Continuation Part Eight: Discussion of the Amanda Knox/Raffaele Sollecito case

Thanks acbytesla. Grinder's reactions to things is sometimes bizarre, IMO. I'm not sure why ANYONE would want to ingratiate themselves to Feinstein, a minor league tabloid writer who stumbled upon, and blew the opportunity with, an inmate who once rubbed shoulders with Amanda Knox.

If I'd tried to cozy up to her, I chose a funny way of doing it... calling her in private PM and publicly, er, " a minor league tabloid journalist who perhaps blew the ONLY real scoop she'd ever get." She had access into the prison, and blew it, choosing instead to go for the slut-value to cause her readers to tut-tut about the smelly habits of an American; using nothing but the obvious bad relation Knox had with at least one other prisoner.

That's a story? That's something to want to cozy up to Feinstein for? It must have been the other Bill Williams.

In fact, the woman Feinstein wrote about also talked about the mean things she did to Knox. For some reason - gee, I wonder why? - that was only a passing reference in Feinstein's account. I managed to get out of Feinstein that a good portion of the "interviewing" done with the ex-inmate was not done by her at all.

It was no less than Barbie Nadeau who said that one of the problems with the coverage of this case in the first months (Nov-Dec 2007 and beyond) was that major news agencies didn't have the funds, so she said, to send top of the lines nbews people to cover the trial... so it fell to the Nick Pisas, Nick Squires, Barbie Nadeau's and Andrea Vogts of the world, not to mention John Follain. (That's not the way she put it, that's the way I put it....)

This whole thing was covered "tabloid style" esp. from the beginning. Everyone has tried to monetize it, and a part of me says, "why not?" That's what journalists do....

Feinstein was a late comer, but certainly fit the mould. She stumbled on a source in the prison to get some tut-tut-value out of it, and she even blew that.

To understand the background of this, it was that Egan fellow from the NYTimes who finally did go to try to cover this, and discovered the pressure these tabloid stringers were under. The UK Tabs particularly would pay on a story by story basis, and would simply buy the most lurid one; Egan talked with a foreign journalist in Perugia back then who confessed the whole gig; provide something lurid our one does not get paid. It was that simple.

I guess it's probably good that a journalist doesn't have a "public opinion" on these things, at least one that does not show through too badly through their coverage..... but Egan was shocked that the tab-journalists he talked with didn't even have a working understanding of the crime itself.

Much like the guilters who devour Twitter these days - they can't express an opinion about Time of Death, for instance.... but man o man can they say slutty things about Amanda Knox.

I guess there's not much to talk about until Nencini's motivations is published. I plead guilty to that.

I don't get why that article ever made the news, Bill. Heresay about Amanda from another prisoner who didn't like Amanda? Wow!!! This qualifies as news and a credible source in today's environment? That article is proof that the media will publish just abut anything to sell advertising. This qualifies as catty gossip and that is all.

Twitter only allows 140 characters per tweet. I'm only getting warmed up in 140 characters. Doesn't exactly allow people to discuss the evidence in any depth.

If it is Feinstein's you're mentioning, it didn't "make news". It was solely a talking point for those who obsessively blog about this on any of the sides. The hater sites regularly block anything by hate-talk... and Feinstein's blog became one of the few "meeting places" for the two sides.

It was there where I first heard about "sex on a train." I'd said that AFAIWC the break-in was a real break-in and that there'd been no clean-up, and someone responded with, "How does it feel to defend a little slut who had sex on a train?"

I am not sure what sex on a train has to do with a break in....

But the thing never "made news" outside of the narrow universe of about 6 websites.

Why do people seem to think that sex is so bad. Seem seem to want it to be dirty, something we need to hide. Why?

For Migninni it was all about character assassination in Amandas case, imo.
In general, possible Mignini has sex issues of his own, erection dysfiunction, or truly see's it as evil, you think?

All part of the Witch Hunt, framing, railroad job with leaking it to the media. I dont see any other reason for the leak.

A lot of what Sharon Feinstein wrote I'm sure was true. In fact, Amanda said as much in her book.
The warden said that Amanda never talked about Meredith or that night or Rudy Guede. That she was controlled.

And this is a bad thing? I think it demonstrates that Amanda didn't trust anyone in the prison at all except for a priest that Amanda knew would keep whatever she said between them. Keep in mind that Amanda had her journal stolen from her while she was at that jail and found it published in the tabloids And that Amanda was falsely told that she was HIV positive and wrote out a list of her sexual partners only to see this in the tabloids.

