Moderated Donald Sterling, Owner of the Clippers, is Racist

You keep saying this, but I presume you have a job and an employer? Why don't you try calling their best customer and saying disgusting things about their mother and let us know how it goes. I would expect that the private business that is the NBA can choose to cut ties with anyone they like, at will, no?
Apples and oranges. Let's make it a little more similar. I call my girlfriend and complain about her homophobic behavior. She posts it on a Christian website that my boss sees. He fires me because he also is homophobic. Legal? Legitimate? Justified? You tell me.

Not nearly the same thing. Sterling was recorded talking to his girlfriend. He said these things to someone he thought he could trust, he probably never imagined it would come out.

No one would have heard his offensive statemented if it hadn't been made public.

If you want to use your analogy. Imagine you talking to your buddy in your house saying that a customer was being a right ******** today and without you knowing your buddy records it and sticks it on the internet.

Would you feel it was fair to be fired ?

This seems mental to me. My thoughts.

He's racist. This isn't a surprise to anyone who follows the NBA. Really though, who cares ? He's an old billionaire, if he doesn't like black people why does it matter ?

His comments were recorded without his knowledge, this just isn't fair is it ? He thought he was making these comments in private, it's only offended people because someone recorded it and made it public! Why is this Sterlings fault that it ended up public ? I'm sure we all say things in private to people we think we can trust that would sound horrible outside of your group.

How racist can you be when you're paying your star player, a black man, over $100m in the next 5 years.

I knew as soon as the recording came out that this was going to blow up. Is it wrong that I wanted the Clippers to win the championship more than almost anything just to see the outrage as the league handed a championship trophy to this horrible old racist. It would have been amazing! The outrage! I don't even like the Clippers.

Near as I can tell Sterling has never been a political player. So why should I care what party affiliation he has?

It is certainly a Victory of a man's "little head" overtaking his "big head" initiating his own destruction. A struggle and battle that goes back to Adam in the garden of Eden. He is not the first man to have this downfall and won't be the last.
It's a Victory for Stupidity too. She managed to kill the Goose that laid the Golden Egg. She can now return to where she came from to practice her profession anyway she wants. For sure, it's her last picture with Magic and celebs who I am sure have already rapidly put her out of their lives - It's over for her too. "get the Bentley too".
And the scorned wife can say "Told you So". This has been a hoot.
G-d save us from becoming fools.
She must be burning a thousand candles an hour. praying she is pregnant.

Mother Jones and a lib reporter??? Sticking with the Conservative Tree House.

Odd double standard you have, but all right, let's take this slowly.

1. Conservative Treehouse told you (and you credulously echoed it for them) that Sterling is a Democratic fundraiser.

Please go to their cited source for this and find me the evidence there to support this claim.

[HINT: their source says nothing of the sort. CTH deceived you and you fell for it.]

2. Conservative Treehouse told you (and you credulously echoed it for them) that Sterling is a Democratic contributor. (Not "was" a contributor more than a decade ago; "is").

Please go to their cited source for this and find me evidence there of any contributions Sterling has made to the Democratic Party, Democratic Party support groups, or Democratic Party candidates in the past 5 years.

[HINT: their source does not list any. CTH deceived you and you fell for it.]

3. Okay, I hope we've established that CTH is not reliable in backing up claims they actually make. So now let's move on to the claim that Sterling is a Democrat.

Please go to the CTH article and find me any place in it where they claim that Sterling is a registered member of the Democratic Party.

[HINT: they didn't say it. They simply worded the piece in a way to get credulous marks heated up and ready to echo and amplify their charges. If the marks got a little carried away and said things which weren't true -- well, that's not CTH's problem]

How bout a picture of that registration card?

All right, here you go:
picture.php

Hmmm, that looks a little small. (Also, I marked off Sterling's house number before realizing it's widely available at the many places posting pics of his voter registration.)

If you can't read the image I posted, you can find a copy online here.

