Chris Christy will resign?

Apparently Zimmer kept very detailed notes when she realized that she was being shaken down about the Rockefeller project. Check out what she wrote:

This isn't her speaking now, this is her writing this down the day it happened. Ruh-roh.

The Lt. Governor denied this happened. However, you notice that she did not take any questions?

During the Meet the Press seance, they conjured up several dead and cold Republican politicians (Gingrich, Guliani, etc) for their opinion. Naturally, they repeated what Priebus said, that we don't need to investigate Christie because he gave such a good speech. Yet, here we have the Lt. Gov ducking questions. So, even if you bought the Republican bull about the Christie speech, this is going in the opposite direction.

An investigation IS unnecessary. If they don't find anything, then it's a big waste of money. If they do find something, then it could tarnish the Republican brand, thus destroying America.

Well yes, there is that.

Maybe Christie could go to cronyism rehab for a month or two. Isn't that how conservative icons generally slough off their tarnish when they get caught red-handed? Go to rehab and maybe do a mea culpa or two?

Ezra Klein makes a good point for Democrats who keep complaining that Obama isn't good at "twisting arms" like LBJ. If you follow US political commentary I'm sure you've heard the refrain.

This is exactly what "twisting arms" looks like in practice.

Pining for LBJ, We Got Christie

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s recent scandals won’t impress anyone who has read Robert Caro’s biography of Lyndon Baines Johnson.

In the fourth volume of Caro’s biography, he tells the story of Margaret Mayer, a Dallas Times Herald reporter who was investigating the television station LBJ owned. Johnson had his aides call Mayer’s bosses and let slip that if Mayer kept investigating Johnson’s business, Johnson might sic the Federal Communications Commission on the Dallas Times Herald’s businesses -- which included TV and radio stations. Mayer’s bosses got the message. Her investigation was quickly terminated.

That, however, was an example of LBJ’s lighter touch. According to another story Caro recounts, Johnson had long been irritated by the coverage of Bascom Timmons, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s chief Washington correspondent. So he called the paper’s owner, Amon Carter Jr., and told him that it’d be a shame -- just a shame -- if the Fort Worth Army Depot ended up getting closed. Even worse, what if the Carswell Air Force Base were shuttered, too? Then there was the Trinity River Navigation Project, which would make the river navigable from its mouth in the Gulf of Mexico all the way to the Dallas-Fort Worth area. All these projects meant jobs, development, and, ultimately, readers and advertisers for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

“You all ought to get the best damn fellow you can for the Star-Telegram,” LBJ instructed, “and I’d have a man there, when he speaks up, he doesn’t say ‘I’m Bascom Timmons.’” Carter did as he was told.

An investigation IS unnecessary.

We're past that. We are already into criminal investigations.

If they don't find anything, then it's a big waste of money.

I'm not sure if you are aware of this but you can't invoke the 5th in a civil case. The only valid reason to invoke the 5th is for criminal activity. So, by simple definition, there had to have been criminal activity. There is a question of what can be proved but, again, there is no longer a debate if criminal activity occurred.

If they do find something, then it could tarnish the Republican brand, thus destroying America.

They have already subpoenaed records from the NJ Republican party. The complete loss of the heavily addicted and self-destructive GOP could only help America. Bridget Kelly has also switched lawyers and is no longer playing the scapegoat for the Christie administration. It's just a matter of time.

Oh, and he could claim it was a youthful indiscretion. I think Henry Hyde holds the record from when he claimed an adulterous affair at 41 was a youthful indiscretion, but if 50 is the new 40, then Chris Christie at 51 could claim the whole thing was merely youthful indiscretion. Kids these days.

Shutting down the bridge lanes certainly could be described as childish. Petulant, even.

barehl, Cain usually posts pure deadpan parodies of the position he appears to be representing...

Yes, he's pretty good at it. I wonder if a clue might be available though. Maybe something like:

Devil's Advocate: "An investigation IS unnecessary. If they don't find anything, then it's a big waste of money. If they do find something, then it could tarnish the Republican brand, thus destroying America. "

or perhaps:

An investigation IS unnecessary. If they don't find anything, then it's a big waste of money. If they do find something, then it could tarnish the Republican brand, thus destroying America.

:troll

That one makes me laugh; I might have to start using it.

No, criminal would be more accurate.

Well, yes. That too. However, these things are not mutually exclusive, you know. It is possible to be criminal and childish. It is hard to think of a better example than the lane closings. Aside from being a "Nyah, nyah, nyah!" gesture what other reason was there to do it?

That's what initially made me question Christie's involvement. Sure, he's a bully, but I didn't figure him to be a stupid bully.

I made the same miscalculation when voting for a Republican president once. I knew he was an unscrupulous crook, but I didn't expect him to be a stupid unscrupulous crook.

I'm pretty sure it was criminal. I'll wait to find out the motive before I decide if it's childish too. For instance, if it was to disrupt the financing for that development project..

This article from Slate seems to argue that, now that the press and others are actively investigating Christie and his administration, there are a number of other potential scandals which will come to light.

And this article indicates that NJ Republicans are starting to get really worried, though they are trying to put up a brave public face.

The latest poll says that 53% believe that Christie knew what was going on.

It now turns out that Belleville which received no hurricane damage but whose mayor supported Christie got $6 million. If there were a doomsday clock for Christie, it would be past 10pm.

And if he didn't know what was going on, he should have. Beyond that, a leader fosters a culture amongst his underlings. Christie may have not known, but his aides thought that was worth doing. I have a hard time believing that they did it without first being taught that this is the kind of tactics that Christie likes and encourages.

I'm less concerned now about what he knew when about the lane closing than I am that he seems to fail to recognize that the people who didn't vote for him are also his constituents. That is not something we look for in our presidents.

If it turns out that he actually did know about the lane closing scheme, contrary to his earlier testimony, he will have to resign.
