Michelle Bachmann Chews Out Stephen Hawking

So apparently Stephen Hawking admitting he was wrong about black holes means all scientists are full of crap, according to Michelle Bachmann.

EDIT: And Dear God I'm thick, apparently the Borowitz Report is a satirical thing. -_-
Somebody needs to chew her out. Science is whats given humanity its comforts and to attack an eminent scientist like Hawkins just goes to demonstrate the level to which the goddidit crowd will stoop.

It's not so much that Ms. Bachmann doesn't know a lot about certain scientific areas; it's the fact that her ignorance doesn't stop her from making confident pronouncements about those areas that I find particularly distressing. If you don't know about it, don't talk about it.

Not at all, but a huge fan. Am a fan of all successful women even Nancy Pelosi. If we women are not for us, who will be??????? :crowded::crowded:
Sometimes when one admires someone who is smarter than oneself, it is difficult to see the limits of that persons qualities. Even if they may be obvious to others.

Well, it is the land of the free and the home of the brave where we can talk about whatever we want, when we want and with who we want. She has Civil Rights too.

So, are you saying you wish she could keep girls from getting the the HPV vaccine? Are you saying you wish she could enforce the teaching of creationism in place of or at least alongside that of evolution?

I also should point out that she is far from alone in her attacks on science. Consider the Republican antagonism toward climate change.
The climate has been changing for over 4 billion years with out our help. Warm is good and cold is bad. Who does not know that? See anyone prospering in the Polar Vortex?
Nope, I am saying what I said that Michele is one of 400 plus Representatives and no one has the power to keep girls from getting the HPV vaccine except their parents. Even the Speaker can't do that.

How stupid. I can't describe how disgusted I am at this ignorant woman. People like her give America a bad name.

At least shes not completely stupid. She must be a Sara Palin devotee.

Why is this story still being discussed as if it really happened, and as if there was a famous wheelchair-bound expert on black holes called "Hawkins"?

The problem with free speech comes when it presents a danger, such as shouting "fire" in a crowded theater--an act of speech that has been determined by the supreme court to be illegal.

Those who are speaking out against taking measures to ease climate change, or claiming that the idea is a hoax either have an ulterior political or religious motive or are very misinformed at many levels. Insofar as they are in positions of power, they present a threat to the planet.

Bachmann's position as a US representative, and in your estimation a smart woman, gives her a certain credibility among her fans and constituents. Her speech should be carefully considered and vetted, and checked by her staff for accuracy, lest she inadvertently create a public hazard. Her detractors might even rightfully accuse her of lying when she passes along misinformation.

Recall that you were wrong about your notion that Harry Reid was against LGBT issues, no doubt because you were misinformed by a source which either didn't bother to confirm their information, or which has an ulterior motive and is attempting to sway public opinion. You acted on this incorrect information by passing it along on a popular web site, JREF. Do you now want to retract your post? If not you are open to being accused of lying. You see?

I don't usually wish death upon people, but when I do, it's Michelle Bachmann.

Seriously, if she died tomorrow I would dance a jig. She's a real *****.
Classy. And you didn't even spell her name right. I hope you didn't voodoo doll someone named Michelle Bachmann to death, while Michele Bachmann lives on.

You and I will probably have to agree to disagree on the subject of climate change. I'm going with the atmospheric scientists.

People in positions of influence have the power of the bully pulpit. Parents influenced by Bachmann's anti-science nonsense can keep their daughters from getting the HPV vaccine. Are you seriously contending she has no influence on public opinion?

Does it bother you at all that Bachmann advocates the teaching of creationism in public schools? BTW, are you a creationist?

ETA: Regarding Bachmann's power to influence people, consider this (from the site):

Michele Bachmann’s livid attack on Hawking and science has also gained enough attention to result in a statement by Republican Representative and Chairman of the House Science Committee Lamar Smith:

“Going forward, members of the House Science Committee will do our best to avoid listening to scientists.”

I am going with what the weather and climate. Those "scientist" are full of beans. It is shown more and more as their little scheme blows up in their faces. I love it - polar vortex - "climate scientist trapped in ice and evacuated where they determined there was none" - Gotta love it. Europe quitting on 18th Century wind and solar power cause it is unreliable and why it was dropped for electricity, gas and oil over 100 years ago. Low tech nonsense. Warm is cold - cold is bad.
I have no problem with creationist. Why not? Most of us are bright enough to make our own decisions and handle conflicting ideas. To date, we don't know.
No, not a creationist but do believe in a power greater than my self. Michele's influence on public opinion is the same as the other 400 plus Representatives including Boehner and Pelosi. They are not G-ds but elected officials. People would have to be pretty dumb to not listen to the Doctor.
We won't be around for the end of the story, but future generations will be laughing their heads off over this hoax put over on guilable folk.

Harry is a Morman, a Senator in my State and know his position well and the Morman position on LGBT is well known. Oops, "lying". :boxedin: Accuse away!
We are all familiar with the "fire" thing and that is not the free speech we are talking about. Such an olde saw.

. . . (snip) . . . I have no problem with creationist. Why not? Most of us are bright enough to make our own decisions and handle conflicting ideas. To date, we don't know.

So, you have no problem with people who believe that the earth and, indeed, the universe, are only a few thousand years old, who reject the evidence of fossils and radiometric dating, who also reject the theory of Relativity, as well as quantum mechanics, and who indeed trash science as a whole. So, do you also have no problem with flat-earthers? How about "truthers" and "birthers"?

No, not a creationist but do believe in a power greater than my self.

I'm assuming, then, that you accept the validity of such things as radiometric dating and all the other stuff I cited above. Yet, it doesn't bother you that large numbers of Americans believe stuff that is, scientifically, hog-wash?

So, if Bachmann's influence is so minor, she's essentially just a cypher. Why, then, do you admire her?

As always, Michele is a super smart, well educated, caring person who puts others before her self, a high achieving female should about cover it.
I believe in America, in Americans and the right of the people to believe what they want and express themselves in free speech. I am not their mother, just a fellow American. No, not a flat earther. Actually, I don't know how anyone thought the earth was flat when it is so obvious that it is round. See. we don't know how long G-d's day is, but surely not a 24 hour day. G-d's day may be 1/2 billion years each.

I think it's because the Bible says an Angel stands at the four corners of the Earth. The great plagues, the famines, and the fall of Rome caused vast amounts of knowledge to be lost. The surviving peoples were extremely frightened, so they turned to the church for leadership, where they were taught all kinds of nonsense that people just two generations before would've laughed at.

The sad part is that nonsense is still being slung around today, and people can be confused into believing that no one knows for sure. Who better spreads that confusion than elected leaders who are misinformed or choose to disregard facts in favor of ancient fictions?

I think those half naked, crotch grabbing celebs got lots more influence then elected officials, like the detrimental Hip Hop culture for instance which has taught men to be thugs and women to be disrespected Hos.

Wow!!!

You honestly believe that a particular genre of music -and a very recent one at that- has more influence on people's characters than the people holding the highest elected offices?

*damn* If that's true, I'm surprised humanity has survived....