Amanda knew better than to talk about Meredith, Rudy or the case to anyone but her lawyers. Amanda doesn't dispute this at all.

I also found that the warden said that Amanda never took the sleeping pills that the prison pushed on them to help keep them under control. Amanda discussed this also in her book how the prison was always pushing sedatives to the prisoners to help them cope and Amanda wouldn't take them because she felt it was important to have a clear head. Actually I find this to be impressive. I imagine I would be the same way. I don't drink or take any drugs at all. I had surgery a few years back and I took the pain pills for exactly one day. I had 29 capsule of Vicodin left over and it wasn't until I hurt my back severely that I used any more of them. But I hate that foggy brain feeling.

The warden also said that "In four years she never got a bad report, she obeyed all the rules, like not turning up the TV, or hanging washing out the window. If all the prisoners behaved like Amanda , prison would function much better.
She also said Amanda spent all her time reading and studying. I think if it was me, I would do exactly the same thing."
One of the things I believe is that jealousy and envy played a huge role in the dynamics in prison. The other inmate talked about sharing and seemingly expected Amanda to share everything with her. My guess is that Amanda did receive special privileges and she did everything she could to live inside the books and her mind as opposed to the prison.

I also would imagine that Amanda suffered from the thought that she didn't belong in prison and a lot of the other prisoners did. These weren't the people that Amanda wanted to associate with. And if you read some of the comments that the other inmate said....basically trying to torture Amanda saying that Amanda should get use to it since she was going to be in prison for life. Who could blame Amanda for trying to stay seperate? I think Amanda felt she had to be strong and not show weakness to this other inmate or maybe any of the other inmates.

Why do people seem to think that sex is so bad. Seem seem to want it to be dirty, something we need to hide. Why?

It is to prudes DF. Personally, while I know that Amanda didn't have sex on a train, it wouldn't bother me for one second if she had. I have had friends that have bragged about joining the mile high club. I can see having sex on a train. Sounds like fun. My guess is that it happens a lot. I wonder how many of them were also homicidal? Probably no more than the percentage of people that have never had sex on a train.

There is NO correlation between being sexually uninhibited and violence. NONE. I challenge anyone to find a single peer reviewed article in a psychiatric journal that says it is.

What two people. She talked with a woman and said she was the warden but really was just a guard. The chaplain didn't have the same contact, but the point is that without verification I don't believe Feinstein and I don't believe the cat/fire/watch story until there is some second source
I thought you said she spoke to the warden and a guard...my mistake. The chaplain became very good friends with Amanda.

Yes I'm sure he said he bought the laptop at the train station in MILAN.

More bull from Rudy.
Grinder said:
I didn't say the watch was fictitious. I said AFAIK a watch was in his backpack when caught in the nursery. I would think that when taking in a guy with known stolen goods I wouldn't give back anything that wasn't clearly his.
AC said:
How would you know that the watch wasn't his? You wouldn't, so you would have to return it to Rudy.....maybe...

I didn't say you said the watch was fictitious. I thought you said that Ms Diaz and the story of the burglary was fictitious.. Any way on that point Nina responded to my email.

The local press never covered it. I'm sure if you called mrs Madu Diaz she will show you the records and talk about it. I have no doubt the "experts" who read Peggy and Petes stuff claim I made this up. She's alive well and has police reports.

FYI...I x'd out her email. I replied asking if Ms. Diaz spoke English?

ACbyTesla!

WHAT?
It really happened?
Someone scarfed in her flat before setting the place on fire,
Maria Mandu Diaz did have her Mothers gold watch stolen, and her cat killed?

And she lived near Rudy Guede?

And Guede was busted in a nursery school a few days later with some stolen property on him
from Perugia and a womans gold watch too?

Gosh,
why didn't I believe that ACbyTesla?

Because it wasn't in the courtroom testimony?
Or because some anonymous internet poster continually questions the story?
Gosh, that same anonymous poster still apparently believes that the 332 pages of a book called Murder in Italy, is not believable either.

Yet I'd wager that most everything in that book, of which I have a copy in my hands right now, is true and was written with alotta soul, hard work, and research too. IMHO, Candace Dempsey, and Nina Burleigh(!) have done more to help inform the public of the unjust conviction and imprisonment that Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito endured than this anonymous internet poster, (who, it seems, is always complainin' because these authors books were simply written in what he calls true crime fashion), ever has done or will do...
My opinion only,
RW

FYI RW. Nina just emailed me a minute ago said that they are looking for the police report. My impression is her publisher is looking for it. With a little luck we can provide this to the Doubting Thomas, aka Grinder.

