CVS to stop selling cigarettes

So, do they have a dispensing pharmacist there? or is it more of a paradox, aspirin, condoms type pharmacy?
It still baffles me how businesses can ethically sell a product such as cigarettes...

Yes, they have a dispensing pharmacist there, generally in the back, separate from the rest of the store.

I don't know why you'd be baffled that business would sell a product such as cigarettes. There's no end to the harmful products sold by businesses. Cookies, tequila, and soda, to name but a few.

Walgreens made similar noises when they made a big deal out of dropping alcohol sales from their stores back in the early 90's (IIRC). They are quietly re-introducing it in a lot of their stores in the past few years. I believe it is to help them compete with the CVS, which is expanding into Walgreens' heartland. CVS is also a huge seller of alcohol beverages - In the state of Indiana, I believe that they are the largest liquor chain.

When I smoked, I always bought at Walgreen's because they were the lowest price anywhere. They also have a nice alcohol selection at prices lower than liquor or discount stores. I have no idea why they try so hard to sell addictive and dangerous substances.

cookies, tequila and soda, if used in moderation will do no harm. Cigarettes, however, are a different kettle of fish.

I guess I'm baffled, because in all the countries I been in, I have never seen any pharmacy style store that would also sell alcohol and tobacco. However, thus is in a country that considers it appropriate to sell guns the same way, so why should I be surprised?

Pretty sure I've seen pharmacies in grocery-type stores in Europe (Germany comes to mind) that also sell tobacco and alcohol. I could be mistaken, though.

Michael Moore had a bit on this in Sicko. I think he was in England, went into a pharmacy and asked where they were hiding the potato chips (or maybe he said potato chips).

I try to avoid CVS (Crappy Value Store).

I think the pharmacy in a CVS or Walgreens may technically be a separate business from the rest of the store, just like the ones in supermarkets and grocery stores. They have separate hours, separate employees, etc.

CVS and Walgreens in non-downtown areas are not what you might think of as convenience stores. They're not what you'd find attached to a typical gas station, they are fairly large stores, averaging over 10,000 square feet of sales floor space and are basically mini-supermarkets. I'm not sure if there are any pharmacies that are just pharmacies in the US any more.

Am I reading this right? You had a pharmacy chain selling CIGARETTES?
Are they nuts?
Apart from the total lack of ethics displayed, what a lawsuit waiting to happen!

I am shaking my head in wonderment. Needless to say, that would never be dreamt of in Australia.

What sort of lawsuit do you think would be justified by this?

We’ve come to the conclusion that cigarettes have no place in a setting where health care is being delivered,” CVS Caremark CEO Larry Merlo told AP of the decision.

Awesome!

Do they plan to stop selling soda and high-fat junk snack foods as well?

Gosh, I bet this completely makes everyone forget about the CVS fradulent prescription billing scandal from last year.

You are pretty much mistaken as far as I can tell. I live in Germany and I have not seen any pharmacies selling tobacco or alcohol. Feel free to show me an example tho.

There are on the other hand supermarket which are allowed to sell some type of uncontrolled substance you might also find in pharmacies, and pharmacies shop which use rented space in gallery in a supermarket. ETA but I never saw it in the supermarket itself, e.g. before the paying of supermarket stuff

Actually the Wal Mart up the road from where I am now has a pharmacy and sells both tobacco and firearms.

No liquor, though.
