Merged Global Warming Discussion II: Heated Conversation

Here, this winter where i live you`d think we had global, cooling as one of coldest winters AND lots of snow. Many many days below zero and quite a few colder than minus 20F. I can never remember water lines freezing like this before where cities having people run water fast.
And yet thirty years ago this would have been fairly unremarkable. This says a lot about what's happened since then.

But....i guess if the overall planet is getting hotter, that`s where the proof lies.
Indeed. There's a world beyond our immediate horizons - something which many people fail to grasp :boxedin:. It's their loss, in my opinion.

Yes, those are accurate, they indicate Sea Surface Temperature anomalies over the baseline (average for March 18th) of 1979-2000. It should be noted that the graphic was a plotting of temperatures on the specific date of March 18, 2014, not an average of March's temperatures. I should be able to run a month long average within the next week or so and we can see how that looks.
Could you give me a fortnight to assimilate the coffee horror first?

Move over Alabama, Wyoming takes the lead!

Wyoming blocks new science standards
http://trib.com/news/local/educatio...cle_5d0ec624-6b50-5354-b015-ca2f5f7d7efe.html

One of lawmakers' big concerns with the Next Generation Science Standards is an expectation that students will understand humans have significantly altered the Earth's biosphere. In other words, the standards say global warming is real.

That's a problem for some Wyoming lawmakers.

"[The standards] handle global warming as settled science," said Rep. Matt Teeters, a Republican from Lingle who was one of the footnote's authors. "There's all kind of social implications involved in that that I don't think would be good for Wyoming."

Just goes to prove that you don't need to be hidden in the backwater cesspools of the bible-belt to achieve levels of ignorance once reserved for the fervently inbred denizens of the deep south. Representative Teeters is reserving his spot in the public record!

Teeters said teaching global warming as fact would wreck Wyoming's economy, as the state is the nation's largest energy exporter, and cause other unwanted political ramifications.

The Worst Is Yet To Come

The New York Times Nature
Climate change is already having sweeping effects on every continent and throughout the world’s oceans, scientists reported Monday, and they warned that the problem is likely to grow substantially worse unless greenhouse emissions are brought under control.

Pffft. They're (a) all just wrong (somehow) and don't want to admit it, or (b) they're part of the vast, worldwide conspiracy to promote the false idea of global warming to do, well, something nefarious. (Exactly what is not quite clear.)

I remember being quite frustrated and amazed when the precursor's to the rank and file denier's of today started talking about "changing their reality" by choosing how to think and talk about the world. It just seemed strange that people would find excitement and joy in discovering and unleashing the power of willful self-delusion. We see the results of this mass exodus from reality in the results of the last 20 years.

religion's been around for a while - why are you surprised

This was much more cultish than the religions of my primary experience, and these were people who I had witnessed making rational arguments previously. It was like they became disillusioned and then abandoned reality as a means of expressing their disappointment.

I still can't believe a reputable psychological journal pulled a well-evidenced and compellingly supported article that is still considered fully valid and meritorious in the field, because a conservative political organization threatened to sue them on fallacious grounds (the well and supported evidence of the accuracy of statements -AKA the paper itself! - is proof against the grounds they threatened to sue over).

the paper is still available from the authors.

"Recursive fury: Conspiracist ideation in the blogosphere in response to research on conspiracist ideation" -

Implications for understanding conspiracist ideation.
Our principal thesis is that some of the responses to LOG12 voiced in the blogosphere satisfy attributes of conspiracist ideation by the criteria defined at the outset. Two attributes deserve to be highlighted: First, most of the hypotheses can be united under the immutable belief that "there must be something wrong" (MbW in Table 3) and that the authors of LOG12 engaged in intentional malfeasance (NI, NS). Those underlying beliefs infused conspiracist elements even into those hypotheses that would be expected to arise during routine scholarly critique. For example, the \scamming" hypothesis evolved continuously without being guided by clear a priori assumptions about what would constitute a "scammed" response prole, thereby ultimately rendering this hypothesis self-sealing and falsifiable (criterion, SS) It is this psychological attribute that points towards a conspiracist component rather than conventional scholarly critique...

Our research also points to at least two issues that merit further investigation. The first issue arises from the well-established fact that the rejection of climate science is strongly associated with right-wing political leanings and the embrace of a "fundamentalist" laissez-faire vision of the free market (e.g., Dunlap & McCright, 2008; Feygina, Jost, & Goldsmith, 2010; Hamilton, 2011; Heath & Giord, 2006; Kahan, 2010; Kahan, Jenkins-Smith, & Braman, 2011; McCright & Dunlap, 2011a, 2011b). There is a parallel literature that has linked conspiracist ideation, at least in some cases, with right-wing political leanings: For example, Swami (2012) found endorsement of an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory in Malaysia to be associated with right-wing authoritarianism. Similar associations with authoritarianism have been reported by Abalakina-Paap, Stephan, Craig, and Gregory (1999) and Swami et al. (2012) in samples of Western participants. One might therefore be tempted to consider conspiracist ideation another manifestation of the "paranoid style" in American politics mainly focused on the political Right that was famously highlighted by Hofstadter (1966)...

Second, we uncovered a potentially novel aspect of conspiracist reasoning when some of the later hypotheses were found to involve a residual impact of earlier, discarded hypotheses. For example, whereas critics initially argued that the results of LOG12 were invalid because "skeptic" bloggers were not contacted (hypothesis 2 in Table 3), upon release of evidence to the contrary, the same conclusion of invalidity was reached by other means; either because of a preliminary report of the data during a colloquium (hypothesis 3); or because of the presumedly faulty timing of the correspondence (hypothesis 4); or because \skeptic" bloggers were emailed different versions of the survey (hypothesis 5). All of those hypotheses rely on counterfactual thinking because no \skeptic" blogger posted links to the survey, and therefore neither the dates of correspondence nor the version of the survey (nor any other event involving those bloggers) could have affected the data as reported in LOG12...

I haven't seen much rationality from the right wing anywhere in recent years...there is no centrist small c conservative left.....even Nancy Eisenhower and Colin Powell amongst many others abandoned the looney toon Repuglies over the last while.

So the fellow travellers have to match RR unrealities with anti-science and conspiracy crap from the denial crowd....loonies the lot of them.

The weight of the world tho is overcoming it and they are becoming a laughingstock...if unfortunately a still dangerous one as polio in California shows from the anti-science lunacy of anti-vaxxer influence.

These are partisan political policy advocacy groups, please link to the "growing number of scientists" you referred to.

Both sides are chock full of partisan political policy advocacy groups

As a matter of fact the latest IPCC report is mostly about policy

I am not certain what the point is in citing this article: Low Atlantic hurricane activity in the 1970s and 1980s compared to the past 270 years from 2007.
I do not think that anyone disputes that it is unknown whether global warming will increase the number of hurricanes. It is the intensity of the storms that is thought to increase:
What is the link between hurricanes and global warming?
There are two aspects to hurricane activity that are often confused so it helps to consider them separately. Specifically, does global warming cause more frequent hurricanes and does it cause more intense hurricanes?
The answers are
* we do not know.
* the evidence says yes