Hi ACbyTesla,
Thanks for the update!
If you get a chance, can you ask Nina Burleigh if she knows if her stolen Mother's gold watch was ever recovered and returned to Maria Mandu Diaz?
Thanks, RW

Will do.

Your skepticism is overdone. Nina Burleigh is a reputable author. Her story has a named, identifiable victim so it's easily falsifiable. You cannot embellish a fire or a dead cat. If she were found to have invented a fantasy she would be damaged goods. You should read her book. If you are sticking to your guns then don't allow yourself any citations that aren't independently corroborated by multiple sources. I shall be keeping a beady eye on you.

There's skepticism and then there's skepticism. Skepticism on a JREF thread is supposed to be the order of the day, but the kind of skepticism that surfaces here often seems artificial and arbitrary. That's what I find with the wholesale dismissal of some of the authors in this... by Grinder.

What gets me is that citing a source is often only a vehicle then to have the source trashed - for no good reason whatsoever. I know no one here does it, but it's funny to read, for instance, the supposed criticism that Candace Dempsey is "only a food author". Well, she may be a food author, but she's also written a fairly genuine and insightful book about the horrid Kercher murder, and the mis-investigation which followed.

She approachable on the points in her book - yes, a book in a true-crime format, so as to avoid getting bogged down in footnotes - approachable enough so that one gets the "equivalent to footnotes" straight from the horses mouth.

Harrison Ford was a studio carpenter before becoming one of the highest grossing actors in Hollywood. Dempsey was a food author before writing the most objective account of where the Perugian authorities went wrong in persecuting AK and RS.

Burleigh? It's been a while since I cracked her book's cover, but she seemed to have wanted to place the mis-investigation into some larger Italian myth... as even the title suggests.

Even Follain, as a true-crime author - is allowed some shelter from strict facts. He perhaps is the closest to "damaged goods" in that he literally invents dialogue of people involved in the horrid mess, where he couldn't possibly have known - or even seems to know their thoughts. Still, where he falls down is that he's not exactly available to provide a cite, when need be, for a contentious claim. Me, I would love to know why he alone of all the authors puts it into Marco Chiacchiera's mouth that Knox, Sollecito, and Lumumba should not have been arrested - and counselled Napoleoni so on the morning of Nov 6, 2007.

The issue is not so much that he makes that claim in his true crime format, it's that he's not exactly available later to discuss it.

Feinstein is worth talking about only because she's so representative of all those tab-authors who really didn't care about the context. Feinstein could just as well be writing about two woman sharing a stateroom on a Tahitian cruise, where one finds the other "standoffish".

In her own book, Knox writes about having some of her writing stuff taken from her - which Knox says she herself just puts her hands up and surrenders to the violence done to her - she knew damn well she could not retaliate, because everything she did at that point became somehow twisted against her.

So the way to survive was to be silent, blend into the walls, not be noticed, and simply surrender to the violence done to her. It's a form of street smarts.

What is telling about Feinstein, and typical of tab-journalists - is to completely ignore the context, because it gets in the way of the lurid.

The difference between the Chiacchiera story and the old lady is that we know Burleigh's source - the old lady herself. We can reasonably believe Burleigh has not made it up. Of course, the old lady might be an attention-seeking fantasist but if she is, she's not a very successful one. What happened to that watch? That's the question.

Frankly, it wouldn't change my opinion of Amanda at all if everything the warden said about her time in her prison was 100 percent correct. Everyone has there own way of dealing with stress. Amanda spent her time reading and studying. One of my favorite movies is the Shawshank Redemption. The novellla it is based on was great too.

Morgan Freeman's Voice Over said:
"Prison time is slow time. Sometimes
it feels like stop-time. So you do
what you can to keep going...
Some fellas collect stamps. Others
build matchstick houses. Andy built
a library. Now he needed a new project.
Tommy was it. It was the same reason
he spent years shaping and polishing
those rocks. The same reason he hung
his fantasy girlies on the wall...

In prison, a man'll do most
anything to keep his mind occupied.

By 1966...right about the time
Tommy was getting ready to take his
exams...it was lovely Racquel."

Amanda got herself through that hell hole by doing what she needed to do. She immersed herself in her books. Good for her.

Sex on a train? I thought it was snakes on a plane? Hey snakes on a train? Wait..they did that already in one of the Indiana Jones movies...

