• Due to ongoing issues caused by Search, it has been temporarily disabled
  • Please excuse the mess, we're moving the furniture and restructuring the forum categories
  • You may need to edit your signatures.

When we moved to Xenfora some of the signature options didn't come over. In the old software signatures were limited by a character limit, on Xenfora there are more options and there is a character number and number of lines limit. I've set maximum number of lines to 4 and unlimited characters.

Why is this sub-forum not used any longer?

The Latest Commentary section used to be the source of some lively discussions. Personally, the three or four comments posted to the SWIFT/Commntary, itself, don't do many of the articles justice, and I used to rely on finding the comments/haggling here. Now it's spread throughout the other sub-forums, if at all.

Any ideas?

a) shut up, Foolmewunz...
b) maybe a tagger could help out when they notice a new thread that refers to something out of SWIFT and ask the mod team to move it here
c) ditto b) for mods/admins (they have nothing else to do, I'm sure :spjimlad: )

Seriously, the SWIFT commentary, especially with the new format, must be of interest. Was the hyper-active old Latest Commentary section all just due to a few people with axes to grind against Randi. I know there were a few such posts/threads, but there were others, too.

I used to like to check the Commentary once a week, when I knew it would be updated. Now it's like a blog where updates can be done at any time. It was easier to comment on a weekly column than to bother with commenting on a blog.

I think most people are using the comments system built in to the new format.

However, I see no reason why this subforum can't be revived. If someone (such as yourself foollmewunz) would take it upon themselves to start interesting dialog about the articles, people will follow.

I think I might, actually. I don't know why I just assumed other people should be starting threads on the topics. (The built-in comments are okay, but they generally tend to run to a half-page - or at least they are that at most when I read the articles.)

e.g. today's article... there are about fourteen ways to approach that horrific pollyanna-ish review/article that Time did.

(I don't think, though, that I'll take to monitoring others' threads and getting them to move them. Maybe if it's more active in this section, others will follow.)

@Alfaniner - good point... I used to wait for Friday mornings over here to read the weekly version, also. I actually prefer the daily article format, but I can see how a concentration of readers over a couple of days might spur more comments/threads.

It's pretty simple. The Sub Forum was closed because people got tired of my posting all my tired old sea stories there. "Oh, lord, JimBenArm with another boring story about life on the Usta-Fish. Give me a gun, let me end it now!" So many bodies were piling up that the admins had to take action to keep the membership alive.
Anyway, since I have your attention, I remember this time back in '78 when I was on WestPac. We pulled into this port and

Hey, hands off! No need to get physical! I'm leaving, okay? Quit shoving!

@Damien,
Of course as soon as I started this thread, the next couple of articles didn't get my muse all excited, so I'll just wait until the next thing comes along that piques my interest. I do intend to start a few threads here to see if we can bring it back to life - otherwise they might just kill it off as so many items wind up in GS&P or in JREF.
