When we moved to Xenfora some of the signature options didn't come over. In the old software signatures were limited by a character limit, on Xenfora there are more options and there is a character number and number of lines limit. I've set maximum number of lines to 4 and unlimited characters.

Having been a longtime critic of the advertising on JREF, I think it's only reasonable to pass on some kudos to the organisation for getting it right at long last.

Over the last year, the ad content has moved towards ads for rational products and in recent times, the near-complete absence of crap has resulted in a multitude of public service ads showing on the forum pages.

The style and content are completely in keeping with the nature of the forum.

:bigclap

I don't get any ads when I'm on the forum because I'm always logged in.

But I know what you mean. The software that tries to match ads with keywords often backfires. On my atheist meetup site, there's almost always completely inappropriate religious ads.

Ads? I guess I signed up right off or something, or maybe my Firefox ABP killed them even unregistered.

This is not a dis! I just had no idea there are or were ads on this forum. Then again my ability to ignore ads is pretty high lol

They only show up if you aren't signed in.

While I appreciate the kudos, the ads are solely chosen by our provider. I have attempted to optimize them as much as possible, but I still have very little control.

In that case, you should be giving the provider a huge pat on the back.

Clearly, someone has taken note of the type of ads which are suitable for the forum and has managed to implement a system where the vast majority of ads are public service organisations entirely in keeping with the goals of JREF.

The ads I get are for weight loss and teeth whitening. :)

You have exercised your control very well. You are too modest. It was not the provider that did this, but you.

I would like to see them prohibit ads with mouseover events like expanding when your mouse crosses the ad on the way to do something else.

What happened to the ads on the forum? I thought they were an unobtrusive way of gathering revenue for the JREF, and clicked on them at times when they seemed interesting, so the money would keep supporting the foundation.

I've found the ads to be really intrusive lately. In the last few weeks I've gotten ads with sounds, ads that drop down over the page and require you to close them to view the page, and ads that expand when your curser rolls over them. I don't think anyone has been minding the store lately.

Or your machine is infected with malware. I've experienced none of this.

Until I read this thread, I didn't realize (or didn't remember) that you got ads when not logged in. I use AdBlock on some sites, but this is one of the ones that I have excluded--I don't mind seeing ads if they help support sites I enjoy (and if they're not too intrusive).

To avoid these intrusive ads, why don't you just sign in? You can always log off when you leave the forum if you don't want to leave the computer signed in.

Just logged on to JREF forums tonight, and got an ad for:

Live Psychic Readings! Log on Now!

*snort*

I haven't been coming back too much lately but just so you know I'm not crazy or anything. This add followed the page as I scrolled down.

Well, you obviously need to get out and get some strange. Just be thankful you got the Magnum ad, and not the Lifestyles "Snugger fit". ;)

I get ads for Scientology. Apparently I fit the profile. Maybe I should go have my engrams checked. You know young living is using that thing now too to sell perfumes.

No ads if you're logged in.

I'm curious as to why you guys prefer to browse the forum while logged out.

Thanks for helping me solve a puzzle. My laptop was down and I was using my roommate's. There was always an ad at the top of the page. I don't remember seeing an ad on mine. I also constantly had to sign back in. His laptop doesn't seem to let you stay logged on very long. It was annoying, but I never put the two together, until now. Thanks.

When you log in there is a small box. Ensure that box is ticked. It is marked stay logged on or something similar. However if it is not your computer ensure you log off when you have finished with the forum.

Appreciated, but frankly, I know how to stay logged in. It's the way he has it set up. Remembering to log off was not a problem, though. You read through a thread, then have to log in again. Pain in the ass. Maybe he doesn't keep cookies or something.