Far be it from me to defend Mignini. But I am pretty sure he pounded one out...(fathered a child) sometime during this trial. Maybe all the sex talk was some sort of aphrodisiac for him? And he is no young man judging by his Zero Mostel looking ahhh head.

So I don't think he was always soft except for in the head perhaps...there he maybe lived in some long lost fantasy from his youth growing up looking down into the local woman's prison. Something is clearly wrong in his though process.

He certainly has exhibited characteristics that should have long ago removed him from a position of power and trust. The sub-related charges he filed in this case would be enough to prove abuse of office anywhere else I am quite sure. In Italy nothing seems to matter. He bugs phones of his enemies, he keeps lists, he is convicted of abuse. that the country decided to ignore that is again a sign that there is really no hope at all for Italy. They may as well be North Korea.

I like Burleigh...I liked her book too. But I happen to agree with Grinder on this one. She should have more data in her files about this gold watch thing IMHO. It should not be the task of acbytesla to hunt out details that Burleigh should have available. (Funny they both have the real name XXXXX isnt it?) Kinda like Prince and that symbol thing.

There is either a whole huge missing story here in the apparent lost, missing, or impossible to find data related to Diaz, Milan school robbery, Perugia law office, and even Tramontano.

There is a ladies watch. What happened to the one found in Milan by police? Why is there no information about this? No one can interview Milan police and ask about these critically important details? Rudy went to the law offices and told them he was sorry but that he bought this computer in Milan. But what are the details? Did he personally return the computer? Why don't we know?

How hard is it for the defenses to hire a PI? Can they access police reports? Can they ask Napolini when she is on the stand? Cant they call witnesses? Like the Milan officer responsible for releasing Guede? He seems to have some responsibility in MK death IMHO. Something in this whole RG affair seems impossibly hidden or unavailable for some reason.
Meanwhile snake in a plane (sex on a train) makes it into court...WTF?

So that I don't single out any one entity...(hello reporters, book authors, crime shows too?) This is a huge missing part of the story that is also likely the key to revealing the motivation for this whole crazy affair of a fraudulent case. And yet no one knows where this gold watch is? Why not? We know about sex on a plane but nothing about a neighbor who was robbed of a gold watch? How did the burglar enter? Where is this data? Why is no one tracking this down? Or did someone or several someones and they got turned down? Well...that is the story then isn't it.

We get bits and pieces from Preston and Burleigh and Candace...but honestly the story they told along with Fisher, and Mark Waterbury who also wrote very good books on this case is not a complete story by any means. In fact these are now rather dated books. I left out the defendants books because frankly while I enjoyed both, these two have just a part of the story too. While locked in jail they missed most of the crazy behind the scenes details...the media mess, the internet mess, the crazy science mess...and sadly I think their lawyers missed most of that too. Or else they would have rented the house and done the break and enter example on tape. They would have done certified sound tests. Hired a pathologist to review the TOD data available...

For me it seems that the appeal to the SC needs raise just one point. That it is fundamentally wrong and illegal to use anything from RG fast track trial and the decisions from that in any part of the case against AK and RS knowing full well that they never had the chance to defend themselves in his case at all. It is illogical and the very definition of an unfair trial. Bad enough that one can not simply strike this from the case against AK and RS ....Italy does the world a disservice by pretending to operate a democracy with a honest legal system and government. This case is enough to prove that they know about and understand what a monumental fraud they are putting forth.

They can talk in Machiavellian circles all they wish...they still stink like rotten fish...and their mothers too. :-)

The answers to all this are in the transcripts which are all available. Why are people complaining? Read them and find things.

I noticed this translation of Brocchi on the IIP wiki. http://murderofmeredithkercher.com/paolo-brocchi/

There's plenty of info about the break-in and his dealings with the police in Milan and Guede was facing charges for the nursery break-in.

Amanda got herself through that hell hole by doing what she needed to do. She immersed herself in her books. Good for her.

Acbytesla do you know this song?

It's a mystery to me - the game commences
For the usual fee - plus expenses
Confidential information - is a diary
This is my investigation - it's not a public inquiry
I go checking out the reports - digging up the dirt
You get to meet all sorts in this line of work
Treachery and treason - there's always an excuse for it
And when I find the reason I still can't get used to it
And what have you got at the end of the day?
What have you got to take away?
A bottle of whisky and a new set of lies
Blinds on the windows and a pain behind the eyes
Scarred for life - nocompensation
Private investigations
