Quick note - the problem with Youtube videos not embedding on the forum appears to have been fixed, thanks to ZiprHead. If you do still see problems let me know.
After several recent high-profile cases in which it was proven that innocent people had been jailed based on confessions obtained through torture, the Chinese gov't has finally passed a law that any evidence obtained through torture will no longer be admissible in the courtroom; and furthermore...
This is outrageous. 10 workers in 5 months.

Google announced today that they will no longer censor search results in China -- but they are not leaving China. They will get around the legal issues (or attempt to) via a legal technicality, referring the China site through their Hong Kong site (which is not censored).
Now, this whole thing...
This is tragic:
Allegedly Shaikh thought he was travelling to China to launch a pop career that would bring world peace. Hopefully China will come to its senses.
The Chinese have not yet told Akmal Shaikh he is to be executed and will not do until 24 hours before he is to die.

I can't see much in this method that is truly humane. If you are to take someone's life would it hurt to let them make final farewells...
Beijing Adds Curbs on Access to Internet
The communist party is not supposed to be religious, but they do seem to be very puritanical.
Is censoring porn because the Chinese are actually that puritanical or because it is a pretext for censoring political speech or both?
Most Westerners seem to support the right of the people of Tibet to independence, or at least autonomy within China. I suspect this goes for all religions, as well as atheists, despite the fact that the native population is predominantly Buddhist, a religion with scant observance in the west...
I've long believed that capitalism and representative democracy are where the world is ultimately headed. Communism is pretty much dead, and countries have flocked to the democracy/capitalism model over the last twenty years.
But there is a significant and disturbing exception to this trend...
SHANGHAI — Some of the world’s biggest corporations are facing intense pressure from China to allow the state-approved union to form in their Chinese plants and offices. But many companies fear admitting the unions will give their Chinese employees the power to slow or disrupt their operations...
Never let it be said that Chinese justice isn't swift. They committed their "crime" of trying to get approval to hold a protest only during the last two weeks and they're already off to prison for a year.
Emphasis mine.
"Will you withdraw your request for a permit, or would you like to go to a...
This cropped up on another forum
I was suprised not to find it here too, but that may have more to do with the current reliability of the search function than the present state of reality.
Nonetheless my question was this.
How popular is Feng Shui in China? Would using Feng Shui in...
So I recently got banned from BoingBoing for getting involved in a thread on China and Tibet that I thought was pretty offensive.
While I'm angry as hell and think their moderation was unjust, I'm just itching to talk about it some more. So I thought I'd bring the topic over to JREF, as I know...
I assume that everyone's heard about the earthquake in China by now. As of last count, over 40,000 dead, and over 5 million homeless. It is shocking, it is tragic...it is one of those things that tends to just leave you feeling numb.
And yet, for all the tragedy here, I want to highlight one...

I assume this is only news because it's happening, but can a lawyer please tell me this completely frivolous and will go no where.
Seeds of a boycott against the West, particularly France as well as American companies or symbols thereof such as McDonalds and KFC seems to be brewing in China. This is an interesting attempt to turnabout, story here:

First, let me say up front that I in no way condone the ways the Chinese government abuses human rights, in Tibet or elsewhere.
However, the recent crisis and it's international reactions have left me a little puzzled.
In two places (Iraq, Afganistan), Western countries have recently entered...
I was thinking today that, for all the news that we see about China in the international media, it covers only a tiny portion of what actually happens here, and generally does it from an outsider's perspective. I thought it would be interesting to at least some forum members if I supplied...
Not sure how many have heard about this, a quick (far from comprehensive) check of the forums revealed no posts about it.
This week, a group of protesters from the US, UK, and Canada went to the Great Wall and unveiled a large banner calling for freedom for Tibet in both English and Chinese...
I hear all sorts of perspectives on marriage. Those who think monogamy is the proper standard, those who think monogamy is a tool used to oppress women, those who think that polygamy is terrible, those who think that polygamy is natural, etc.
But virtually ever culture in the world has some...
What is Yahoo thinking about in China? It looks like they have given information about users to the Chinese Government, and in at least two cases the users have been sentenced to long prison terms.

Define "intentionally."
Do you get the feeling this might be used as an excuse to kill anyone with SARS to try to prevent its spread? It's certainly quicker and cheaper than trying to cure it.
