    When we moved to Xenfora some of the signature options didn't come over. In the old software signatures were limited by a character limit, on Xenfora there are more options and there is a character number and number of lines limit. I've set maximum number of lines to 4 and unlimited characters.

I would also like to know why Randi dissassociated himself from CSICOP, because I have people claiming that he was dropped by CSICOP because of this pedophilia thing.
I know that Randi's relationship with csicop might be a bit complex and long, but to anyone who knows it well, or knows someone who knows what happened, please reply.

Randi stopped being associated with CSICOP basically because CSICOP made a resolution to stop hassling Uri Geller because of Gellers endless litigationary tendencies. Randi could not agree with that resolution, and so resigned his membership.

ETA: I believe Randi tells the story in this episode of The Amazing Show, but you'd better listen to it to be sure. :)

I read the accusations, I think Randi can sue the website, the poster, and the owner of the wesite for slander and character assassination. That is a very terrible thing to put up on any website.

Randi is on the Scientific Advisory Board of the False Memory Syndrome Foundation,

the most important word being: False, as in the accusations against him were false.

That Foundation is pretty fussy about whom they chose to include on their Advisory Board so I'll assume they know he is not only extraordinarily intelligent and respected but that he is also innocent of those disgusting accusations.
 
I think this thing will continue to rear its head as long as cherry-picking quotes and vitriolic bloggers still exist. Last major run at this I saw was from that beacon of sanity and fairness, Eric Huffschmid, sometime in early '08 (coincidentally near the time of the thread referenced in the OP).

HGM, the poorly nuanced reference to Randi leaving CSICOP was indirectly related to the counter-accusations of paedophilia. CSICOP just didn't want the continued hassle of the lawyering.

The counter-accusations of paedophilia are rather well-known, and I won't go into them, but here's the first thread I could find with some explanations.

Note: I reported this current thread, much on the same basis as my objection above, e.g. that it's poor taste to come into someone's living room and repeat accusations about your host. Ergo, if Randi or Jeff or Phil had wanted it taken down (or the one I linked to above, from February), it would have been consigned to the trash heap already. I think the fact that they haven't done so speaks legions as to their confidence that this is a crock of pooh-pooh.

So, have at it if you want... but know that this has all been done before and a little googling will find you as much material as you could desire. (I found a hundred references to the case and the various woo poison pen bloggers with a simple google of "False Memory Syndrome Foundation & James Randi", including links back to the a.m. thread from February.)

@Roma - the FMSF has been steeped in controversy for years. The unfortunate thing is that the smarmier side of it has overshadowed the more important question. Is there any such syndrome? (Oh, I believe false memories exist - but I don't think there's a syndrome that can be pinpointed.)

While reporting the thread is reasonable, I for one appreciate hearing about this. This is the first I've heard about the pedi thing. I do believe I had heard about the litigious Uri thing.

Anyway, we post a lot in this forum debunking stuff. This is just one more thing that deserves debunking. It's nice to be forewarned in case it comes up in some future discussion.


BTW, Godlike Productions is a pretty hilarious forum sometimes, like when they post stuff like this.

Well after skimming through a number of issues of a now out of 'print' zine called, "Saucer Smear", I got a glimmer of what this was all about. Amidst suing back and forth over the years between Randi another person similar to Geller, a recording was released where
Randi claims that he made this tape under the direction of the police chief of Rumson, New Jersey, to entrap harassing obscene callers.

The tape was portrayed as being something else.

I can believe Randi's version. I've had a man call my business and pretend to ask about a medical problem which really turned out was a ruse for an obscene call. The police came out and tracked the number down (I had captured it with a phone code even though it didn't show up on caller ID.) Anyway, the police called him back (from my phone with me there) and while they only gave him a warning, the police nonetheless went further than I thought they would have. I can see them recording a repeat caller using the person the abuser was calling to record the offense. And it's certainly not a stretch that Randi would be getting harassing calls.

From the date of the zine the tape was discussed in, this event was over a decade ago.
