I wrote about this last year, and I'll mention it again: http://www.internationalskeptics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=125806

The Combined Federal Campaign is a way for US Government workers to contribute money to various groups/charities that they want to right from their checks. In other words, the US Government does the collecting and disbursing.

Once again there were probably 1,000 or more organizations listed, and once again the James Randi Educational Foundation was not one of those listed.

This is something the JREF should look into, there has got to be at least a few other Government workers besides Skinny and I who wouldn't mind slipping the JREF a couple of hundred dollars a year this way, and all the groups listed get to split any money not designated for any particualr group.

And here is the listing of some of the groups that I could have contributed to (and other government workers may be contributing to):

Focus on the Family
Moody Bible Insitute
Promise Keepers
Billy Graham Evangelistic Association
Jews for Jesus
Institute for Creation Research
Answers in Genesis
PETA
Greenpeace
Herbal Medicine Institue (American Botanical Council)
The National Foundation for Alternative Medicine
The Heritage Foundation

and my own personal favorite (I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP!!):

Christian Bowhunters of America :eye-poppi

It may be that the Government paperwork is too onerous or that the information the US Government wants every year is more trouble than the possible income the JREF may receive. But if the Christian Bowhunters of America can get listed, why not the JREF?

For the record, Doctors without Borders, Amnesty International, World Wildlife Fund, Freedom From Religion, and the Civil War Preservation Trust are all get about $100 next year from me.

Just wish it was the JREF.

Imagining people educating the world about "woo woo" probably makes the list compilers laugh more than "Christian bowhunters".

That could be one of the reasons.

I'm pretty sure you just have to make sure you qualify as a non-profit and don't have any black marks on your copy book as to discriminatory practices, etc... Employees of the federal government are every strip and color of woo, non-woo, religion, anti-religion, etc... I don't think there's a death panel that says, OMG this group doesn't believe in the Pledge of Allegiance - no goodies for them. It's contributions - not grants.

I think it's a good idea, Hutch. Have you forwarded this directly to Jeff, Linda, et al? Seems like a lovely project for one of those high-energy young apprentice types. It'd be good to know if it was viable, at least.

I work for a rather large company (not quite as big as the US government but still...). We are currently in the middle of our yearly United way campaign. If you don't like the UW you can select other charities through easymatch.com. I did not see the JREF on that list either, and I did see some organizations that "did not meet the requirements" of my company.

That’s especially insulting because I’ve looked CBA up before and they’re a bunch of blowhards, and lousy archers on top of that. The money would have at least been better wasted on a proper bowhunters’ org like the Pope And Young Club.
