...

I was watching the Panorama special (UK, BBC1 - see website here ) on the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. It was an excellent program, fairly balanced and with interviews from all the major players - Lindy England, Graner, some of the lawyers representing the accused soldiers, the camp commander and...

I have never been in the military nor have I ever been interested in joining. Once, my daughter expressed an interest and it bothered me deeply. I had to keep reminding her that a commitment to the military means you just might have to kill someone one day. In order to have a functioning...

From Jane Chastain, World Net Daily: "...with all the gender norming – the lowering of physical standards for women in the military – and the pressure to assign and promote women to positions for which they are ill-suited and unqualified, all female officers now are viewed with suspicion..."...
