John Oliver attacks my User Name sake. This is something I will not stand for. I'm starting a campaign and urging all fair minded people to join me.
John Oliver presents: The enduring influence of Ayn Rand, ‘selfish *******’ (video)
Please boycott John Oliver and make a *tax deductible...
Dr. Gregory Sadler of Marist College recently discussed Ayn Rand's The Virtue of Selfishness in his Spring 2013 Ethics class and posted the video to YouTube:

I remember that my professor in Philosophy 101 discussed Ayn Rand and that the textbook had an excerpt from the introduction...
"You can't be Objectivist and Christian at the same time!", piquantly squealeth the socialist who fancies himself clever. "I gotcha!"
Sadly, you cannot be socialist and Christian, either.
Jesus said to help your neighbor. He didn't say to pull out a gun and force your neighbor to help your...
I am interested in knowing what James Randi and people here think of Objectivism and Ayn Rand. As many of you must know Ayn Rand was athiest and considered the founder of Objectivism, which is the belief that you must live your live by reason and rational thinking. Objectivist are also usualy...
Lululemon Athletica CEO Dennis Wilson has been removed from his executive duties but remains chairman:

Many here remember that Lululemon is allegedly a good company. Its founder branded...
I'm convinced Libertarians have no respect for the social contract, that outlaws are the purest libertarians, and the fatal flaw of it's cousin, objectivism, is the assumption that humans generally behave rationally. Somebody try and change my mind. I'm listening.
Atlas Shrugged is being made into a series of movies. The first one is due out in April.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0480239/
If a screenwriter can make a good screenplay out of the source material, he/she deserves not only an Oscar but a Nobel Prize.
I wonder if one of the movies will just...
Didn't see a thread on this yet, though I thought it would be interesting since this is a name that gets brought up quite frequently here.
Some select quotes for those too busy to read the whole article:
The Medicare claim is still shaky, in other words.
Interesting. Does this diminish...
Because I was thinking the thread "Health care - administrative incompetence" is the wrong place for the discussion on whether slavery was justified but taxation is theft.

I suggest that the discussion about whether...
Sometimes there are some things on this forum that I just don't get. One of them is the hate and ridicule on Ayn Rand. I don't know that much about her other than she was a famous author who wrote some seminal works that made her stand out from the crowd.
I tried to read Atlas Shrugged in...
Open question to all free thinkers:
In Ayn Rand's interview with Mike Wallace in the 50's (availble online) she mentioned that she can find no rationale for helping one who is less fortunate then oneself. It appears that Ayn's philosophy on this point is an extreme version of survival of the...
This has been pointed out by several blogs, but it's very revealing. The NY Times had Adam Kirsch, a writer for the center-left political mag the New Republic, review Ayn Rand and the World She Made. That Kirsch is not familiar with Rand's work or her philosophy is apparent in this passage...
Somehow I don't think so. I disagree with her conclusions, but she was ultimately a materialist/realist who needed concrete proof of things.
But so many of the truthies seem to be Libertarians, and she is usually take to be the founding mother of that school of political thought.
Any thought...
I happened to be perusing the JREF thread about Ayn Rand the other night while my television was on.
"Its' a Wonderful Life" came on, and it hit me that two literary charachters could'nt be more philosophically different.
Who is more necessary to...
From the NY Times
Read it and weap. Some corrupt cases of arrested development had the vision to name their company "The John Galt Corporation," and then get the job of being incredibly, tragically mediocre at doing some very complicated, difficult work.

Ayn talks about her philosophy of Objectivism, and her ideas that altruism is immoral (strongly disagree there). Mike Wallace is a nice guy, and you may not agree with everything Rand says...but you must admit that watch him try to ask her questions is...
If people didn't believe in a God what would they believe in instead?
There are billions of people living their lives according to a moral code apparently bestowed on them by a benevolent omnipotent entity. This belief brings comfort to these people and makes them happy. Supposedly.
I just...
Personally, I never read it and don't really know what the fuss is all about.
But the forums are where I first heard about Ayn Rand, so, if anybody is interested, rumours of a movie of the book "Atlas Shrugged" are floating around.
Angelina Jolie is apparently a RandFan, and sought out...
Read this article this morning, while waiting for a load. Your thoughts?
I thought this part was illuminating...
Interesting facts, and an equally interesting view.
I accepted years ago a General Discharge from the Army, mainly because I subscribed to the notion that my ill considered and...
I find that one can take parts of Ayn Rands philosophy and leave other parts alone; it is not all or nothing- She and Nathaniel Branden led me to atheism and more appreciation of rationalism- using reason than whims or faith. As a liberal , I disagree with her economics. I hope she inspires more...
This is jsut an opinion.
I have just finished reading Atlas Shrugged and it has to be the worst, most poorly written idealogically driven book i have read since reading the communist manifesto.
Was Rand some kind of nazi idealogist or something?
because that is the impression I have formed...
Greetings. I've been lurking on here for quite a while, finally time I posted.
As I was driving home on Xmas eve, I caught part of the audio version of A Christmas Carol on the radio. Having just finished reading Atlas Shrugged a couple weeks ago gave me an interesting perspective on it. I...
