I hope this is not some other thing to have escaped my notice until now....

But Rudy Guede has FINALLY been convicted of theft in the breakins, which he did prior to his break-in to Meredith's cottage in Nov 2007.

The Milan court has sentenced Guede for the theft of a laptop and cellphones from the Milan lawyer's office in Oct 2007, in the days before he broke in to murder Meredith Kercher.

Ah, Bill that would be from the lawyers' office in PERUGIA.

Yes, that's why I blocked out the thought - that he would have learned the address of the law firm during questioning in Milan. But then there should be notes of interview (or a tape) and that would be interesting and, in a reasonable legal system, discoverable in Amanda's and Raffaele's case. So why haven't we seen it or heard anything about it?

Too bad it's so late at night there. I almost had coffee coming out of my nose at the idea that would be notes or a recording of the interview...I mean with the budget issues and all.

Could the reason why they convicted him now is that they are afraid to release him? At least this might give them a year or two more?

How does their osmosis work with this now being accepted as a fact? The law office break in was through a second story window, just like the cottage. I notice the dates in the article are all wrong. It says the thefts occurred on October 27th. The Laptop was actually stolen two weeks before that. October 27th was when Rudy was caught in the nursery in Milan with the laptop. Must be why he was charged and convicted in Milan.

But talk about the wheels of justice being slow.

google translation of a link about Guede

Google translation: Rudy Hermann Guede already sentenced to 20 years for the murder of Meredith Kercher occurred in Perugia , came a conviction for theft. This was decided by the Third Court of Appeal of Milan which found the defendant guilty of a couple of thefts October 27, 2007 in Milan. Accepting the request of the Attorney General Gianni Griguolo , the panel of judges has set sentencing for 1 year and 4 months.

The sentence for having fenced at a laptop and a cell phone stolen results in a lawyer's office in Perugia. The appellate courts of Milan have thus confirmed the decision of first instance . In Milan Guede was caught in an asylum on October 27, 2007 that before the murder of British student . In the backpack he was carrying agents found the PC and mobile phone.

" Guede , who was not at the hearing today , has always claimed to have bought them at a flea market ," said Ansa his lawyer , the lawyer Nicodemo Gentile . "Our assisted - added the lawyer - has never been accused of the theft of the two objects . It is unwise to more than one purchase. Will appeal to the Supreme Court against the conviction . " For the lawyer the judgment Dear Milan will not stretch , however, the period within which Guede , held in Viterbo , request permission to leave early from prison. Possibility provided for the Ivorian in the coming months.

What's TJMK saying?

Now Prosecutor Gianbartolomei has issued his announcement of the conclusion of his investigation. The content of the notice is at present confidential except to the defenses.

As Yummi reports, from this point on, the defense has 20 days to say something, such as to request that Sollecito be interrogated or allowed to declare or explain something.

Then the prosecution will file charges against Sollecito and Gumbel,

Pete loves this stuff.

Tesla - the conviction is not for burglary but for receiving stolen goods. Even I agree that is the right charge in the absence of proof he committed the burglary. They would need his prints from the law office or an eye witness (Toto was already fully booked for that night I expect) or something.

I wish I had a nickel for every time Pete said something like this. Why doesn't Machiavelli/Yummi come here and say something?

Why? Because on Apr 30 nothing will happen.

I seem to have missed something whilst distracted elsewhere. Was Guede convicted of theft separately from the Kercher case? I missed that completely.

Yes well apparently the whole world and every news organization in it missed it too. How is it possible to keep this stuff secret? A burglar convicted of murdering of a young foreign student is somehow convicted of burglary or fencing as it appears...7 years after the fact?

For me this seems like a concoction to remove the troubling questions left by the failure of the Milan and then the Perugia police....and courts. Someone is goose stepping over a mess to semi-show that ...no the rumors are not true...we investigated Guede and look now we charge and convict him.

But why only fencing stolen property? Where are the details of this case? The computer ID, the cell ID, was there a gold watch? But wait! Why no charges for breaking and entering a nursery school (that was robbed of thousands of Euros...ahummm...in the previous weeks) and not just breaking and entering, but theft from this place, and armed with a deadly weapon. Where are these notes...these details?

Did Guede have a jack knife in his pocket too? I bet he did. Where are the details? This is a sham presented by your local Italian corrupt officials. Otherwise it is preposterous. Sure they can make a case for possession with intent to deliver stolen property...but what about the frigging school break-in? What, Delgatto didn't press charges? Didn't sue for damages? Didn't have the bejesus scared out of her? Why has this "caught dead nuts" burglary not been prosecuted?

Something keeps stinking worse and worse as Italy once again attempts to prop up a certainty of foul official malfeasance masked as justice.

It is a "look it's a squirrel" act indeed!

There is a huge story hidden in this idiotic burglary or whatever case against Guede. This is a whitewash...

7 years?
Why fencing only?
Where are the case facts?
Where are the motivation reports?
Why was this kept secret from the world ...the press? (Its a huge related story).

They are not worried about letting Guede free...they are worried about getting caught treating him so specially as to cause suspicion and questions! Look we charged and convicted him! (look a squirrel!)

Watch?
Burned apartment (meal prep)
Nursery School caught! (meal prep)
Knife or knives?
Tramintello?
Purse snatcher?
Black? (just kidding...I put that in there for the race baiters)

Dumb and Dumber ...Italy plows steadfastly on into the crazy abyss.

7 years to get to second phase fencing charge? NO! nonono...

Well I guess Guede will be able to appeal to the ECHR about undue delay in the legal process and get the whole thing struck out. It seems extraordinary that 8 years on the court process is still rolling on. Remember the conviction is not confirmed until signed off by the ISC so whatever the result of the appeal we still have that. In any case my guess is he will be sentenced to time served.

Is Guede an Italian citizen? Most countries would deport a foreign citizen at the end of their sentence for a serious offence.

Does Italy have a sex offenders register? Will Guede be on this if so?

What's strange is that I find this ridiculous. I don't think Guede shouldn't have been able to get off with such a light sentence for murder. That said, I think his conviction for this crime 7 years after a minor burglary is absurd. If you take it out of context of the murder, I think most people would feel that way.

Why would he be registered when coerced by experienced offenders like Amanda and Raffaele;)

I think they may very well be trying to hold him for a few more years

The Italian report is clear that this will not alter his study release program, and why would anything else be expected. Poor Rudy, necrophiliac after other minor offences. This is beyond bizzare.

But poll also found that more than 84% of the students surveyed said they were aware of, and frightened by, the case of Amanda Knox and cited it as a reason why they would think twice before spending a semester in Italy.

I find this interesting, because it is oft said how irrelevant the Knox case is. I hope there is leverage available from this poll. I see no reason why open minded American students can not be mobilised to research and illuminate the case, and chip away at the badly educated.

Interesting article. I guess if a similar poll was held in the UK universities students concern would be what happened to Meredith Kercher.

Why?
What happened to Meredeth appears to be a random act of violence that can happen anywhere.
At the same time, what happened with Amanda appears to be a malevolent face saving measure by the Italian authorities.