If you don't espouse racist views at all, it matters not who recorded them. He was brought down by his continued racist remarks. While actually being a registered republican. Gives money to dems and repubs, along with other small donations to many causes and charities. As rich as he is, he needs all the tax breaks he can get.

He's still a ranting racist and finally, it's too much to gloss over. I feel sorry for the players if they lose jobs over this. OTOH, they knew he was this way when they went to work for him.

Outstanding post per usual. I'd have added this, to help ABC10 better understand the error of his/her ways...

... but that's because I'm a wise ass.

In both Sterling's case and the hypotheticals above, the issue would be with the person who made the offensive comments public. Not an unjust employer, and certainly not some imaginary "thought police".

What Sterling did clearly violates a clause in his contract with the NBA, and Silver is well within his rights to do what he did. He bears no responsibility for how the information became public, and he was duty-bound to act on it once it did.

If Sterling takes issue with the actions of the NBA, the courts are always at his disposal.

Near as I can tell Sterling has never been a political player. So why should I care what party affiliation he has?

It was only an issue right up to the point where the people who were making it an issue found out he was a Republican.

The fact that Sterling is a registered Republican has now been verified by numerous sources which took the time (unlike Conservative Treehouse, National Review Online, or ABC10) to actually look the information up.

But here's the original source -- the one who inspired Mother Jones and others to look this up and verify his information -- LA Times columnist Michael Hiltzik:

The Donald Sterling controversy had much of the right wing vibrating this weekend with the revelation that the purported arch-racist Sterling was (gasp!) a Democrat. This shed little light on the Sterling affair, other than to underscore the ancient truism that some public scandals are so explosive that for at least a period of time one can write or say anything one wishes about them without fear of contradiction.

Cue, for example, the National Review, whose headline read: "Racist Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Has Only Contributed to Democrats."

Nice try, National Review. Here's the truth: Sterling is a registered Republican and has been at least since 1998. As I divulged via Twitter on Sunday night, that information comes from the official database of California voter registrations. A readout of Sterling's registration record is here, collated to the Clipper owner's official residence in Beverly Hills and his documented birth date, April 26, 1934. (Yes, he turned 80 on Saturday.)

After I tweeted this fact on Sunday, scads of conservatives tweeted their doubts, pointing out that the voter database is not public, so why should they believe it? Actually, the registration database is public --you just have to know a lot about the subject to obtain his or her party registration.

So doubters are welcome to check the official Los Angeles county registrar's website, here. Plug in Sterling's name, house number (808), zip code (90210) and birth date from our readout (or track them down yourself) and have fun...

Near as I can tell Sterling has never been a political player. So why should I care what party affiliation he has?
No reason you should (except for the caveat that follows). He's a vile racist no matter his political affiliation.

The caveat: The right wing echo chamber jumped all over Sterling's supposed Democratic affiliation, spewing falsehoods hither and yon. (Playing what I call the race-card card.) These falsehoods are swallowed as fact by gullible ideologues -- hook, line, and sinker. The only reason you might care about Sterling's affiliation is for the purpose of rebutting these falsehoods.

One more quick post before I get back to the work I should be doing right now.

My first post in this thread was addressed to the question of whether Democrats would attack or defend Sterling (back when it was being loudly asserted that Sterling was a Democrat).

Some here thought that Democrats would circle the wagons and defend Sterling. I linked to a diary at DailyKos -- one written by a front-pager, i.e. by someone who speaks for the site as opposed to someone who simply posts there. Both the diary and the comments were strongly critical of Sterling. Unlike the way some on the right have attempted to defend Cliven Bundy's recent racist remarks, there was no attempt by Daily Kos folks to defend Sterling. (Nor am I aware of any other liberal, progressive, or Democratic Party site which attempted to defend Sterling during the period when many thought that Sterling was some big-deal Democrat.)

There have been more than 30 diaries about Donald Sterling posted at Daily Kos since this story broke. I invite anyone who thinks Democratic Party supporters would hesitate to criticize a Democrat who turned out to be a racist to peruse these diaries and see what they find.

