When we moved to Xenfora some of the signature options didn't come over. In the old software signatures were limited by a character limit, on Xenfora there are more options and there is a character number and number of lines limit. I've set maximum number of lines to 4 and unlimited characters.

Merged A Thread for AlexPontik to Explain his Ideas

What is the purpose of money?/What money does, who is good at making it, and who is a Hi all, I have the following argument regarding the purpose of money, does it seem correct to you, or am I wrong in my reasoning? All feedback welcome, but please, keep it classy.:D What is the purpose of...

    Questions about time

The concept of time. I'm thoroughly confused by it. I don't claim to know much about it at all, and it's a concept I cannot get my head around. I've read about time dilation, different dimensions, and other physics related topics and while I can sort of grasp them, there comes a point where I...

The Missing Chapter Of General Relativity?

I suggest that in pure empty space, devoid of mass or gravity, that the Flow of Time is infinite. Time stops at the speed of light, it will nearly stop for a mass traveling very close to the speed of light. When a gravitational field strength decreases, time flow increases. It has always been...

    Slowing Light Equals Slowing Time?

http://www.technologyreview.com/blog/arxiv/26992/ I am really confused by the above article. From a brief read through, they're saying that by slowing down light and then speeding it back up, we can effectively hide something in time for about 110 nanoseconds. Is this correct? Does that mean...

"Time is Not the Fourth Dimension"

"The concept of time as a way to measure the duration of events is not only deeply intuitive, it also plays an important role in our mathematical descriptions of physical systems. For instance, we define an object’s speed as its displacement per a given time. But some researchers theorize that...

    Why is there a "now"?

This is perhaps related to the "hard problem of consciousness" in another forum, but I come to it from science, rather than philosophy. (Actually, it was long ago article in Scientific American which brought this to my attention). And that thread is very long and convoluted, and often quite...

    Can causality exist without time?

A question for those who know a lot more about physics, cosmology and philosophy than I do. I'm engaged in a discussion on another forum, and the topic has drifted to the idea of causality. My erstwhile opponent (who is a religious moderate with fundamental leanings, if that makes any sense -...

    "How to stop time"

Hi everyone. This is my first post, although I have been reading certain threads every now and then - and even though I am not an active skeptic when it comes to organizations et cetera, I try to follow the skeptic world as closely as I can and would consider myself skeptic by heart. Anyway...

    Is time an illusion?

One more thread for the road. Dang, I'm on a roll today. So. As far as we know, matter and energy can't just appear out of nowhere and nothing. Where, then, did the universe come from? Answer: It always existed, for an eternity in the reverse direction of time. Removed hotlinked image...

    Time - continuous or quanta?

I was just wondering whether time is a sort of Heraclitian 'continuous flux' or whether it's quantised into distinct units. I realise these may be the wrong terms to use. Basically, is there a generally accepted physical view of time which deals with this old distinction?

    Two Questions about Black Holes

Question One - Various answers have been given, as to why Gravity is able to excape from a black hole - but none have addressed the fact that gravity has now been shown to travel at speed c. Question Two At speed c, time has dilated to zero - Therefore, from light's frame of reference...
