I meant the first shot against the US. And actually, the first Japanese shot against the Allies occurred about 16 hours before Pearl Harbor, when they shot down a Catalina from Singapore that was searching for the invasion convoy.

Also, I thought the PBY only dropped smoke floats before Ward opened fire, and didn't use depth charges until it was obvious that the destroyer was attacking something. I need to reread Prange; it's been way too long.

Based on the surveys I've performed with those meters they don't have a chance in hell of detecting a nuclear warhead from another ship. The strength of the source is too low and the distance is far too great for any neutron detector in my opinion. That is unless a boarding party is allowed to do detailed surveys.

Iran probably wishes they had weapon systems sophisticated enough to even make this a problem their warships needed to solve.

See that's the weird thing. The news of this broke a week or so ago and then... nothing. Near as I can tell there hasn't been any weird Iranian naval activity since then.

If they keep up deployments rather than doing a one off cruise any aircraft shootdowns would presumably be made with RIM-66 standard missiles from ships which are so equipped. The current vessels obviously have minimal anti aircraft defences.

It would remove a large percentage of their presence in home waters. I guess someone else will have to fill in for the more mundane navy tasks S&R and such things in the gulf.

Their Moudge class frigates carry ADMs derives from Standard with Russian assistance.

I doubt there are many Standards left but they have an indigenous ADM.

Again, I feel that question misses the point.
The point I think the Iranian government is trying to make is that nobody much likes having foreign warships patrolling their shore.

The responses of this thread suggest Americans share that view, but instead of asking whether American ships should be patrolling the Gulf , the responses seem to be primarily "We've got bigger guns than you."
Iran is well aware of that. They have no plans to invade you, indeed they will possibly end up having to ask for medical help if anyone of their crew get ill.

That's where America wins; with bubble gum and chocolate; with kindness and decency and meaning well, even when they screw up outstandingly. Nobody thinks the Vincennes deliberately killed a load of civilians. They know that it was a screw up.
Whether PanAm103 was a revenge attack for that or not we don't know- a lot of people in Washington had a strong incentive not to.
Telling people you spend more on guns than their entire national economy makes you no friends. It just makes people wonder what in hell you plan to do with them.

Adm. Afshin Rezayee Haddad was bluffing. Tehran did indeed dispatch a task force of two rather aged warships—only one of them meaningfully armed.

But the Iranian navy’s 29th Flotilla never went anywhere near the U.S. It barely even left Iran’s territorial waters. And instead of sending a message to Washington, the flotilla merely skirmished with African pirates before quietly returning home.
