Apparently the Grammys hate Christianity and "others"

So, if you missed it the Grammys did a stunt at their award show where 33 same sex couples got married while Macklemore performed. Naturally elements of the right wing have gone batty about this.

Jim Garrow thinks everyone should repent immediately. He also thinks we should boycott all the companies that advertised during the broadcast.

Rush Limbaugh claims no one watches the horrible Grammys because they are too sick with a liberal agenda. Also the Grammys might have attacked all Christians with their ideals.

Lynn Wooley thinks this is a sign the nation might be past the point of no return.

I don’t know these people, but — Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ “Same Love” gay anthem became the theme song for 33 newlyweds with Queen Latifah officiating the marriages. As the network, CBS was complicit in this celebration of perversity. WOULD SOMEBODY PLEASE TELL ME WHERE THIS COUNTRY GOES FROM HERE? Homosexuals have taken over the country and I’m just curious to see what they do next. I guess they want a gay president. Maybe a gay Pope. (!)

Yes, Gay Pope was always at the top of human rights wish lists.

I suppose that a few years from now, same sex “marriage” will be as common as divorce is now. I’ll bet it fades out with time as more and more men realize that women are pretty dang special. I guess we’ll see.

Yeah, we all know that the reason people are gay is that they don't think women are special. That totally explains lesbianism.

Then Fox News reporter Todd Starnes figured the whole thing out.
This was not about marriage. This was about bashing god and the church.

Macklemore launches a hate filled, bigoted, intolerant diatribe against Christians.

Then Breitbart.com got their say on it.

For one night, an awards show understood what it meant to appeal to the masses. And then the 2014 Grammy Awards fired off a culture war missile aimed at those who believe in a traditional definition of marriage.

Yep, because of the Grammys men can no longer sell their daughters off to wealthy landowners.

Then Tim Graham realized the real tragedy in all this.

They can say this is not a stunt, but that's exactly what it is, a piece of musical agitprop to mock the traditional values of conservative American Christians, Jews, Muslims, and others.

Yeah, didn't you know that if you disagree with someone else on a social issue you are mocking them by having your different belief? And did you know that all Christians, Jews, Muslims and "others" are completely united on the issue of gay marriage?

Jim Hoft helpfully points out the vile, bigoted lyrics that Macklemore used to wage a war on the Bible.

Madonna, Queen Latifah and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis held a mass wedding at the Grammys tonight in L.A.
But not before they bashed conservative Christians.

In "Same Love" the rapper Macklemore attacked conservatives:

A pre-conceived idea of what it all meant
For those that like the same sex had the characteristics
The right-wing conservatives think it's a decision
And you can be cured with some treatment and religion
Man-made, rewiring of a pre-disposition, playing God
Ahh, nah, here we go
America the brave still fears what we don't know
And "God loves all his children" is somehow forgotten

Then Madonna appeared with a cane(?) and Queen Latifah married 33 couples, gay and straight.

It was all about true love - as long as you agree with them. If you don't agree, you get ridiculed and attacked.

Yeah. Can't you see all the attacking going on in those lyrics? I mean how much more obvious could a hate song be? The lyrics actually say that "God loves all his children" and every good Christian knows that is just blasphemy. Way to slander all Christians Mackelmore.

Why are you intolerant of my bigotry? Truly, it is you, who is the intolerant one.

I’ll bet it fades out with time as more and more men realize that women are pretty dang special.

I love this. Bigots just don't understand the thing they hate. Obviously, gay men just haven't met the right woman, yet.

Just decided to watch it as this is obviously the new Janet Jackson's boob/Miley Cyrus tongue outrage-a-thon, and I wanted to watch it just to see what some people will go to any length to be offended by.

Anyway, two things:

1.) There were not 33 same-sex couples; there were 33 couples, of which some were same-sex couples.

2.) Beyonce, who announced it, has really let herself go, hasn't she!?

Mind you, the bit that I didn't like was when Macklemore said, "Whatever god you believe in we come from the same one."

During that bit, was that Nina Simone's "I Wish That I Knew How It Feels To Be Free" playing?

“It was horrible, it was despicable,” Limbaugh said of the show.

Then he saw the part about the same-sex marriages and really got upset.

Where were the "vile" lyrics? Some other song maybe?

Beyonce? Isn't that Queen Latifah?

I'm thinking that look is: pimp crossed with southern gentleman with a veneer of ice cream truck driver.

This seems relevant to some of the comments.

My only take away from that is that people feel free to say stupid **** on social media. More reason not to get involved with social media.

Either that, or the blogger has horrible taste in friends. But that seems overly mean. I think the problem is broader.

I kind of enjoyed it - and even Madonna couldn't quite ruin it.
True, since it was already "ruined."

I have this crazy idea that the Grammys were supposed to be about music awards, not a platform for self-righteous Hollywood to "make a statement." It reeks of (among other things) hypocrisy, as I'm sure they'd have a hissy if someone used a major awards ceremony to roll out some right-wing agenda.

This reminds me of the time I was at a Linda Ronstadt concert; it was a presidential election year and she paused at one point to go on and on about why we should vote for the Democratic nominee. Finally someone near us went "shut up and sing!" to the sound of cheers and applause. To her credit she didn't appear to get too huffy about it, but it was still out of line.

I don't want any entertainer preaching/pimping their political views to me - whether I agree with them or not - for the same reason I don't want to hear Obama or GW tell me what music I should listen to. That's not what we're paying you for and we don't give a flip what your opinion is about it. Stick to your knitting. A totally obnoxious, no-class move on their part.

I get what you are saying, but a large part of Macklemore's appeal is the message of his songs. They run against the current of most successful rap, talking about buying clothes second hand and respecting people that are often denigrated in rap. That is what has made him so successful. This is a natural extension of that persona.

If Ted Nugent was tearing up the charts and selling out stadiums like Macklemore with songs about the 2nd amendment, I would expect a NRA rally or something similar during his presentation at the Grammys. That is who he is why people like him. His message would be central to his performance.

I think both of these are different from the Linda Ronstadt example. Her music and performance are not tied to her political views in any meaningful way and she was just trying to leverage her audience for a political cause. That is decidedly not cool to the paying audience.
