To be honest I think the mistake was that many in the GOP never really got that the Christianfascist voters actually believed in their ideology. I think they sort of figured that these were votes to be had and that they couldn't really be so devoted to their top down religious based authoritarian rhetoric.

Wasn't the last Republican President to preside over a balanced budget Eisenhower? Even then, not for the entirety of his term in office. Are we saying that Nixon, Ford, Reagan and G.H.
