Ex-MMA fighter Rhonda Rousey made a public apology for supporting Sandy Hook conspiracies years ago.

The apology comes on the heel of a Reddit AMA thread that turned into a disaster when that support was brought up. The AMA can be seen here:

But honestly I deserve to be hated, labeled, detested, resented and worse for it. I deserve to lose out on every opportunity, I should have been canceled, I would have deserved it. I still do.
I apologize that this came 11 years too late, but to those affected by the Sandy Hook massacre, from the bottom of my heart and depth of my soul I am so so sorry for the hurt I caused. I can’t even begin to imagine the pain you’ve endured and words cannot describe how thoroughly remorseful and ashamed I am of myself for contributing it.

I can say at least it’s not a nonpology.

I remember watching Rousey on The Ultimate Fighter. She came across as a truly nasty piece of trailer trash. That she buys- or bought- into nasty conspiracy theories like Sandy Hook denial does not come as much of a surprise to me.
I think her career is pretty much over anyway: in the comments on that Reddit they said that WWE has let her go. UFC ditched her years ago, and her acting "career" was a flash in the pan too. I won't be shedding any tears.

i think there's a strong correlation between conspiratorial beliefs and brain damage

anyway, pretty tough for fighters to have any kind of longevity. really short time for most of them to be on top, and nobody cares if you're not fighting and winning. pretty tough to turn that into something else. and when they do you get somebody like the rock who they try and jam his face into every god damn thing which sucks even worse. it's influencer culture, it's awful

I think she only gets partial credit for the apology. She didn't feel the need to say anything before le reddit army blasted her. Heartfelt apologies shouldn't be forced out of you after the fact when given no other options.

It's an entirely unreserved apology with no weasel words, excuses or attempts to divert the blame elsewhere and she acknowledges the pain she's caused. Still, anyone who doesn't feel any apology would be enough is well within their rights, and arguably justified, to feel that way.

This is where I'm at, though I don't know much about the person

If she had mental illness or brain damage at the time then in my opinion she can be forgiven.

Having said that, I'm not a Sandy Hook Conspiracy victim. If I was, I might think differently.

I think what it comes down to is whether an apology has any value or not, if you think it does then she's made the apology that people should make, which is notable when we usually see public figures doubling down or "I'm sorry people feel that way but..." . I'd be interested to hear if any Sandy Hook survivors or victim's families have commented, their opinion is the only one that really matters here and if they're willing to accept her apology that would be good enough for me.

She "apologized" about as well as a tumble dryer full of broken rocks can polish a Fabrege Egg.

A sincere apology, that doesn't have to be wrenched out of you a decade+ after the fact while you're begging for handouts, surely has value.

if you think it does then she's made the apology that people should make,

Far too late to be taken as sincere and under relentless pressure from an AMA audience. Seriously, what else could she possibly have said?

In an unwarranted overabundance of generosity to her, her offense was to retweet a video with the word "interesting". She backed off right away with a brief apology. It's not like she was an outspoken endorser of the sicko theory.

But fans let her know on the AMA that the quicky apology was not enough. She posts a paragraph on Reddit with all the right sincere sounding words. Ok, better than nothing, I guess.

Did she take that open mic AMA opportunity to talk about it in more depth? Even respond to the avalanche of posts there? Nope. She gave a "Thanks for the cash to those of you who gave me some, I'm out this bitch" with no further ado.

She said what I would consider the absolute bare minimum that a panhandler would have to say if they were going to walk away with anything jingling in the tin pot.

The grieving parents might accept almost anything. They need closure, and to be able to stagger forward, not have salt rubbed in the wounds daily. Also, the apology wasn't directed to them. It was directed to a reddit audience of potential donors. To the best of my knowledge, this panhandler with a $14 million net worth hasn't sent so much as a sympathy card to the parents.

I don't know much about this but I would like to know more about the extent of her support for this conspiracy theory.

According to the Reddit thread:
Over a decade ago, you tweeted "I never meant to insult or hurt anyone, sorry if anyone was offended. It was not my intention in the least." after sharing a video that you called "must-watch" and "interesting" that had claimed the Sandy Hook School Massacre was part of a government conspiracy.

Is that it? Over a decade ago she shared a video on social media and called it "must-watch" and "interesting"? She didn't make said video. Apparently she fell for the lies in whatever video it was. I.e., she was deceived and spread some disinformation that she herself had fallen for. I detest people like Alex Jones who actually make up the lies that others like Rousey credulously swallow and spread, but I wouldn't put her on the same level as him. She believed it because of people like Jones who created the lies and spread them in the first place.

Her initial "apology" was a half-assed non-apology (I'm sorry if anyone was offended, that wasn't my intention, etc.) but her more recent one seems sincere.

Yeah, I agree with this.

The fact that she hasn't apologised earlier seems reasonable since she probably forgot all about having shared a video on social media a decade ago. Someone brings it up and she says, yeah, that was stupid. Seems reasonable to me.

As skeptics, it's easy to see the error of people who fall for this **** and think the worst of them, but most people lack the tools to critically examine these conspiracy theories. I can still hold people accountable for becoming strong spokespersons for stuff like this, as I think there's a responsibility to actually do your homework before you start strongly endorsing something, but just a single sharing of a video doesn't rise to that level for me.

Maybe I just know too many people who fall for this kind of ****.

My guess is that at the time she thought it was, as she said, "interesting", but being a bit on the self absorbed side, she didn't get how these were real parents grieving for their murdered children. I'm willing to give her a pass on that. Some people are more empathetic than others and all.

I just don't think the long form AMA apology means much at all. She wanted handouts, and dropped that mic when she bled it for what she could. If she took a few lousy reddit posts to talk a little about it and show something more personal than reading off a PR prompt, it would be a different takeaway. Even now, she's back to mute. She hustled what cash she could milk out of the reddit audience and it's swept aside yet again.

Yeah, that sounds right to me.
