Sure, but if us lowly human beings are to make the connection between action and punishment, the punishment needs to follow the action within a reasonable time frame. Too much later on and we're apt to have no idea what we're being punished for.

Just blame all punishments on "teh gay". That way you don't have to worry that it's something YOU did. Unless you're gay of course.