In both Sterling's case and the hypotheticals above, the issue would be with the person who made the offensive comments public.
What "issue" do you refer to?

What Sterling did clearly violates a clause in his contract with the NBA, and Silver is well within his rights to do what he did.
Please cite the exact clause he is in violation of.

He bears no responsibility for how the information became public, and he was duty-bound to act on it once it did.
Who defines that duty that he is bound to act upon, and please cite that duty.

If Sterling takes issue with the actions of the NBA, the courts are always at his disposal.
I was fired for reprimanding my girlfriend for her homophobic behavior. Guess my only recourse is to take the issue to court. If I lose there, then I just must be wrong since whatever the law/courts say is right, must be morally/ethically justified.

No, that's incorrect.

Well, who could possibly argue with such a cogent analysis?

That you've created this "trump card" is of course substantiated by your own posts. Its universal application is self-evident.

Of course! It's simply self-evident. How could I not see the "obvious" argument? After all, it was right there in front of my eyes the whole time.

You've decided to ignore the obvious meaning of what Lott said and assign some more esoteric meaning to it, or just write it off as "nonsensical". This is a cheat that can be used whenever it suits you.

Yes, there's that "obvious" argument again. Of course, to somebody who was younger than, say, 65 years old in 2002, and learned about as much political history as most students do in school, the Dixiecrat Party and their platform in 1948 might be considered somewhat esoteric. For those people, the "obvious" interpretation may have been that Lott was implying Thurmond was a good man and a strong leader, and that those qualities would have served him well as President.

Or...
As for Joe Biden, the most damning interpretation is that he actually thought the bombing was a good thing in the end because it allowed the victims to show how strong they were and to set an example for the nation.
... when it doesn't.

Wait a minute. That quote looks a little funny to me. Could there be more to it? Why, yes there is:

As for Joe Biden, the most damning interpretation is that he actually thought the bombing was a good thing in the end because it allowed the victims to show how strong they were and to set an example for the nation. I think rather he was so overwhelmed by admiration for the survivors that he just ended up saying something nonsensical. His actual words, however, were neither vague nor ambiguous. I chalk it up to Joe Biden being Joe Biden. I didn't call for his resignation or anything. Of course, I still don't think he's competent enough to run a car wash, let alone be a heartbeat away from the Presidency, but I've thought that for at least 6 years.

I have highlighted the important bit. I'm sure your obvious attempt to twist the obvious meaning of my words was accidental. Obviously.

What "issue" do you refer to?

Please cite the exact clause he is in violation of.

Who defines that duty that he is bound to act upon, and please cite that duty.

I was fired for reprimanding my girlfriend for her homophobic behavior. Guess my only recourse is to take the issue to court. If I lose there, then I just must be wrong since whatever the law/courts say is right, must be morally/ethically justified.

Getting deseperate, are we?
I am pretty sure that the contract that Sterling signed when he bouth the Clippers included a binding agreement to be governed by the NBA's rules, which probably includes a clause about punishement for an owner for bad behavior, sort of a "morlals Clause".
Point is that Striling has embarassed the NBA by his actions, and in a industry that is dependent on image as professional spots is, that is enough for his fellow owners to throw him under the bus, and I am betting the agreement he signed when he joined the NBA as an owner will give the NBA the fight to punich him.
I find it ineresting that you are so passionate about defending bigotry.

It was only an issue right up to the point where the people who were making it an issue found out he was a Republican.
We don't know yet cause we ain't seen any paper work. Even Big Ed Schultz quoted Mother Jones. Let's see the card. And be sure we got the right Donald Tokovich Sterling.

I don't care about basketball, the NBA, or Sterling.
Er, ok.

Notwithstanding, if you wish to think critically, and if you wish your posts to be factual, I suggest not parroting unreliable, agenda-driven sources that echo other unreliable, agenda-driven sources, and so on.
