While USAia was declared measles free in 2000 the current outbreak has seen more than six hundred cases, most of them ~80%) in Texas. Sixty people have been hospitalised and two children and one adult have died, so far.
And the disease is spreading, Kansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico have clusters that originated in Texas, while the outbreak in Ohio has also been linked.

This is probably only the beginning. Thanks to the Trump/Republican backing of anti-vaccination lies, the defunding of local, national and international health programmes several experts (notably Thomas Frieden, former CDC director) have stated that such outbreak are likely to become more common and severe.

Anti-vaccination whackjob and Trumpette health secretary RFK drops in on the
funeral of a child killed by measles and imposes his nonsensical views on everyone, praising two quack "healers", one of whom was previously censured by the state’s medical board for "unusual use of risk-filled medications".

He'll never learn!
Robert F Kennedy Jr claims anti-vax physicians healed ‘some 300 measles-stricken children (TheGuardian, April 7, 2025)
Robert F Kennedy Jr followed up his attendance at the Texas funeral of a child who died from measles by praising two unconventional “healers”, one of whom was previously disciplined by the state’s medical board for “unusual use of risk-filled medications”.
The US health secretary continued to send mixed messaging over the weekend about the measles outbreak that has now claimed at least three lives, including that of two children – first touting the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine as effective, then extolling the practitioners who have eschewed it in favor of vitamins and cod liver oil.

If we can get people as worked up over Big Snake-Oil as they are over Big Pharma we might see progress.
Snake oil can always position themselves as the underdog because they're subject to scrutiny from The Man

And the opposite is true. Supplements in the US are not regulated the same as pharmaceuticals. Anyone can throw up a shingle and start making and selling vitamins, and various protein powders, and whatever else you find in those isles with little to no oversite from Uncle Sam, and even most state authorities. And yet they frame themselves as oppressed even while making $211.68 billion (projected) this year.

This problem also exists in Australia.

I was surprised to find out that having measles wipes out most if not all of your previous vaccinations and immunity to various diseases. That's... scary.

Around 750 cases now. 97% unvaccinated. 80 hospitalised. Most infected are minors.

Ironically it was ex doctor Wakefield who started the entire anti immunisation thing (since struck off lol), and he fled from the UK and now lives in- you guessed it... Texas.....

Rather funny in a grim sort of way...

To be fair, he didn't start it, anti-vax has been a thing as long as there have been vaccinations. Mostly all the same rhetoric even. Wakefield just gave it some steriods. Somewhat ironically in that he did the thing a lot of anti-vaxers claim big pharma does by faking the whole autism link in order to sell his on vaccines.

Not feeling fair concerning Andrew ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ Wakefield.

Actually, to be momentarily serious, about 1% of those infected had both recommended doses.
Given vaccines are usually not 100% effective (about 93% for measles vaccine), a 1% infection rate is actually a very positive outcome.

But of course, for MAGA, if it isn't 100% then it must therefore be zero percent.

I'm most stunned that there are some Americans (according to repostings from social media) that believe that measles is like 'a mild cold'.

Yeah, it's so stunning that I have a hard time believing it's true.

On the other hand, it wouldn't stun me at all if most of Gen Z and Gen Alpha had no idea how bad measles is.

But it does intrigue me that anyone on this forum would cite "social media repostings" with anything other than derision normally accorded to National Enquirer headlines.

Here you go, here's a bit that's been collated by survey.
Republicans are far more skeptical of vaccines and twice as likely (1 in 5) as Democrats (1 in 10) to believe the measles shot is worse than the disease, according to the survey of 1,380 U.S. adults.

20% of surveyed Republicans and
10% of surveyed Democrats

believe that the measles vaccine is worse than than the disease.

I'm stunned that either of those numbers is greater than 1%, in fact, I would have guessed that it would be 0.1%

Haha oh wow. An ad-driven social media presence that doesn't even link to the survey in question? Why are you even subscribed to these clowns?

It was right there at the top of the page.

And I'm not subscribed to anything.

Are you OK?

Don't know why, nobody in the US has had the measles in like 40 years. I have no idea how bad it is. That's one of the reasons anti-vax is sustainable, they are so effective we just don't remember how many kids died of diseases we now prevent.

They are about to find out.

Then they will screech " Why weren't we told?!"

Followed by "Surely something can be done to stop this!"

About to???
They already are...
(funny how all the cases seem to be in 'red' states...)

And with RFK Jnr in charge- they won't be told (officially) and they sure as hell won't do anything about it...

Us Aussies are dumbfounded...

Not only in the US. There have been recent outbreaks in various European countries, mostly fuelled by anti vax propaganda and ignorance of the potential severe consequences of measles.
I've had several conversations with parents who clearly have no idea at all about the dangers, severity, or even the severe inconfort their children can be put through by contracting easily preventable diseases. The worst case was a lady who was totally ignorant of the risks and legality of tetanus …

Yes, RFK was basically bragging that the US was doing way better than Europe, neglecting to point out that the most serious outbreaks are in parts of Eastern Europe where anti-vaxx sentiment is rife.

US + Canada (!) measles epidemic

The vast majority of people infected in the Ontario measles outbreak are unvaccinated.

The vast majority of people infected in the Ontario measles outbreak are unvaccinated. Why is this so when you're required to be vaccinated to attend school? (Perplexity.ai)

Notice the relatively high percentage of breakthrough infections in fully vaccinated 20-to-39-year-olds.
I don't know what the cause it, but ...
COVID-19 leads to long-term changes in the immune system, study shows (NewsMedical, July 15, 2024)
For COVID-19 convalescent subjects, this means that their immune system may no longer be responding optimally to new challenges.

I don't know for Canada but in France and Switzerland some physicians, mostly those sympathetic to homeopathy and other pseudo medicines, will sign false vaccination certificates.

We have a major outbreak here in Ontario. Triggered by some people visiting from outside the province and a few pockets of the vaccinated. It appears that the government has been a bit lax in enforcing the requirement that a kid must be vaccinated to attend school (exemptions for the foolish and foolishly religious). Vaccine take up will probably finally put an end to the problem.

I have not heard reports of any homeoquacks being involved.
