Coke creates advert that causes conservatives to go nuts

the ad features the song "America the beautiful" being sung in many languages. I liked it.

Online trolls are upset, claiming English only. Really?

Even Joe the Plumber got on the actions

Personally I think Coca-Cola went too far with this commercial. America is suppose to be the "Melting Pot"! People come to America to be Americans!!! Don't give this BS about culture! Loyalty to AMERICA above all, speak english then have your damn traditions... I celebrate my German heritage BUT not at the expense of AMERICA!!!!

Can he say that in the Lakota language?

You and Beck are both not even wrong.

This has nothing to do with conservatism.

In fact the closest you came to a cogent point was in illustrating that art does not come from language, but then you alluded it comes from culture, that is also not even wrong. It IS culture.

Art comes from culture as it makes it.

So please explain how I was so far off I wasn't even wrong.

Dear Travis,

To the degree these disparate cultures are bringing scientific and artistic principles, sure. To the degree they're bringing different costumes and foods, not so much.

What? How do different costumes and food harm culture?

(1) Not all change is good, and we can sometimes choose between which changes we would like to have and which we wouldn't.

Is there a reason that this change would be bad?

(2) Language is the primary determinant of statehood. A French America would be thinking differently than an English one.

Your evidence of this is?

(3) Why would the commercial producers include anything but Kumbaya?

Huh?

Hey Travis, one only has to remember is that bigotry is an unreasonable hatred towards specific groups. This is why arguments from racists make no sense.

And people expressing their joy in being American in a language other than English is bad because?

(2) Language is the primary determinant of statehood. A French America would be thinking differently than an English one.

No, the determinant of statehood is the ability to exercise sovereignty within their borders an to be recognized as a state by others. Examples of multi-lingual states would be Russia, India, Switzerland and Canada. A French speaking America with the same historical processes would be the same, just like a English speaking America, but that developed from a 18th century French colony with the attendant legal, religious and political heritage would be very different from the America we know.

Where on earth does this idea come from that original culture means English speaking and white?

Just how far back do we have to go to find this monochromatic paradise of yours?

About 50 years - "Leave It to Beaver" was a documentary, didn't ya know?

Not exactly.

As everyone knows, there was a black character in the episode where Wally, Eddie and Lumpy are hired to park cars for the Langley's, whose daughter is getting married, and who employ a black maid who invites Wally & Eddie into the kitchen for refreshments (Lumpy had left by this point).

Also, they had three Mexicans in the episode where the Varela's move to Mayfield, and whose son Chuey becomes friendly with Beaver, until that rat Eddie Haskell teaches Beaver how to tell Chuey he "has a face like a pig" in Spanish. Lots of hurt feelings, as you might imagine.

Dear Reiver,

Yay, I have neighbours I can't even talk to but we're all part of this wonderful stew of humanity called America...

How could a French-speaking America even come into existence without being connected with France or other French-derived countries?

Have you never heard of translational difficulties? Different languages are different ways of thinking. To speak French is to think differently because there are words for X in one language that are lacking in another, and vice versa.

Beyond that, everyone here, who are globalist sophisticates to a man as far as I can tell, doesn't care a whiff about tradition, including the several-century-old tradition of speaking English in America. As Thomas Cahill put it in The Gifts of the Jews, (paraphr.) we are creatures enamoured of the New and increasingly despising of the Old, of Tradition. I think this is a problem, that Tradition offers stability from which to survey the New. Endless New is toxic to Tradition and therefore eats away our foundation for identity.

Dear Travis,

By engulfing, displacing, and replacing the originals.

Only if one values tradition.

Common sense: language is the chief basis for national sovereignty.

?

Cpl Ferro

I don't value tradition. So can you think of another reason that I should think this change is bad?

I think that depends on what you mean by "caring" about tradition. There are certain specific traditions that I take value and take part in, and I wouldn't want to lose the ability to do so -- so yes, I care about them. But as for whether other people value them or take part in them, you're right, I don't give even a fraction of a whiff. Furthermore, I think expecting everyone else to care about the same traditions you care about, simply because they happen to live in the same nation as you, is not only incredibly stupid, petty, presumptuous and small-minded, but also a full 180-degrees against the very concept of personal freedom that the US was founded on. And frankly I find that mindset so ridiculously, willfully wrong-headed and abhorrent that I derive substantial joy from watching its dwindling numbers of proponents descend into panic-stricken meltdowns as they see the worst of their misplaced, irrational fears coming true before their very eyes.

“diversity” = perversity
If Coca Cola want’s multicultural America, why don’t they have their cans and bottles reflect all the different ways to say it on their labels? Don’t like their product any longer.
It seems like whenever a company decides it wants to be a global, diverse company, it really goes down the toilet.
I’m just sick of it used to attack me

The white Christian majority

To tear us down

And replace us with a mongrelized Brazil type culture

That will be so lovely

Meanwhile elites....Weinstein and Alinsky types

Will sit back intact and enjoy...
Mission accomplished
There is a bit of irony here as the food police like Bloomy and Michelle who see soda as bad support this multi-crap
The problem with “diversity” is that it is used politically to denigrate American values and traditions, thus weakening it’s culture.

It is so much easier to take over a country when it’s citizens are not united in a like minded cultural alliance.
I was so pissed I almost throw my jalapeno popper at the TV...
Multiculturalism = AntiAmericanism
This is the final straw. No more Coke products for me. And Pepsi is just as liberal so adios to their corn syrup beverages too and their subsidiaries like Pizza Hut and Taco Bell. McDonalds caters to the food stamp crowd so they’re toast also.

And vegetables? Forget it. There’s no mandatory labeling so I can’t tell how much pesticides were used or who harvested it; They could be stealth selling organic for all I know. And we all know how much liberals support organic produce, so adios to all vegetables.

Fruit too. Who the hell picked it? I’m boycotting until it’s labeled 100% picked by AMERICANS.

And Meat? Heck all these liberal bleeding heart animal rights people are causing humane treatment policies to be implemented and that’s driving up the cost so, to hell with that also.

Same thing for fish and sustainable species management. I can’t recall the last time I had a piece of North Atlantic cod caught netted by a Gloucester fisherman, heck it might even be woman fishing for them now, so forget it.

Whole foods and hippy stores, hell no!

Mexican restaurants and their illegal staff, hell no!

Any store that has “EBT welcomed here”, forget about.

And car maintenance, I’m doing it all myself now. You know how many local service centers work on GM cars? They are supporting big union payola and I don’t want any part of it.

I’m offended.

I'm pretty sure that some of those latest batch of tweets are parodies, if not many of the earlier ones.

Specifically the one about throwing a jalapeno popper at the TV and the other one saying "adios Coke!"

I'd argue that a national identity is not static, and in fact changes over time. In fact, I'd hope so, in that a nation changes in response to the realities of the times.

In terms of "new" eating away at tradition, you could argue that about almost any change. The ever-increasing shift from rural to urban, the shift from rail travel to road, etc.

First, learn a bit of your neighbors' languages.
Second, I'm fairly certain that Whorf's ideas about language being deterministic of culture have been shown to have been wildly overstated, if not ass-backwards.
Third, if you value tradition then you must agree that residents of Florida, Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada and California should speak only Spanish, which has been continuously spoken in these states for two centuries longer than English. (I'm ignoring the actual indigenous languages because, let's face it, they were even browner than the Spanish and Mexicans, and thus don't count.)
